How Cr Tests Lawn Mowers And Tractors

DR PRO-21 Battery Mower

CR is testing more walk-behind battery mowers than ever, to keep up with new releases in the rapidly growing category. For instance, weve doubled the number of new self-propelled mowers. In total, we rate 39 walk-behind battery mowers this year.

To get you ratings and reviews of the latest models by early spring, our testers travel to Florida to conduct tests in late winter at grounds we specially prepare each year. We plant 1,800 pounds of grass seed . We cut 500,000 square feet of grass in three modesmulching, side-discharging, and bagging a total of 3,000 pounds of clippings. We mow both level turf and slopes to get a feel for each and every model. We also review the convenience features on every model we assess.

The Overall Score for each model in CRs mower ratings incorporates all that performance data, along with predicted reliability and owner satisfaction ratings from our latest member surveys. The surveys leverage data on more than 78,000 lawn mowers and tractors that members purchased between 2010 and 2020.

Not sure which kind of mower you want? Start with our lawn mower buying guide. CR members can browse our comprehensive ratings of more than 100 lawn mowers, including almost four dozen battery-powered lawn mowers from a variety of brandsAtlas, Black+Decker, Cub Cadet, Ego, DeWalt, DR, Greenworks, Hart, Kobalt, Makita, Oregon, Ryobi, Skil, Snapper, Stihl, Sun Joe, Toro, Troy-Bilt, Wen, and Worx.

How Long Does It Take To Charge A Lawn Mower Battery

Ensure that you set the battery charger to 12 volts and 10 amps or less. Plug the charger in the charger should charge the battery fully in one hour at the 10-amp setting. However, you might have to charge the battery longer if your amp setting is lower.

Did you know?

Cordless lawnmowers have the mobility of a gasoline-powered mower and the environmental friendliness of a corded electric mower.

Also Great: Honda Hrx217vka Lawn Mower

*At the time of publishing, the price was $620.

If you strongly feel that gas is the way to go, we recommend the Honda HRX217VKA Lawn Mower. The Hondas roughly $600 price tag puts it clearly in the upper echelon of gas mowers, but all indications show that it is worth the cost, both in performance and long-term durability. This mower stands apart for its superior cut quality, its unique ability to balance the ratio of mulched and bagged grass, the way it can shred leaves enough to replace raking entirely, and its nearly indestructible composite mowing dome.

Most mowers have a single blade, but the Honda, like our Ego pick, has two. This doubles the amount of cutting edges and results in a lawn that, as Berendsohn puts it, has a velvet finish. With its two blades, the Honda cuts grass into smaller pieces than other mowers we tested did; this leads to better mulching and more efficient bagging .

In the fall, the Honda is able to shred leaves, thanks to its Versamow System. This leaf-shredding feature may sound like a minor thing, but its actually effective enough that, in some cases, its able to replace a leaf blower, which can cost hundreds of dollars. According to Honda , if you set the mower at a certain level between bag and full-mulch, it forces the leaves to stay longer in the mowing dome, which completely shreds them and sends them back onto the lawn or disposes of them in the bag.

Is It Safe To Cut Wet Grass With An Electric Mower

According to the Ego mower manual, you should avoid cutting wet grass with your electric mower for two reasons. First, mowing on wet grass is a safety hazard and can cause you to slip or fall and potentially injure yourself. Secondly, the moisture can affect the electrical components of the mower and cause serious damage the warranty doesn’t cover.;

Wet grass can also be much more difficult to clean off the underside of your deck, and, unlike gas-powered mowers, you can’t just spray it off with a hose. Only cutting dry grass means you’ll have a much faster time cleaning up.

Residential Or Commercial Quality

Earthwise 2120

On the surface, theres not a huge difference between commercial quality and residential quality walk-behind battery lawn mowers.

At the high end, power doesnt seem to vary much. In fact, the most powerful weve testedEGOs Peak Poweris technically a residential model.

What commercial battery mowers have going for them is a design and feature set thats much more tuned in to what professionals ask for. Some of that is merely the difference between what homeowners and professional crews prefer on a mower. But there are differences in the quality of the components that brands choose for their separate lines. That said, the best residential models rival commercial quality from what weve seen.

Greenworks Commercial and Stihl rely exclusively on their dealer networks. You get additional support during and after the sale that you wont find at big-box retailers.

Electric riding mowers are a completely different ballgame. With those, youll find a much greater difference in design and performance, along with a massive gap in cost.

Residential: Ego Z6 Residential Zt Mower

The EGO Z6 Zero Turn Riding Mower shakes up what you can expect from a battery-powered riding mower at a price thats very compelling compared to the other options out there. In our opinion, the design team clearly did their homework, and EGOs first shot at a battery-powered zero turn is a home run.

