Possible color combinations for green without blue:

Cadmium Yellow Light + Burnt Umber

Cadmium Yellow Light + Paynes Grey

Start with the yellow and add very small amounts of the brown or grey to it since the yellow can very easily become overwhelmed with the darker colors.

What Is Grass Paint

How Lawn Spray Paint Keeps Your Grass Green

We know what youre imagining. A homeowner crawling around on their hands and knees with a can of Rustoleum spray painting each blade of grass a lush green. While the concept of grass paint is similar, its far more professional than that.

Grass paint is a non-toxic pigment that gives your browning or yellowing grass a boost of color while you wait for its natural green to return. Well get into the nitty-gritty of whats in grass paint a bit later, but its not what youll find in a rattle can on the shelf at your local hardware store.

What Type Of Paint Do You Use On Synthetic Turf

You can use the same process for painting the fake grass if you have one in your backyard garden, balcony, or porch.

Its just the paint you will need for artificial turf will be different.

For an artificial synthetic grass, its best to use specialized acrylic paint.

If you want you can use removable chalk paint which is also a good alternative for turf painting.

These are water-based paints that are most suitable for synthetic turf surfaces, car parks, tennis courts, and others.

Few other benefits offered by these synthetic grass paints are:

  • Can be easily applied through spray markers
  • Neither permanent nor can easily be removed
  • Extremely vivid and durable lasts for several months

Available in more than one color you can also use these turf paints and dyes for painting mark lines on your artificial grass.

Remember that you should not use any regular spray paint on grass as it can contain harmful ingredients that can kill your green grass.

How Lawn Painting Restores Your Lawns Looks

Lawn paint, also called grass paint or turf colorant, is a spray-on product used to cover brown spots or enhance the color of a faded lawn. Most often made from kaolin clay or plant-based pigments, its generally considered safe for people and the environment. The color looks natural, so no one can tell the lawn has been painted.

Lawn painting has been around for decades, but its usually been reserved for businesses that depend on the appearance of their grass, such as golf courses and hotel resorts. With ongoing droughts and water restrictions in many parts of the country, though, lawn painting is becoming increasingly popular among homeowners.

Some use the paint to cover brown spots in their drought-stricken lawns, while others use it to hide areas where their pets often urinate. Still, others paint their lawns to keep them green while theyre dormant in winter. Its also helpful for improving curb appeal when youre trying to sell a house, although youll want to let your potential buyers know you used paint.

How To Make Your Lawn Green With Paint

There are several products on the market that allow you to paint your lawn green using non-hazardous chemicals. They are not hazardous to plants, humans or animals. It will even be okay if your pet eats the grass that has been treated. In addition, if you walk on the grass or if the grass gets wet you dont have to worry about tracking the paint on your shoes into your home. These paint products typically dry in less than an hour, are easy to apply and for the average homeowner something they can do at about the same expense as a fertilizer application.

  • Be sure to use a product that has a naturally occurring pigmented dye, is 100% safe for the environment and 100% biodegradable. Stay away from latex paint.
  • Mow the lawn before application and make sure it is free of weeds.
  • You can apply most paints with a garden sprayer. Use a circular pattern and be sure to mask off any areas adjacent to your lawn you dont want to paint. Achieving a uniform color is the key here.
  • Even though the product is non-toxic it is a good idea to wear protective clothing such as latex style gloves, safety goggles and a cloth breathing mask. Also, be sure to read and follow all label directions.

Californians Find Novel Ways To Cope With Drought

JACK MELLIGAN, a prison guard in Sacramento, was tired of staring at his brown, patchy lawna side-effect of the drought that has parched California for the past three years. He thought about replacing it with shop-bought turf, but worried that he might incur hefty fines for watering it, under new statewide water restrictions. So he paid someone $180 to spray-paint his lawn a cheery green instead.

In a state known for special effects, such fakery is to be expected. If Hollywood can make a green screen look like a terrifying desert on an alien planet, it is only natural that Californians should seek ways to make the terrifying deserts in their front yards look verdant. Mr Melligan is not alone your correspondent has a wardrobe full of green-stained shoes to prove it.

The fad for trompe loeil gardening has been a boon for lawn-painters such as David Bartlett, the owner of Xtreme Green Grass, whose business has grown 75% this year. Over the same period Jim Power, who runs a lawn-paint supply company called LawnLift, has seen sales triple. It has become more socially acceptable to paint your lawn, he says, especially as its become more socially shameful to water it. At the same time, fewer Californians are buying new turf, says Jurgen Gramckow, who grows the stuff and says sales at his farm in Oxnard are down 20% this year.

