How To Make Your Lawn Green

The health and greenness of your grass throughout the growing season have a lot to do with what type of turf you grow. Different varieties have advantages that make them more suitable for specific conditions. Zoysia grass is best for shady areas. Bermudagrass is an all-around favorite for warm-season grass for hot summers like those in the Southeast. Research at the University of Georgia has demonstrated that TifTuf Bermudagrass, sold exclusively through The Turfgrass Group, greens up sooner, is more drought-tolerant, and stays green longer than other leading bermudagrass varieties. Why Is My Lawn Turning Brown In Spots

When your lawn is covered in brown patches, there is no splendour in the grass. Even with regular watering, fertilizer and lots of care, different causes can turn green grass brown. Before taking any remedial measure, the main cause is to be ascertained. Keeping lawns in a healthier condition prevents many problems and helps in quick grass recovery. Different factors that make grass turning brown are-

; Grass Turning Brown Despite Watering If the lawn is poorly drained, brown patches may appear. Water that remains unabsorbed for more than 24 hours makes the roots of the grass die and turn brown.

; Too Much Fertilizer- Though fertilizer is an important ingredient for a green and healthy lawn, an excessive quantity of it is bad for grass. Using too much fertilizers damage the roots of the grass and causes it to form brown patches.

; Dog Urine- Dog urine turns green lawns into brown patches. It contains a high amount of nitrogen, which is quickly absorbed by grass and cause burned, dead spots similar to the excessive dose of fertilizer.

; Blunt Balder Of Mower- Mowing the lawn regularly keeps grass looking good. However, dull mower blades that dont cut cleanly shred grass, causing brown patches of dead grass. When patches appear frequently after mowing, sharpen or replace the blades in your lawnmower and see if it makes a difference.

Feed To Control Weeds

Imagine your very own backyard golf greens. We make it ...

We know we have to fertilize;the tomato plants;in our gardens or the houseplants on our window sills. But it’s easy to overlook the necessity of spreading fertilizers over our grass. Perhaps it is because the individual grass plants work in unison, together forming something we;know as “the lawn.” But it’s more accurate to think of a lawn as millions of individual plants that need to be fed on a regular basis.

Fertilizing your lawn goes hand-in-hand;with lawn weed control. As your grass takes in the fertilizer’s nutrients, its root system will expand and begin to cover any bare spots. Weed seeds count on those bare spots to take hold. When you remove those spots, you’re hitting weeds where it really hurts. Ideally, thanks to your fertilizing and other maintenance efforts, you’ll get to a point where your grass is so healthy that it crowds out most weeds.

The best way to satisfy your turf plants’ hunger is with slow-release fertilizers, which extend the feeding period and are less likely to burn grass than other formulas.;You may also opt to feed your grass and;control weeds at the same time, using a “weed and feed” fertilizer, which is essentially food for grass and poison for weeds. Keep in mind that these fertilizers are not organic and can be applied only twice a year, typically.

Follow A Fertilizer Schedule

The Scotts company, a major fertilizer manufacturer,;recommends applying lawn fertilizers in four stages. The exact dates will, of course, vary from region to region. Another factor is the kind of grass you grow. So always read the package labels carefully before applying, and pick the brains of the staff at local garden centers or a local extension service.

As an example of a typical fertilizer schedule, if you live in the northeastern United States and if your lawn is;a mix of cool-season grasses, you might begin by feeding the grass in May with a product that contains a pre-emergent to prevent crabgrass from growing. Follow that up in June;with another lawn fertilizer;that performs two jobs at once. In this case, the other job is controlling;broad-leaved;weeds. For the latter, you need a product that contains a;post-emergent herbicide designed to kill weeds that have begun growing in your lawn.

In mid-summer, bugs and drought are two of the greatest enemies of your grass.

Last but not least, when you;winterize your yard;in autumn, don’t forget your grass. It’s not difficult to remember which fertilizers to shop for at this time, because they will often contain “winterizer” in their names. These products are designed to help your grass build a deeper root system to weather the winter.

How To Make Grass Thicker

In addition to choosing the right grass in the first place and regularly aerating your lawn, you can do a few additional things to make your grass thicker

  • Address diseases. Avoid mowing when the lawn is wet and check for signs of disease or fungal infection. This may appear as powdery residue or colored patches or spots. Also, check for indications of pest damage .;
  • Ensure that your soil is healthy. Check for your local extension field office and obtain a soil-testing kit. It will alert you to nutrient deficiencies that may be responsible for your thinning lawn.;
  • Water regularly and apply a nitrogen fertilizer. Dont worry, well discuss more about this below.;

How To Deal With Grass In Summer Heat

The dog days of summer are a constant worry for homeowners, as just a few days without rain can really impact a once-lush lawn. Then theres the heat to contend with!;

We cant give you any tips for how to stay cool yourself in the summer heat, but we can provide some recommendations to help support your grass:

  • Use appropriate mowing techniques. Longer grass will help to shade the roots and prevent any harmful exposure to the sun.; This will also help the roots of the grass grow deeper, thus outcompeting weeds and creating a denser turf. That said, use a blade height of about four inches in summer, mow less frequently, and mow earlier in the day.;;;;;
  • Avoid watering in the heat of the day, choose early morning or late evening instead. Keep in mind that your lawn will need about one inch of water a weekbut it can tolerate about half an inch every 14-days, depending on water restrictions in your area .;

How to keep grass green in a drought?

