Finding Your Property Lines

Before you can accurately measure your yard, you need to know where the boundaries are.

If your home is brand-spanking new, this is likely simple because you should still have all the documents that show where your lawn ends, and your neighbors starts. Itll also cover any spots that you may think are yours but are actually easements that the local government or HOA is responsible for.

You pay taxes and dues, so no need to give them free lawn care, right?

If you live in an older house, this can be trickier because neighborly disputes or previous deals between neighbors can blur these lines. Luckily, your local government should have documents that show where your official property lines are.

With these documents in hand, you are ready to break out your favorite measuring device and get cracking.

Rectangular Plots Or Land

(I keep all these quilter

These types of land are often found in all areas. The sides of land whose one side is equal to their opposite side and another side is equal to another side are known as rectangular land.

Its all sides are perpendicular to each other i.e 90 degrees with each other. Lets understand with the help of numerical and figure given below.

Q) Calculate the area of rectangular land having dimensions given in the figure below.

Solution, Here in the figure two sides are 14 meter and two side are 8 meter.

so, let Length = 14 meter and Breadth = 8 meter

We have,

So, Using above formula we get,

Area = L X B = = 112 m2

Hence, in this way we can calculate area of land which are in rectangular shape. now let us calculate area of square plots or land.

How To Measure Your Curved Lawn

Luckily, an irregularly shaped lawn is about as complicated as measuring your lawn gets. Although it would seem that measuring a curved lawn would be just as, if not more difficult, its actually pretty easy. To measure your lawn, measure it at its longest and widest points like you would measure a rectangular lawn. Although this will give you a m2 area might have leftover seed, more is more in this case!

Now you know how to measure your lawn, you can easily calculate how much grass seed youll need for sowing or overseeding.

The Area Output Of The Robotic Lawnmower

Manufacturers initially specify the maximum area output for robotic mowers. This value indicates how much area the device can mow in a certain time under absolutely optimal conditions. In practice, however, these conditions are rarely achieved as factors such as complex garden layouts, slopes, weather conditions or even the type of lawn influence ;mowing times.

Accordingly, there is a second value with the recommended area output, which is significantly below the maximum performance but in many cases corresponds to reality. If you want to determine which area output the robotic lawnmower needs to mow your lawn in a desired mowing time, proceed as follows:

  • Determine the weekly operating time of your robot in hours. For example, if this is 6 a day, but Sunday is excluded, you will arrive at 36 hours a week.
  • Determine how many hours the robotic lawnmower should be in use according to the manufacturer in order to achieve the specified mowing output.
  • Calculate the lawn area of your yard.
  • Put the numbers into the following formula:

Lawn area in m² / planned mowing time in hours x assumed mowing time of the manufacturer = required area output .

In the above example, this would make the calculation as follows:

1,250 m² / 36 hrs. x 120 hrs. = 4,166.67 m²

For an area of 1,250 m², you would therefore need a robotic lawnmower with an area output of around 4,200 m² if the robotic lawnmower is only to be used 6 hours a day.

Measuring Lawn Square Footage

When taking measurements for new lawn areas it is not always easy. Use the following steps:

  • Break the lawn area into squares.
  • Measure the length and the width of each square. You dont need a measuring tape you can pace it off. Each pace is about 3 feet for the average person.
  • Add in the parts that were shaved off by squaring.
  • Add up each section to get your total square footage or use our turf / sod calculator.
  • If you have circles or rounded areas you will need the radius of the circle and then use the calculator here.

There are separate calculators for different types of plant materials and common landscape settings:

    • Lawn and Turfgrass provides irrigation runtimes and is tailored to California locations.
    • Groupings and Mass Plantings of Trees or Shrubs – situations where plants are spaced closely enough that the canopies of trees, shrubs, or a mix of them cover at least 80% of the ground.
    • Individual Trees and Shrubs – situations where plants are widely-spaced and the canopies of trees, shrubs or a mix of them cover less than 80% of the ground.
    • Non-turf Perennial Groundcovers – situations where a mass planting covers at least 80% of the ground, or where perennial non-turf groundcover is mixed with trees and/or shrubs in a mass planting or bed and the combined plant canopy covers at least 80% of the ground.
    • Mass Plantings or Beds of Herbaceous Perennial Flowers and Similar Plants – situations where at least 80% of the ground is covered by plant canopy.
    • Mass Plantings or Beds of Annual Flowers and Bedding Plants situations where plant canopy covers at least 80% of the ground, or where annual flowers are planted among trees or shrubs in beds and the combined plant canopy covers at least 80% of the ground.

