Californians Get Their Drought
David Bartlett, owner of Xtreme Green Grass in West Sacramento, Calif. paints lawns green, a service that’s shot up in popularity as the state’s drought lengthens.
Bartlett says he’s taking more orders now than ever before.
“I probably have about seven appointments scheduled in just the next week or so.” He said.
The procedure takes Bartlett and his team about an hour to complete. Bartlett arrives at a customer’s homes with his equipment, including a sprayer that shoots a dye across all of the drought-stricken areas of the yard. He said the dye is an all natural earth pigment and is not harmful to people or pets.
“It’s just like the regular old grass when they eat it.” Said Bartlett. “It won’t hurt them at all.”
As for the cost, Bartlett charges about 25 cents a square foot. So, if you have a 1,000 square foot yard for example, the grass painting will cost you around $250.
Record low snowpack in California’s mountains during this fourth year of drought prompted Calif. Gov. Jerry Brown to institute mandatory water cutbacks of 25%. Among the requirements: replacing lawns with drought-tolerant landscaping and banning the watering of ornamental grass in medians.
Some residents and businesses have already started to yank out their yellowing lawns, replacing them with native and water-sipping plants.
Bartlett says the advantage to painted lawns is that it’s cheaper. It can cost several thousand dollars to re-landscape a yard with drought-friendly plant material.

When Should I Use Grass Paint
Grass Paint should not be used year around. If you are, there is an underlying issue that needs your attention! Think of brown grass as a symptom and grass paint as a way to relieve the discomfort of that symptom. For example, if you have a fever you do not expect a pill such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen to kill the bacteria, virus etcetera that may be causing your fever. You do however, take the pill to help you feel better and even let the fever subside temporarily. This is comparable. There is a reason why your grass is turning colors. It may be on the verge of dying due to a lack of water, malnutrition, infestation, or disease. Continuing to cover the issue with grass paint does nothing but mask the issue until it turns into a big problem. The grass paint can help alleviate the symptoms short term, but you will need to find the root cause of the problem to solve the issue long term.
Grass paint is great for temporary coverage of browning or yellowing spots in your yard while you work on the root issue and wait for the natural green to return. For example, if your lawn is browning due to dog urine, you can temporarily regreen the area while flushing the urine from the soil.
Grass paint is also great for shifting climates, like areas with seasonal droughts causing the grass to brown a bit due to water restrictions. Another good time to use grass paint is when your grass goes dormant and loses its popping-green hue.

Whats The Difference Between Spray And Granular Fertilizer
Liquid fertilizer comes in liquid format or as a concentrate, whereas granular fertilizer comes in little pellets. Liquid fertilizer is applied with a sprayer, whereas granular fertilizer is applied with a spreader.
Generally speaking, liquid fertilizer is going to be faster acting and go directly to the roots, whereas granular fertilizer will take time. With liquid fertilizer, youre less likely to burn your lawn, whereas with granular, its quite easy to burn your lawn. Granular, on the other hand, is cheaper and faster to apply. Commercial And Residential Applications
Hydroseeding has been an effective and preferred method of growing commercial lawns for the last few decades and is used by several government agencies including the US Forest Service.
This grass planting method is also used for reseeding large areas that have been damaged by natural disasters such as wildfires, mudslides, etc.
With regards to residential application, spray on grass seed is not recommended for areas smaller than 0.5 acres, owing to the costs of setting up the equipment. But on a brighter note, there is little or no other investment needed to hydroseed a large area once the machine is set up.
Even though hydroseeding for residential lawns is done by professional lawn care services that drive in large specialized hydroseeding trucks loaded with slurry, there are several new products available that allow you to spray grass seed yourself in smaller areas.

A fertilized lawn is noticably different than one that isnt. Its greener and more full of grass with fewer bare patches. It also grows faster. If you dont fertilize your lawn, weeds will eventually overtake the grass, and youll have to completely resod your lawn if if gets too
In addition to fertilizing your lawn, you should also recycle grass clippings into the lawn when mowing using a mulching blade. The clippings will decompose and provide some amounts of natural fertilizer to your lawn.

Spraying on grass seed guarantees that the grass seeds have a good starting point to grow efficiently. Using natural materials also anchors the grass seeds to the dirt, whereas hand seeding involves using nets to hold the seeds down.
Although hand seeding costs less, the amount of work and worse growing conditions make it the worse choice of the two.