How Can You Remove The Paint From Grass

Its not much of a problem if you accidentally spill some paint on real natural grass while painting a lawn, as you can cut it down after it has grown out.

But if its an artificial turf you have overspray on that does not match with your synthetic turf color, its essential to remove it to avoid the dull stains and awkward patches.

Depending on the type of paint you have used, you can either use soapy hot water or some chemical-based paint removers for cleaning up the artificial grass.

If the paint on the grass is already dry, you can also try removing it by using a paint scraper that can be easily purchased at your nearby home improvement store.

Make sure you do not apply too much pressure on the blades of artificial grass as it can make them break off from the lawn.

The Bottom Line

Painted lawn grass and artificial turf look awesome as it gives your place an evergreen fresher feel with deep green color.

Although you can hire a professional to do it, you can do the job yourself fairly easily if you have the right tools and patience.

This is not only fun but can save good amount of money as well.

How Long Does Grass Paint Last

This grass paint promises to last up to three months, depending on how fast your grass is growing and how brutal your weather is.

My lawn has only been painted for a couple weeks so I cant testify to how long it lasts. But weve already had both rain and blazing hot sun, and the color is still holding up beautifully.

Maintaining Your Painted Lawn

How to Paint your grass for a Deep Greener Look (Oddly Satisfying Lawn Care)

How long your grass holds its new color depends on several factors. A lawn painting job can fade after a month or stay looking fresh for half a year, but most last for two or three months.

The biggest factor is the condition of your lawn. If its completely dead, the paint will last longer because the grass isnt growing, and youre not mowing or watering it. If the grass is dormant, the paint will appear to fade when the grass starts to grow again, much like dyed hair starts to show roots as it grows. Thats usually not a problem because the new grass is a healthy, natural green. Frequent rain and mowing, and heavy foot traffic can also wear away your lawn paint.

If the brown spots in your lawn are getting you down, lawn painting is an easy, low-cost way to restore your lawn to a rich, even, and healthy color. While youll still need to water regularly to keep your grass alive, you can cut back somewhat and still have a lawn that makes you proud.

Lawn Painting Options: Hire A Pro Or Diy

If you live in a drought-prone area, chances are your local landscapers are experienced with lawn painting. Prices vary by region, but generally run between 15 to 20 cents per square foot.

If youd prefer to save some money, though, the job is simple enough to do yourself. Youll need a garden sprayer, and you can pick up a bottle of concentrated lawn paint for around $25 to $30 that will cover up to 500 square feet of lawn. From there, just follow the product instructions. Most use the same basic application process:

Prepare your lawn Wait for a sunny, dry, windless day when no rain is in the forecast for the next day or two. Mow your lawn and let it dry. Use tarps, painters drop cloths or similar material to cover plants and landscaping features bordering the lawn to protect them from the lawn paint. That includes shrubs, groundcover plants, fences, and sidewalks. This step is important because lawn paint can discolor other plants and wont easily wash off your sidewalks and other hardscaping.

Prepare the paint With most products, you can mix the paint with water right in your garden sprayer. Start with the paint-to-water ratio the product instructions recommend. Set your sprayer to a fine mist. Test the paint on an inconspicuous part of your grass to make sure its the color you want. If it isnt, add more paint or water as needed.

Final Tips On Mixing Greens

There are hundreds of combinations you can use to make green. You dont ever have to be stuck using a green you arent happy with.

Since colors can vary between manufacturers it is a good idea to experiment with the paints you have to see what hues of green you get.

A good idea would be to purchase an inexpensive watercolor book or a notebook with paper that can handle paint. Use it as a paint diary of sorts and do swatches of your paint mixes.

Remember to write down your paint combinations so you will know how to replicate them in the future.

If you are just starting out on your painting journey and wondering what paints to purchase for landscapes, a good rule of thumb is to buy 2 blues and 2 yellows:

A cool yellow Lemon Yellow or Cadmium Yellow Light

A warm yellow Cadmium Yellow Deep or Hansa Yellow Deep

A cool blue Prussian Blue or Phthalo Blue for example.

A warm blue Ultramarine Blue or Cerulean*

*There is a lot of debate over which blues are warm and which are cool. While researching this article I came across many artists who argued back and forth over whether Ultramarine in particular was warm or cool.

It is a hot topic apparently with many technical arguments about its placement on the color wheel. Its enough to make your head spin.

Ultimately, I decided since Ultramarine blue has a slight reddish/purple/violet bias it would fit the warm blue definition for the purposes of mixing greens.
