Why Is Summer Fertilizer Important For Your Lawn

by greenacres | Jun 12, 2018 | Blog

For many, the lawn is a great way to increase curb appeal. It can also make a great place to play or relax, and is an important extension of the home. That being said, summer is just as important when it comes to the proper fertilizer as winter is and there are a few different reasons why.

Water Deeply But Not Too Often

  • Too much watering can lead to poor growing conditions and disease problems.
  • Water only when your lawn needs it, usually no more than once a week when there is no rainfall.
  • Apply at least 2.5 cm of water. Put a tuna or pet food can on your lawn to measure how much you’ve watered. Stop watering when it’s full.
  • Consider the soil type and surface features. Grass growing on compacted, fine soil or on slopes needs lighter, more frequent watering.

Type Of Lawn Fertilizer

You must decide what type of fertilizer you wish to use. There are different types of fertilizer that function differently. The granular fertilizer provides you with complete control of the lawn fertilizing schedule. Liquid fertilizers are effective for the rapid growth and color, and vigorous development of plants.

The organic lawn fertilizer can be made at home. It directly feeds nutrients back into the soils and recovers soil fertility for effective plant growth. Synthetic fertilizers are affordable, water-soluble, and quickly absorbed by plants.

Choosing The Right Mixture

100% Organic Lawn Fertilizer 10

A complete fertilizer with a high ratio of both nitrogen and potassium is essential for enhanced rooting, cold hardiness, disease resistance, and wear tolerance. An ideal fall fertilizer blend has a nitrogen to phosphorus to potassium ratio of 24-4-12 with isobutylidene diurea . In this formulation, a small amount of nitrogen is immediately available to the plant, while the rest is in slow-release form, allowing it to slowly break down and provide an extended feeding to the grass. Be wary of applying a fertilizer with too much phosphorus , as the run-off can damage to rivers and streams.

For flower and vegetable gardens, a mild fertilizer feeding in the fall will replenish the soil and prepare it for a quicker green-up when planting begins the following spring. Gardens do better with this approach than with a heavy dose of fertilizer in the early spring.

Understand The Nutrients Requirements

Understanding the nutrient requirement is very crucial. Liquid lawn fertilizers contain three basic nutrients, i.e., Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium. These three elements play different roles in the overall growth and development of plants.

Nitrogen helps in forming dark green leaves and promotes rapid plant growth. Phosphorus ensures deep root nourishment, vigorous plant development and improves immunity against climate change and dry seasons. Lastly, potassium is highly effective for strong grass growth.

Apply The Correct Summer Weed And Feed Product

If you are going to fertilize in the summer, use the correct product. Do not apply a fast release fertilizer. Always look at the three numbers on the bag. You want to look for something that says summer on the bag. Years ago, people used primarily fast-release agriculture-grade fertilizers on their lawns.

These products often applied too much nitrogen at one time, and the microbes in the soil couldnt break it all down. The excess nitrogen in the fertilizer in the soil caused the grass to dry out. This made the lawn look burned. But you can still apply a weed and feed fertilizer in June, July or August. Just use caution as the temps increase.

Most fertilizer today uses a slow-release product which means nutrients are released slowly to the lawn. Microbes in the soil break down the nitrogen in the particles over time, thereby releasing nutrients slowly and steadily over a 6-8 week period, which means no lawn burn.

Water Deeply And Infrequently

Dry, hot weather can deplete your soil moisture. Moisture stress can lead to wilted grass blades, reduced shoot and root growth, and greater susceptibility to pests and weeds.

To combat this, you should water thoroughly about once or twice a week, so long as your region isnt experiencing any drought conditions that call for water restrictions. The water should reach 46 inches deep. If youre unsure, push a screwdriver into your soil. If you meet a lot of resistance, you need to water more. If it slides in too easily, you need to water less.

Its best to water your lawn in the early morning, before sunrise if you can. Thatll keep the sun from drying out the moisture before your lawn is able to soak it up. Pay attention to weather forecastsyou dont want to water too much on weeks when it will rain.

Applying Lawn Fertilizer In Summer

What is the best lawn fertilizer to use in the summer time ...

When it comes to applying your lawn fertilizer during the summer, there are important things to know. You should ask yourself what type of grass you have, what the climate is, what fertilizer you prefer, and how you want the lawn to look.

Every part of the country has a different climate. For example, in Illinois, its very humid and hot, with temperatures that fluctuate throughout the day. In places like Idaho, the temperatures are relatively unchanging, and there is much less humidity.

The climate can make a difference in how the fertilizer works. Also, you may have a different grass type because of the environment in which you live.

Warm-season and cool-season grasses are the primary types. Of course, warm-season grasses can include Zoysia and Bermuda.

They thrive and become very green during the summer. Plus, they are creeping grasses, so they spread across the lawn and look like vines.

