How Can I Drain Water From A Low Spot In My Garden When I Have No Lower Spot To Drain To

I have a low spot in the back of my yard that pools excessive water after a rain. The only lower spot than that is my neighbor’s yard so I cannot drain there. The back of my yard faces a sidewalk which is actually higher than the low spot by nearly 6 inches. The problem is the yards in this development were not properly graded. How do I drain this water? I don’t think the classic French drain answer will work as all areas of the yard slope to this one spot, and I can’t drain against the grade.

All you need is a spade and a large plastic bucket like you buy drywall or paint in.

This is a variation on a french drain and will not provide relief against the “one in a hundred year storm” but should work for most normal rainfalls.

If you have depressions, troughs, or holes that are deeper than 1 or 2 inches, you’re usually better off filling them with a good soil mix and starting over with new grass seed. Bringing up deeply sunken areas with topdressing takes too many applications, and you’ll spend more time trying to keep the grass alive than you will getting new grass to grow.

The trick to filling deep holes is to compact the soil gently and give it some water to settle it as you fill up the hole. If you simply pile on some loose dirt and plant your seed, the soil will settle, and you’ll be left with sunken area covered with nice, new grass. Walking on the soil is enough to compact it. Don’t compact the top-most soil where you will sow the grass seed. Prepare the soil and seed the area following the seed product instructions.

Remove 10 x 10 squares of your grass around the low spot using a shovel. Do NOT dispose of the grass squares. That would be like throwing away your toupee!

Tip: If you are cutting a large section of turf, lay out a tarp and place the cut pieces of turf upside down in the same arrangement that you cut them from your yard. This will save time when you put your turf back together.

Either way, you’ve got two options on how to fix the dip and replace the grass. The one I prefer is first stripping off the grass in the section to be repaired. Get underneath it with a shovel and loosen up strips that are about 2 to 4 inches thick. If you have to remove strips that are more than a foot wide, you might want to cut it down the middle. Strips this size are easy to roll up – kind of like a piece of carpet.

The other option is the one you describe. You could just spread topsoil over the dip – grass and all. But that amount of soil will smother the underlying grass, meaning you’ll have to add new grass seed on top. The old grass will decompose underneath , but it’ll take a few weeks for the new grass to come up and start to fill in.