EGO initially teased their Z6 zero turn with the tag line Worth the wait.

It totally was. Price: $4999

What Types Of Lawns Should You Mow With Them

Now comes the issue of lawn size. This is probably the biggest issue or drawback when considering a battery-powered lawnmower, as opposed to a gas lawnmower. They dont last as long. Most manufacturers claim that with cordless varieties, you can expect up to 1-hour of runtime on a full charge. On average, anywhere between 30 minutes to 1-hour. With this being said, some can last more/less and some cordless lawnmowers feature dual battery packs, so you can double up the time . With a model such as this, youre getting about 45 minutes per battery, meaning about 90 minutes of runtime on a single charge. This comes at a higher price tag than a standard cordless lawnmower, so youll have to weigh the cost advantage when purchasing.

You can mow all types of lawn/grass with a battery-powered lawnmower. The primary issue youre going to run into is how much additional energy/power is required, for mowing thicker lawns. Generally, a battery-powered mower is a good option for

1. Flat lawns with few obstructions2. Thinner types of grass3. Grass that doesnt require you to mow it to a very short length 4. Lawns with minimum inclines or peaks, if any5. Lawns that are -acre or smaller

Again, you arent limited to mowing these types of lawns with a battery-powered lawnmower. However, theyre going to be the easiest and you will find they can replace a gas lawnmower in many of these instances.

Who This Is For

DR 62V Battery Lawn Mowers

If you want to be able to stand the sight of your yard this summer, youre going to need a lawn mower. Anything larger than a half-acre gets into riding-mower territory, but a self-propelled push mower is perfect for a half-acre or less. Going at a pace of about 3 mph , it will take about an hour to cut this amount of grass.

If you already own a gas mower thats less than a decade old, you will probably not notice a tremendous difference by upgrading to a newer gas mower. Upgrading to a cordless model is a more noticeable change you could immediately appreciate.

Care And Storage: Handle Folds Down For Easy Stowing

To stow the mower, fold the handle down and over the body to make a neat rectangle approximately 12-inches by 30-inches. Then, its easy to store under a worktable, in the corner, or wherever its convenient to shove until the next time you need to cut the grass. Just make sure its in a dry, clean spot and out of reach of children and either in a vertical or horizontal position with the battery chamber on top.

But, before you put it away, make sure to take off the grass catcher by lifting it by the handle and empty any greenery out of it. Its good to also dust out the mulching plug if you used it so no stalks dry out inside. Then replace the bag before folding and storing.

Dont use any solvents when wiping this machine clean. Because its made of plastic, albeit heavy-duty plastic, many commercial cleaners can damage the body. Instead take a clean, dry cloth and rub away any dirt, grease or dust. Also check the bolts to make sure everything is tight and ready for the next mowing adventure.

Problems Finding The Best Battery Powered Lawn Mower

Popular Mechanics just released their 71 Best Tools of 2021. Their pick for the best cordless mower was the Greenkworks MO60L423. Its a 25 wide, dual blade mowing monster, but its unavailable in Canada. None of the stores we checked Canadian Tire, Home Depot, Walmart, and even the Greenworks Canada website list the lawnmower as being available in Canada.

On another site, TopTenReviews, they recommend an EGO mower with a combination of features that isnt available in Canada. We have a self-propelled 7.5Ah version or a non-self-propelled 5.0 Ah version, but they recommend the non-self-propelled 7.5 Ah version.

Our goal is to save you the frustration, and provide you a straight-forward comparison and recommendation of the best cordless lawn mower Canada.

Are You Ready To Make The Leap To Battery Power

As with all decisions, there are pros and cons to making it. The same is true on wether or not to purchase a battery-powered mower. I will give you the rundown of both the positives and negatives of owning one after three summers of using my Ryobi machine. I chose Ryobi simply because they are the leader in battery-powered machinery/tools. Plus, it is carried by Home Depot. Ryobi has some sort of exclusive deal with Home Depot, so don’t look for a Ryobi mower at Lowe’s. They have their own brand called Kobalt. I really cannot say if one brand is better than the other, but any decently built battery-powered mower experience should be the same as mine.

    Residential: Kobalt 80v Max 21

As the top overall pick, EGOs Select Cut is also our best electric self-propelled mower for residential use. We cant, however, neglect to mention the Kobalt 80V KMP 6080-06 as another of our best electric lawn mower picks. It scored higher than the Select Cut in cutting power with remarkably good cut quality. It also scored excellent in value. For a battery-powered lawn mower, the Kobalt almost makes you forget its not gas.

The only chink in the armor is runtime, where it falls short of covering half an acre on a charge. We recommend it for lawns 1/3-acre or less. That still covers a pretty large percentage of homes. Plus, you can always buy extra batteries.
