Guide To Diy Pool Maintenance

DIY pool maintenance includes six simple tasks you need to perform on a regular schedule to keep your pool clean, healthy for swimmers, and functioning. Stay on top of these chores, and you wont ever have to worry about hiring a pool cleaning service.;

1. Balance water pH and chlorine levels. Once or twice a week, use test strips to check your pool waters pH and chlorine level. Add the appropriate pool chemicals as necessary to keep the pH level between 7.4 and 7.6 and the chlorine at 1.0 to 3.0 ppm.;

3. Clean the pools walls and floor. Using a handheld or automatic pool vacuum, remove dirt and debris from along the pools floor. Scrub caked-on dirt from the walls with a pool brush. Vacuuming and brushing once a week during swimming season should keep your pool ready to use at any time.;

4. Shock the pool. Also once a week, youll need to add a chlorine shock product to your pool water to keep it clean and safe for swimming. You may need to shock the pool more frequently after a storm.;

5. Prevent algae. Add a small dose of algaecide to your pool every week to keep algae from growing in the first place. That way you wont suffer from green pool and have to remove algae later.;

    Lets be honest, unless you are a professional gardener yourself, its highly likely you dont have the expert knowledge needed to care for a lawn properly.

    When it comes to DIY lawn care vs. professional there is usually no comparison. For a lawn care professional, it is their job to know how to care for your lawn. How Can I Find Out If A Landscaper Or Lawn Care Professional Is Considered An Essential Covid

    To consult national guidelines on essential COVID-19 service providers and see whether a lawn care professional qualifies, visit a page on CISAs website called Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This website contains 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors that you can search through. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISAs definitions of critical infrastructure so you should also check your city or states government website.;;

    Rates Vary A Little By Location

    Much of this depends on what part of the country you live in.;

    For example, pricing for lawn maintenance services in warmer climates such as Florida or California are more competitive than they are as compares to cooler climates.

    You might be wondering why this is?;

    Well, think about it. The lawn care business is more stable in climates where the grass needs cutting year-round. Naturally, in an area where grass grows for shorter seasons, lawn care services have to figure out how to make ends meet, during the wintertime.

    Put another way, lawn mowing services are treated more as a commodity in warmer climates.

    And more as a luxury service in Northern climates.

    A Lawn Care Service Can Save Money

    What are the true costs to purchase and maintain equipment?;

    On averagea riding mower costs $1,500, a blower $150, and a weed eater, $100the total investment adds up, and on top of that.;

    These costs do not include regular maintenance, repairs, and/or gas. With the initial costs at $1750, mowing an average of 30 times per year will cost the homeowner $36 per cut. .;

    Here’s the deal, data gathered by a national GreenPal lawn vendor survey shows the average mowing price is roughly $45 per half acre.;

    So for homeowners to cut their own grass at $1080 per year, and a professional vendor to mow at $1350 per year. Homeowners who mow the lawn themselves save only $270 per year.;

    This is crazy but, it would ultimately take a homeowner almost 7 years to recoup their initial investment of $1750. In light of these estimates and those in the previous paragraph, are you really saving any money?

    Getting Your Lawn Overseeded

    Lawn Care Advertising Ideas

    Overseeding your lawn via a professional usually cost around $1,200, which you saw in my lawn care pricing chart.

    Overseeding can boost the health and appearance of your lawn by encouraging the grass to continue growing even when older and problematic patches die.

    When you hire a company to overseed your lawn, you can specify that a disease-resistant or drought-resistant grass seed be used. This will be helpful for you if you live in a harsh climate.

    I have an article with detailed recommendations about the best seed to use for overseeding if youd like to learn more.

    Dont Forget To Price Special Services And Materials Differently

    Special services like mowing, mulching, and weed control and fertilization application should be priced accordingly, rather than lumped into one cost.

    Jason explains that these are actually very different services because they require different types of labor.

    Weed control and fertilization, for example, is typically a one-person operation, so your labor is cut downand that one person can actually generate a lot more revenue than one person can mowing, he explains.

    But there are expenses in the weed control: the actual fertilizer, weed control product, labor, and drive timeall those things are factors.

    The main thing Im concerned with is how big the actual yard is, and the actual amount of turf that Im going to be applying the fertilizer or herbicide to. The bigger the yard, the more of the product Im using. Thats my biggest expense, Jason explains.

    So, Im pricing strictly based on the square footage. I need to get an accurate measurement of the square footage of the lawn so that I know how to price it. Then I use a pricing chart that shows square footage from 2,000 square feet all the way up to 30,000 square feet.

    I can then look at my pricing chart and give them a price quickly. So as the square footage goes up, the price per square foot actually goes down.

    How You Can Keep Your Lawn Healthy Year

    You may want to pay to keep your lawn healthy year-round, not just in the warmer months. Many professionals offer a spring and fall package. In the spring, your lawn is aerated and fertilized so that it grows back fast after winter. In the fall, special fertilizers are used to protect it through the winter months and help it recover quicker in the spring. Some professionals suggest continuing to mow your grass until it naturally stops growing, which could mean December in some climates.

    Does A Landscaper Or Lawn Care Professional Need To Enter My Home

    Because landscaping and lawn maintenance take place outdoors, it is unlikely that these professionals will need to enter your home.

    To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, practice social distancing at all times — even with professionals doing work outside. You can minimize exposure during a consultation by using a video chat service. And when you pay, you can use a digital payment service like PayPal. Discuss strategies with any lawn mowing, landscaping, tree trimming and lawn care companies you may be considering.