Generally, these grasses have brown leaves during the fall. However, they green up again in the spring and summer. Right before that greening happens, you need to apply the fertilizer.

With cool-season grasses, you may find they can withstand the temperature changes. They also have a bigger tolerance for drought and disease. Examples of cool-season grasses can include rye, fescue, and bluegrass.

Often, they green-up and grow more in the spring or the fall. Theyre dormant in winter and summer. This means that they dont need a lot of fertilizer in the summer.

Fertilizing In Spring And Summer

Youll notice the fertilizer numbers 25-5-10 on our IFA Spring & Summer fertilizer. A slow release of nitrogen delivers even, consistent feeding throughout hot summer months. Plus, with slightly more Potassium than the previous steps, youre supporting the lawns ability to absorb water, produce proteins, and stay healthy.

Go For Slow Release Fertilizers

Summer Lawn Fertilizer

Synthetic fertilizers are usually of two types. Slow-release and quick release. Quick-release fertilizers go into action almost immediately after they are applied. Whereas, slow-release fertilizers work over a long period of time.

Asides that, slow-release fertilizers usually have a gentle impact on the turfgrass, and unlike quick release fertilizers, they pose minimal risk of burning to your grass.

Scotts Summer Lawn Food

I found this Scotts product that is quite interesting because it just shows that the corporate technical managers at Scotts also agree with me on my slow play strategy.

The only nutrient value in this fertilizer is nitrogen. Its a 34-0-0. Now at first glance, 34% nitrogen is VERY high, but that can be deceiving. I have read deep into the label to reveal to you some little known facts about this product. The product may be 34% nitrogen, but 17% of that is made slow release by coating it with polymers. Urea itself will green up your lawn nicely but only lasts for about 28 days and fades quickly thereafter. The Scotts folks extend this time by formulating half of their Urea in this product coated in polymers that cause the Urea nitrogen to be released much more slowly. This gives you some quick release green and some slow release on the backend. Pretty smart.

Another reason that its a good slow play is the bag rate. The bag rate is the easy way to find out how much of the product to put down. Remember, I always recommend that the very first thing you do when taking on a lawn program is to measure your lawn and section it out by 1000 sq ft sections. Here is a recent video I did showing you how to measure your lawn.

There Is A Right Way To Water

Water your lawn regularly, thoroughly, and during the coolest times of the day to prevent evaporation. Thorough watering ensures roots will grow deeper and your lawn will remain lush. Pay attention to water restrictions, rainfall, grass type and soil type to ensure your lawn gets sufficient water, but not too much.

The Keys To Summer Lawn Care

When making a summer lawn care plan, its best to think of the season in phases: Early, mid, and late summer. How you care for your lawn varies according to the phase. For example treating for pests like grubs, is best done in the early summer before they have a chance to become established and damage the roots of your grass. A typical summer lawn care schedule to keep your lawn green in summer heat might look like this:

Advanced Lawn Food Natural Liquid Fertilizer

Espoma Organic Lawn Food Summer Revitalizer

Grass needs complete lawn food and that is what the brand Simple Lawn Solutions have. This Advanced Lawn Food is an excellent NPK source, with a 16-4-8 ratio. It also includes a combination of essential macronutrients, as well as seaweed and shrimp.

Its also simple to add, with the quick-to-use sprayer connected to the bottle. To make the grass thrive and remain green, the solution includes plenty of potassium, nitrogen, and phosphate. It feeds the roots as well and ensures strength.

This product is intended for use on the grass of all types. These include Zoysia, Centipede, and St. Augustine. It may also be used on Bahia, Deer, Kentucky Bluegrass, and several more.

One drug bin uses about 3,200 square feet of grass. To find out how big your yard is first you might want to do some calculations.

What Is Lawn Fertilizer

Here I am talking about products that only contain nutrients or soil amendments. Those being N-P-K and/or micronutrients and carbon or bio-stimulants. We are not talking about weed and feeds which contain fertilizer + weed control, or other dual use products. Its important to understand that fertilizer is just nutrients and amendments for the lawn. If you need to kill weeds, bugs or fungus, I recommend applying those as separate treatments in summer.

Confused already? Please review this blog post I wrote earlier this season that talks about the basics of lawn fertilizer. If you are a beginner, it will arm you with the knowledge needed when heading to the store.

The Second Number Represents The Percentage Of Phosphorus

Phosphorus is critical in developing and strengthening a healthy root system of turfgrass. If only nitrogen is applied to the lawn, the grass will be nice and green, but as watering or a drought hits the grass will be greatly impacted. Having strong roots in your grass will keep your lawn healthy through the changing weather and stresses of the seasons.

Phosphorus or P is a primary plant nutrient that is involved in the metabolic processes responsible for transferring energy throughout the plant. Its crucial to introduce phosphorus when first establishing turfgrass and continue application as the grass grows. An abundance of phosphorus allows plants to grow more efficiently.