If youre starting from scratch, youre in luck. Its easy to find drought-resistant and fast-growing grass seeds, especially like the fescues we mentioned earlier. These grasses establish themselves quickly, dont require a lot in the way of maintenance, and are one of our best bets for having a green lawneven in periods of drought.

If youre not starting out with a new lawn, however, there are still some things you can do to keep your grass green during drought :

Nitrogen Drives The Bus

The number one way to increase the green color in your lawn is with Nitrogen. Nitrogen is one of the big three macronutrients needed in the greatest quantities for healthy turf. It promotes top growth in the lawn by pushing the production of chlorophyll in the plant. More green top growth means the plant can grab more sunlight for photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is how plants make their own food which is used to produce more roots. More roots mean more support for more top growth ongoing, which makes the lawn thicker over time.

When you look at bags of lawn fertilizer, you see 3 numbers. This is called the analysis.

With Milorganite, those numbers are 6-4-0.

The first number there, 6, represents nitrogen which means that 6% of everything in the bag is nitrogen. Milos nitrogen is naturally slow releasing which gives you the confidence to know it will not burn the lawn, but its also better for the grass plants as they get the feed coming over time, rather than flushed in all at once, which can shock the lawn.

Because its a natural source of nitrogen, it works better in hot weather so it makes a great late spring and summer application. Microbes in the soil also benefit from Milo applications which means it not only turns the lawn green, but it improves your soil structure at the same time.

If you flip the bag over and read the label, you can see the concentrations of elements contained in Milorganite. Notice the 2.5% iron content especially.

Spend For Premium Seed

Can You Put Too Much Iron In Your Lawn? (And How Can I ...

If you need to seed a bare patch or your grass is so thin that you need to overseed, invest in a top-quality mix. Check the bag’s label; a premium blend will name individual cultivars, such as ‘Midnight’ Kentucky bluegrass, while common names, like tall fescue, indicate older, lower-quality seed types. The pros agree: Cheaper seed will never perform really well, no matter how much you fertilize.

You might also consider a custom mix. Online specialty seed retailers, such as SeedSuperStore.com, cherry-pick top-performing seed types and can create a blend optimally suited to your site, with no weed seeds. Or, if you’re looking for something special, like darker color or finer leaf texture, you can tailor a mix accordingly. Expect to pay more than double what home-center seed costs.

Water Your Lawn Properly

Grass does like water but if you implement the wrong watering routine it can have a detrimental effect on your lawn.

The trick for your watering routine is to water less often but give it plenty of water when you do.

If you water your lawn every day it will encourage the root system to stay near the surface as that is where it is getting the water from.

When you water your lawn less often the roots will have to grow and look for the water and this means it will grow a healthy deep root system.

There is a simple way to test if your lawn needs to be watered:

  • The way to tell if your lawn needs water is when you stand on it and the blades bounce back up it doesnt need water.
  • If you stand on your lawn and the blades dont bounce back that means the grass is wilting and needs to be watered.

If you train your lawn to have a deep root system there is a greater chance you will have a thick green lawn whereas if you water too regularly your lawn will basically become dependant on you to feed it water.

Lawns with a deep root system are healthier and more drought-resistant so that is what you want your lawn to be like.

Do I Need To Water The Lawn

During dry weather you should raise the height of the cut, so that only the tips of the grass are clipped. Allow these clippings to remain on the lawn to help reduce evaporation. Most lawns will recover quite quickly from a period of drought, so to practice the best lawn care only start watering the lawn when absolutely necessary. Once you begin you will need to continue at weekly intervals until sufficient rain has fallen.

Use a sprinkler to water in the evening and minimise evaporation but be sure to apply the right amount of water: too much water is wasteful and too little will cause the roots to come to the surface so aim to allow the water to soak into a depth of about 10cm.

Early Stages Of Grub Chinch Bug Or Sod Webworm Damage

Make Grass Green with Liquid Iron

In the early stages of insect damage, your grass can first appear wilted, then yellow, and ultimately brown. There are different types of lawn pests that can damage your lawn. Chinch bugs suck, sod webworms chew, and grubs feed on the roots. But all 3 can damage your grass and cause a change in color.

PRO TIP: There are preventative treatments for insects that can help you avoid damage in the first place. Of course, there are also ways to address an active insect problem. The trouble with insect damage is that it can often mimic disease damage . Thats why its beneficial to have a professional diagnose your problem.
