Finally you can fertilize the lawn . The Quick and Thick has some fertilizer in it but if you want to make sure your grass is super green and vibrant, you can add some more fertilizer using the drop spreader .
We bought Scotts Turf Builder Pro and it is recommended to fertilize in fall and again in early spring and late spring. In fall you can fertilize once and do it again 8 weeks later .
Without the fertilizer, the grass doesnt have nutrients, it starts to die off, and the opportunistic weeds start to take over.
Some people consider adding corn gluten as a post-emergent fertilizer. It also prevents weeds from growing.

You can do one final mow before the winter about 6 week after you overseed.
Plant Seed Or Lay Sod
You already checked your soils fertility in Step 1. If your soil needed nutrients, you took care of that with the compost in Step 4.
Now its time to bring new life to your lawn.
If using grass seed, spread it evenly over the prepared area. Check to ensure good seed to soil contact and penetration. Once youve seeded the area, spread a thin layer of soil over the top to help with germination.
If youre laying sod, make sure that each piece connects firmly with its adjacent pieces. Ensure that the root sections of each piece have solid contact with the soil.

So can a brown lawn be saved? Depending on your particular circumstances, generally, yes. That being said, you should try to pinpoint what is causing the browning in the first place.
Drought: This a big problem across much of the country these days, and drought is one of the primary reasons for dying grass. Many people opt not to water their lawns during the summer, but this may be a mistake when there isnt enough rain to keep the roots alive. Grass naturally goes dormant after two to three weeks without water, and most lawns can tolerate drought for four to six weeks, although they will turn brown. Will Grass Killed By Roundup Come Back
Grass killed by Roundup will not grow back from the root. Roundup is a very effective chemical herbicide that kills all varieties of plants completely. If a grass plant is brown 14 days after Roundup has been sprayed on it, then it will not come back.

- Roundup does not kill seeds. Weed and grass seedlings may sprout up in areas that were previously sprayed with Roundup.

What Is The Easiest Way To Remove Dead Grass Killed By Roundup
After you kill them with Roundup, you can remove grass and dead weeds from an entire lawn with a sod cutter, by mowing low and dethatching the lawn, or by rototilling dead grass into the top 6 inches of soil. To remove dead grass in localized areas, use a string trimmer to cut it off or soil height. Alternatively, you can dig up dead grass and root material with a shovel. After youve sprayed grass, weeds, or any other vegetation with Roundup, wait 14 days before you begin removal. This allows time for the Roundup to work through the plants system, killing it down to the root. If you begin cutting or removing the grass sooner than this, you may interrupt the herbicides process, which can cause pest grass to regrow.

How To Check For Grubs In Lawn
Before you start treating, it is important to check to make sure that indeed there are grubs damaging your lawn. Irregular brown patches of dying grass are the first sign. If you see the patches, lift the turf to check for the grub worms.

Dead grass on an existing lawn can be the result of a number of causes, and its removal should address only the specific problem because you don’t want to have to reseed the entire lawn.
Rake the lawn with a fan-shaped broom rake in the spring after the snow has melted and the ground is firm. Debris from this step can go onto the compost pile. Diagnose your dead-grass problem before going further. Winter kill from snow mold requires a much less extreme treatment than botrytis blight or excessive thatch.
Remove patches of winter-killed or dog-damaged grass with a rigid-tined garden rake. If only the dead grass pulls away, all you need to do is over-seed thin areas. If all of the grass pulls away like a toupee, get the soil tested for fungus or viruses before reseeding.

Thatch is a communion of dead grass, roots and other matter that builds up in grass over time. Its very common and collects on most lawns at some time or another. Thatch collects above the soil at surface level and becomes intertwined in grass stems. When the cycle of decomposition is delayed for any variety of reasons, dead matter will begin to build up. As the build up increases the dead matter becomes stacked and then packs down or matts and causes healthy grass blades to become stressed and weaken. It thins, and eventually dies.
Thatch can actually choke a lawn to death! As it thickens it robs the soil of air and hinders water absorption and nutrient penetration to the soil and root system. Not only will excessive thatch kill the grass, left undeterred long enough it will damage the soil so that even if removed, new growth in that area will be sparse at best. Thick thatch levels can also become a haven for insects. Moisture rich matted thatch can be an excellent breeding ground for mosquitos and disease.
Thatch creates a water barrier, prevents new grass from growing and harbors insects. It collects quickly and before long the lawn and its entire root system is at risk.
Lawn dethatching , when performed as needed, will go a long way in maintaining a healthy, green lawn! Dethatching allows new grass shoots to grow in thick and lush.

Manually Remove Grass With A Shovel
Ready to get digging? Using a shovel to cut and remove grass is a great choice for smaller spaces, or in tight areas with a lot of curves or obstacles. While slightly more laborious, this is also the least expensive option to remove grass. Even though our yards are fairly large, this is how we removed our grass. For example, our front yard had about 1000 square feet of grass. To make the task more manageable, we removed our grass in two phases. We tackled the back half with raised beds in fall of 2015, the front half closer to the house in fall of 2017.
Deep Mulch & Sheet Mulching
One very organic and sustainable way to kill grass is to cover it with a deep natural mulch material. For example, by mulching over the top of grass with leaves, wood chips, compost, leaf mold, bark, pine needles, and/or paper material. In order for mulch to successfully kill grass, it needs to be several inches deep enough to block out sunlight, provide decent weight, and effectively smother the grass. Fluffy material like leaves will compact and break down with time, so start out with even more on top a couple feet even.
One of the best ways to kill grass with deep mulch is to apply a thick layer of paper material over the grass first with mulch on top. For instance, use newspaper , unwaxed cardboard, or a couple layers of bulk unbleached masking paper. You know, the stuff you can buy in a huge roll?
After you lay paper material over the grass, wet it thoroughly. Then add mulch of choice on top and wet that material too. Paper or no paper, spray down the deep mulch material every so often . Damp conditions accelerate decomposition, and will also help prevent fluffy mulch material like leaves from blowing away in windy conditions.
