How To Kill Fungus Gnats

How to Get Rid of Gnats | DIY Pest Control | The Home Depot

Fungus gnats are slow, erratic flyers, so killing them is not hard. Here are some of the most effective ways to get rid of adults:

1. Sticky TrapsFlypaper or more modern decorative sticky traps are popular options to catch any fungus gnats buzzing around houseplants and windows. Small yellow sticky traps can be cut and placed on wooden stakes and inserted into pots close to the soil, where adults tend to crawl and fly.

2. Apple Cider VinegarFill a shallow container with 1/4 inch of apple cider vinegar and a few drops of dish soap, and cover with plastic wrap. Poke a few holes in the top of the plastic wrap, making them large enough to allow fungus gnats to crawl through. The gnats are attracted to the vinegar, and soap breaks the surface tension of the water, which causes flies to fall into the solution and drown.

3. Flying Insect SprayIf you dont want to wait for a trap to kill the fungus gnats, take them out quickly with a spray formulated with essential oils, like Ortho® Home Defense® Flying Bug Killer with Essential Oils. It kills quickly and is safe to use around kids and pets when used as directed.

4. Fly BaitKill fungus gnats with Ortho® Home Defense® Fly Bait Decal For Windows. Fungus gnats and other flying insects are attracted to the bait, eat a tiny dose, and then die minutes later.

Why Use A Fogger For Gnats ^

For those of you who dont know, Foggers or Mist Blowers are small devices that pump out a mist which is a great form of treating any landscape. Its highly effective because the mist these machines create will cover plants, turf and hard to reach areas way better compared to liquid applications.

There are many foggers and mist blowers to choose from and we have a large range that can be used effectively for small lots of 5,000 sq/ft or less right up to big lots that can total several acres. Just be sure to get a machine that will handle your property efficiently so it wont be stressed or cause you to work too hard. These two conditions will in turn lead to poor product performance and/or a tendency to not treat enough because the work is too hard. Tips On Spraying For Gnats:

Swarming Gnats in My Yard

Use a Hudson-Style pump up sprayer available at Home Depot, Lowes or almost all hardware and garden stores. Mix Mosquito Barrier, water and some soap – liquid Dawn is fine, in the proportions listed below and put the mixture into the sprayer.

For each one gallon of water add: 12 ounces of Mosquito Barrier 2 tablespoons of liquid soap Mix well.

Gnats that are outdoors generally can be seen large numbers hovering over certain areas of the lawn. The grass beneath those clouds of gnats is where they were hatched out and that’s the area you need to spray. Holding the sprayer’s wand about 10-12 inches above the grass – spray deeply into the grass with a forceful spray. That area is usually about a 10 foot square grassy patch that needs spraying – you need not spray the whole lawn.

NOTICE: Do not spray on wet lawns. Once a lawn has been sprayed, do not water the lawn for 48 hours.

Do not re-spray the lawn until you notice that some gnats have reappeared. This treatment typically is effective for 2-4 weeks and often longer if excessive lawn watering is reduced.

A Note About Indoor Fungus Gnats

Most indoor gnats are due to house plants. Gnats are hatched out in the potting mixture atthe base of the plants. Watering your indoor plants with garlic water will help eliminate indoor fungus gnats.

For fungus gnats that are hatched out in sinks or garbage cans – use a commercial insecticideand thoroughly flush and clean all drains.

No Biological Method For Getting Rid Of Fungus Gnats

The methods discussed so far were 100% biological. Hence, substances found in nature and not produced almost from scratch. However, if you are not very into bioproducts, there are a few man-designed pesticides that can be quite effective in getting rid of fungus gnats.

Mosquito Bits

This product is a kind of biological control specially designed for indoor use. It comes in the form of small bits coated with the bacteria Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies israelensis. We discussed these bacteria before. It does produce toxins that kill larvae in the soil.

The best way is to drop around 2 tablespoons in a container with half a gallon of water. Stir it if and leave it there to soak for 20 minutes. The solution so obtained can be applied to water the plants whose soil is infested with fungus gnats larvae. After several waterings, the gnats were gone. This solution is not harmful to pets, humans, just to the larvae.

Generic Insecticide

One note of caution here. Using insecticides to deal with insect infestations is not always the best policy. Remember, insecticides are indiscriminate and will kill insects you do want and those you dont.

For example, if you grow tomatoes or other fruits or flowering plants indoors, pollinators may be required. Even if you take pollination into your own hands, letting in a few predatory insects can make it far easier to deal with aphids and other common pests organically. Often, it is best to simply live and let live.

How To Repel Gnats

When dealing with a gnat infestation in your yard, your first thought might be to turn to harsh chemicals to deal with the problem. While an insect fogger or chemical insect repellent will be useful in killing gnats, it is also extremely toxic to your family and the environment.

Aside from wearing long pants during the hot summer months, here are several gnat repellent solutions that use everyday items to repel gnats.

A vinegar trap is an extremely effective way to deal with gnats in your yard. To make this effective gnat trap, add some apple cider vinegar and liquid dish soap to a small container or bowl. Place the pots around the potted plants on your porch and in other areas infested with gnats.

The sweet scent of the vinegar attracts the gnats to the bowl, and when they dip down to taste the sweet liquid, their legs and wings will become covered in dish soap. The dish soap effectively keeps them from escaping the trap, and they will eventually drown in the solution.