When trees are located in a planting of lawn, groundcover,;herbaceous perennials, or annual flowers, their water requirements will be met by the estimated water requirement of the surrounding planting.

How To Determine The Size Of The Lawn Area For The Robotic Lawnmower

Manufacturers of robotic mowers specify the area output for individual models. This tells you what area your device can mow in a certain time under ideal conditions. Perfect cutting results can only be achieved if the specified performance matches your garden. How do you find out how large the area of your own garden actually is?

The size of your own garden is important for selecting a suitable robotic lawnmower model. However, the calculation is not always very simple. The first variant works classically by calculating individual areas:

Important Terms When Determining The Area Performance

How to measure lawn square footage

In addition to the area output, there are other key figures that are important for the overall performance of the robotic lawnmower:

    • maximum operating hours per day. This figure tells the maximum time the robotic lawnmower can spend on the lawn per day minus charging times.
    • mowing capacity as area output per hour
    • mowing cycle: During this time, the device mows the entire lawn once.
    • cutting width: The larger the cutting width, the larger the area the robot can mow with each pass, i.e. the more efficient the device is.
    • battery run time: the larger the battery, the longer the mowing time. This also shortens the total time it takes to mow the entire area once.
    • mowing speed: the speed of the robotic lawnmower in km/h.

Calculating the lawn area is an indispensable requirement when purchasing a suitable robotic lawnmower. An even cut is ensured only if the model is powerful enough to mow your lawn in the desired time.

Why You Should Measure Your Lawn

Whenever you buy a bag of product for your lawn, you will see that it states approximately how much square footage of ground it will be able to cover.

Thats great, but only if you know what size your lawn actually is otherwise youre guessing.

Its important that you buy enough product to cover your lawn, but over-applying can burn your grass or alter your soils chemistry in a way that can permanently damage your lawn.

Measuring your lawn ahead of time allows you to buy right , and apply right .

    The Average Radius Method

Another way to determine the area of irregular circles is to measure the radius at 10 to 20 degree intervals and calculate the area from the average.

Step 1. Find the center or near center of the circular area.

Step 2. Record measurements, to the nearest foot, from the edge of the area to the center of the circle every 10 to 20 degrees.

    Step 3. Average the measurements

    Average radius = 17 ft

Step 4. Estimate the area using the formula for the area of a circle.

    Area = r2

Separate Different Services Into Different Estimates

For example, fertilizer estimates need to include extra costs for products that can vary for each job, whereas mowing does not.

    As Jason Creel explains,

The main thing Im concerned with when doing a fertilizing job is how big the actual yard is, and the actual amount of turf that Im going to be applying the fertilizer or herbicide to.

The bigger the yard, the more of the product Im using.

I need to get an accurate measurement of the square footage of the lawn so that I know how to price it.

Then I use a pricing chart that shows square footage from 2,000 square feet all the way up to 30,000 square feet. I can look at my pricing chart and estimate a price quickly.

    Calculate Your Hourly Labor Rate

How much are you going to charge per person, per hour for the average job? This number should be based on things like the going rate in your area, how much money you want to earn per hour, and how much youre paying your employees.

If youre just starting off, look at the work and estimate the time it will take you to complete the job. Then consider how much you want to make per hour.

Pricing by the hour makes sense because lot size isnt always an accurate pricing metric. For example, garden homes might take you half an hour to complete, even if they are the same size as a quarter-acre lot, which could take you 45 minutes to complete.

Jason Creel explains that your hourly rate is important, but you shouldnt communicate it to your clients.

    He explains:

Lets just say that your hourly rate is $60 per hour. Now, youre not going to speak to the customer and say, hey, I charge $60 an hour, so Im going to time myself when I cut your grass, and then multiply that by 60. Youll quickly learn how to estimate and then multiply that in your mind.

Pro tip: if youre just starting out and not sure about how long a lawn will take, keep track of the time it takes you to complete the job using time tracking software or a stopwatch. From there, find the average of your labor hours over time before figuring out exactly what speed you work at.
