How Loud Is Too Loud

I was kicked off a property for mowing her lawn on a Sunday

When it comes to your mowing your lawn, the noise is the part that can get you in trouble.

Most communities have noise compliance laws that determine what noises are too loud. These laws vary from place to place, so you should check your local municipal codes , but the noise limit for densely populated districts is usually around forty five decibels in my neighbourhood it is 45dB for homes and 35 dB for apartment complexes.

Now, how loud is 45 dB? Decibels are the standard measurement of noise and, 45dB is surpisingly quiet. 60dB is the volume of a normal conversation. 45dB is basically ambient noise whereas 90dB is the sound of your typical hairdryer on high.

But wait, does this mean it is illegal for me to simply talk on my property? Or blow dry your hair? No, thankfully, noise laws only apply to noises audible from 25 feet of your property, which makes a lot of sense. It basically is the same as being able to make whatever noise you want until your neighbours hear it clearly. If you neighbours can hear you talking as if you are in the room with them, you are probably talking too loud. So, this is great! Except, while it depends on the size of your property and your model of lawnmower many companies have invested in making quieter lawn mowers for a premium price but even the quietest smaller mowers are at least 60dB from 25 feet, way too loud.

What Is The Best Time I Can Mow My Lawn

However, legalities aside, there are actually some rules about the best practices for mowing your lawn from a practical standpoint. If you want the best for your lawn, most landscaping professionals would recommend you do it after 8:00am and before noon. Think about it! Any earlier and your grass will still be wet from the dew. Wet grass is not as easy to cut and it is harder to clean up. For some cheaper mowers, it could even damage the blades. Not only that but by cutting your lawn before noon you avoid being stuck in the hot sun for too long! You could also do this in the early afternoon when the sun has started to fall but, after 6:00pm is when dew starts to form on your lawn, so the consensus is make sure to mow your lawn before 6:00pm.

If you mow your grass too late you can risk bacteria and fungus growing in your lawn. By mowing the lawn, you weaken the grass and it needs a few hours to recover from the trauma of being cut. When you combine that weakened state with moisture it makes your grass a prime place for bad organisms to grow. That being said, if you live in a warmer and drier climate, you probably do not get a lot of dew and this should not be a huge concern.

Can We Get All Of Our Work Done? (Mowing Lawns On A Sunday!)

You may ask yourself, How early can I cut my grass? Theoretically, you can do yard work any time you please. It is your property, after all. If, for some reason, you felt the need to fire up the engine at two oclock in the morning and cut your grass, you certainly could.

However, it goes without saying that the middle of the night is probably not the best time to be outside mowing.

What you may not realize is that you might be breaking the law by choosing to mow too early in the morning or too late in the evening.

Plus, theres the fact that your neighbors will be very unhappy with you for disturbing them.

Depending on where you live, lawn care professionals are not allowed to start working until 7 or 8 in the morning during the week. These times are not a suggestion. There are communal ordinances in place that dictate when work may start to avoid creating a ruckus too early in the morning.

On weekends and holidays, yard equipment is prohibited from running before 8 or 9 in the morning. Again, this time is dependent upon where you live and what the ordinances say in your area.

So, take the time to do some research online or call your local officials to avoid facing a fine for making noise outside too early in the day. Youve already invested money in making your property look appealing, so you probably dont want to shell out more money to pay a fine that could have been avoided.

What Time Can You Mow The Lawn On A Sunday

Between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. is the best time for cutting grass on Sundays. This gives you a total of eight hours to curate the lawn, which should be more than enough time. If you fail to capitalize on this period, you really do not have many excuses for your actions.

Of course, arising problems may prevent you from utilizing this period. But, if your timeframe has gone by, it is best to just wait for the next day. The grass is not going anywhere and an extra day will not ruin your whole property.

Here is another etiquette you should follow: always ask your neighbor beforehand. They may have plans of their own or might prefer the tranquility all throughout Sunday. You do not want to be a social outcast because you could not wait an extra day before cutting your lawn.

So, ask them whether it is okay to do so on that day. If they give you the green light, then mow away to your hearts content. After all, mowing the lawn, smelling the fresh grass, seeing the water drops sparkle in the sunshine is a great pastime for many homeowners.

But if they do have plans and prefer a quiet atmosphere for the day, be respectful of their wishes and do not touch your mower. You will be doing your neighbors and reputation a world of good.

Taking care of your lawn is such a joyous and fruitful activity for most people living in the suburbs. But, we should always be mindful and respectful of our neighbors and the community at large, especially on weekends.

Is It Rude To Mow Your Lawn On Sunday

Personally, I think you should mow your lawns on the weekend. When I was a kid, my father would use his gasoline cylinder mower every Sunday at 8:00 am before we ate breakfast and went to church. Now, I do the same! Mowing your lawn on the weekend when you are not as stressed or as busy really gives you the time to enjoy being outdoors, appreciate the aroma of cut grass, and feel productive while also relaxing through humble physical labor! And, on weekends, your neighbors are probably less prone to being irritated.

What To Know About Mowing Your Lawn On Sunday

In the U.S. and most of the western world, Sundays are widely regarded as a day of rest, religious activity, socialization, and other leisurely pursuits. Some families go to church, some people go jogging or cycling, and some people take the opportunity to catch up on some precious sleep.

This also applies to many landscaping crews. There are very few instances where you will see professional crews that will work on Sundays. I never worked on Sundays for religious purposes whereas some I worked with did the same to at least have one day off even during the height of mowing season.

There are even ordinances in most every location that prohibit professional landscaping crews from mowing on Sundays.

Alternatively, some see Sunday as an opportunity to catch up on some long overdue housework. Cleaning the house, doing the laundry, and mowing the lawn are just a few of the tasks some people may be too busy for during the week.

The latter activity is our primary focus today because it can easily trigger controversy at both neighborhood and societal levels. The question of whether it is OK to use a lawnmower on a Sunday can be approached in one of two ways.

Is It Too Late To Cut Grass At 8pm

When is the best time of day to mow my lawn? Morning ...

You can use thesecalculators to find out how long it should take to mow your lawn and plan ahead! As an example, if according to the calculator it would take me an hour to mow my lawn I would add half an hour. As a result, the latest I should mow my lawn would be 8:30PM. So, I would say for most people 8:00PM is not too late to mow your lawn.

Can You Mow Your Lawn On Sundays

Yes, you can mow your lawn on Sunday, or any other day for that matter. It is your lawn, so you are well within your right. But whether you should mow it or not is a whole other matter.

Lawn mowers are loud machines. The most standard ones make sound up to 90 decibels, which is way above the limit in residential areas. For comparison, it is louder than buses and trucks on the highway.

Plus, most lawn mowers do not have a very efficient muffler. So, the sound of the engine is hardly concealed or absorbed. Thus, if you turn your mow on, you can be sure that your neighbors will hear it.

This will cause problems in the neighborhood on any day of the week. Hence why we do no promote mowing the lawn very early in the morning, around 6 or 8 a.m. The same goes for late at night, after 10 p.m., when people are preparing to or already sleep.

However, this is different during the weekend. This is the only period for a majority of your neighbors to relax and take a break from work or school. Chances are that they are sleeping well past 8 a.m. or are having a good time late at night. So, turning your mow on at that time is not going to go down well.

That is why the safe period for mowing on the weekend is around 9 or 10 a.m. We recommend you start closer to 10 a.m., just to make perfectly sure. Also, you should finish any mowing activity before the evening on Saturdays and Sundays.
