Firstly, lets take a look at a patch of lawn that has been burnt by fertilizer:
As you can see, this part of the lawn has been scorched. This fertilizer burn is caused by a build-up of nitrogen and soluble salts, which can cause the grass to dry out.
This usually happens when too much fertilizer is carelessly applied to one spot. As a result, we end up with ugly-looking brown patches of dead and burnt-out grass.

1. Prepare the Soil: Begin by removing thatch from the area of dead grass using a garden rake or hand rake. Once you get below the layer of thatch, rake the soil to loosen it for the seeds.
2. Spread the Seed Mixture: Following manufacturers instructions on the product, spread the product over the area, being careful not to overseed. The seeds will germinate best when daytime temperatures are between 60 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit .
3. Gently Water: With a garden hose and spray nozzle set to the gentlest setting, water deeply and thoroughly to give the seed the best possible start. Keep moist for up to two weeks when germination occurs. Keep pets and people away from the seeded areas until the grass is restored.

Understanding What Cause Grass Burn
Relying solely on the appearance of your lawn to determine what is causing the issue can be deceiving.
Understanding is the first successful step to fix the issue. First, warm-season grass naturally goes dormant during the winter months. So if you live in a warm climate and your lawn turns brown every winter season, you should not worry it will turn green again by late spring or early summer.
Heat and lack of water will initially drive a lawn into a dormancy.
In addition, sometimes, cool-season grasses may turn brown and look dead in summer because of heat and drought.
Whether you live in a rural or highly urban area, your local county extension office is an excellent resource for spot-on lawn advice.
According to the University of Illinois, the minimum amount of water needed to keep the grassroots alive is about 1/3-inch water once in 3 weeks.
In other words, your grass can survive through periods of drought on a surprisingly small quantity of water as long as the water arrives at the root zone. Yes, your lawn will turn brown, but it will keep the roots alive.
Replacing Grass With Fertilizer Burn
If you determine your burned turf is beyond repair or isnt responding to your attempts to repair it through watering, youll have to replace it to make your lawn lush again.
Though the process is similar to ripping up any grass and replacing it with new sod, there are a few extra steps to take along the way.
Step 1: Remove the Old Grass
If the affected area is small enough, remove the dead grass by raking it out with a hard rake. If the burned area is too large for manual removal, use a sod cutter to cut up the dead grass, then roll it up like a rug and remove it.
Step 2: Prepare the Soil
Prepare the soil for the new grass by tilling or aerating it to loosen any compacted soil. Once loosened, test the soils nutrient and pH levels with a home soil test from a lawn and garden store. Amend the soil if its short on nutrients or the pH levels arent acceptable.
Level the soil with the backside of a hard rake.
Step 3: Lay the Sod or Reseed
When replacing the grass, you can either lay new sod for an immediate repair or reseed it to reduce cost.
If youre laying sod, simply place the sod on the leveled soil. When you get to the perimeter, use a sod knife to trim the sod pieces to fit. Walk over the newly sodded area and use your feet to stomp down any uneven areas.
Step 4: Water and Wait
When mowing your lawn, avoid the area you laid seeds or sod until the new grass is 3 inches tall or the sod no longer lifts when you pull up on it.

Water And Keep Watering
No matter how extensive the damage, or what the cause is, you need to water, and then water some more. Water helps flush nitrogens and other minerals into the soils and allows them to more quickly dissipate into a less concentrated solution.
Youll want to put down about an inch of water a day for at least a week to make sure that youve truly gotten the worst of it taken care of. This is especially true if your damage is caused by an accidental over fertilization. Hopefully if you have caught the burn early enough this will take care of the worst of the damage and you will begin to see some new growth occurring by the end of the week or soon after.

Use sprinklers to more evenly water the areas in question, also applying water to areas not affected to help keep the culprit leaching through the soils more evenly throughout the yard
Should You Water Grass Every Day When It’s Hot
Between irrigation and natural rainfall, your grass should receive between 1 and 1.5 inches of water each week during the summer. Water deeply every other day for the best results. Your turf should receive about 1/3 an inch of water every two days in order to maintain deeper roots, thus helping protect against drought.

Reduce The Stress On The Lawn
If the lawn is short of nutrients, light fertilizer application can help it to grow healthy. However, if the fertilizer application is too much, you will be putting too much stress on the lawn, which in turn will affect weak grass and will cause it to burn. Apart from fertilizer application, you also need to note the condition of the lawn. It might already be suffering from stress due to heat, disease, drought, or something else. In such a case, do not add any fertilizer as it will only result in more damages.
How To Repair Burned Grass From Fertilizer
Burned lawns will need a generous amount of water to get back to green. Its important to water your lawn as soon as you spot any brown or yellow patches to prevent further damage. Slowly soak the affected areas every day for about a week to fully flush out the salt. And, keep in mind the best time to water is in the morning!
Check back in on your lawn in a few weeks. The affected areas should be turning green. If not, those areas of your lawn may need to be dug up and over seeded.

5 Steps to Full Repair
Whether the fertilizer only burned a tiny patch of your grass or a large area, damaged lawns can usually be repaired however, the fix may take more than some simple TLC. The burned sections will have to be removed, discarded, and replaced with new seed.
Here are the steps that this solution usually requires:
- Score around smaller, burnt areas, and remove small patches of dead grass. For large sections or more damage, use a tiller to dig up and remove.
- Remove about an inch of soil from where the dead grass was removed. The fertilizer that burned your grass will still be in this soil because it reached the roots of your grass. Removing this soil will keep your new grass from being poisoned by too much of the same culprit.
- Add fresh topsoil to the areas from where you removed the dead grass and old soil. Rake the topsoil to keep your lawn at an even level.
