Use a post-emergent herbicide labeled for crabgrass. If you already have a crabgrass infestation, then a chemical treatment may be necessary to tackle the problem. All lawn weed herbicides are not made the same. Some will kill your regular grass and other common weeds. Make sure you read the label. Herbicides made to target crabgrass will be in a liquid form. It is meant for spot treatment and not for a broadcast application. Follow the directions on the label of the product for proper safety protocol.

Soil Temps Are Crucial

Crabgrass starts to germinate when your soil temperature hits 55 degrees. The best thing you can do is find out when your soil temperature usually hits 50 degrees and apply your crabgrass pre-emergent then. If you apply when soil temps are at 50, by the time it hits 55 the pre-emergent will already be in your soil.

Once soil temps go above 80 degrees crabgrass germination comes to a halt. Adding a pre-emergent at this time wont be very effective. I should point out that at the end of summer as soil temps fall back down to 70 degrees there are fall germinating broadleaf weeds that can pop up. Thats why I recommend a third application of pre-emergents heading into fall.

It is a summer broadleaf weed called Chamberbitter. In fact, one of its nicknames is Little Mimosa weed. It is a broadleaf weed that is thought to have been introduced from Florida from pine straw about 15 years ago. It is a prolific seeder and has done well moving around the Triangle from straw and other means. It typically germinates in mid to late summer and usually appears around pine straw and birdfeeders first. It will grow straight up like a tree until mowed. Chamber Bitter spreads by seed. Seed pods are under and along the leaf branches and contain hundreds of seeds per plant.

It is a difficult broadleaf weed to control with the available broadleaf weed control products. We identify our customers that have this broadleaf weed and try to make multiple weed control applications to gain some control on spreading.

Spot Treat To Kill Crabgrass

While prevention is definitely the best method for managing crabgrass, it is likely you will still have some clumps of crabgrass that find a way into your turf. It is usually in the most vulnerable locations within your lawn.
