Trying to force yourlawn to green-up before its ready, stay green longer, or grow too much duringthe summer will only create the very issues that make your lawn look unhealthy,which defeats the whole purpose.
When Should You Fertilize Your Lawn
Essentially, the perfect time to fertilize your lawn is just as it is running out of food from its last feeding which, with Jonathan Green fertilizer, means about three months after the last fertilization.
Early Spring In March or April, apply our Green-Up with Crabgrass Preventer to the lawn. This will gently feed it while helping it recover from winter and also control crabgrass before and after it germinates.

As the weather warms up, we all look forward to getting outside and enjoying time in our yards. Of course, we want our grass to be healthy and green, so applying lawn fertilizer at the right time is required. For most locations, that means giving your yard a good feeding between February and April followed by additional feedings in late spring, summer and fall to encourage healthy growth.

How Much Should I Apply
Were almost done, but while this answer is straightforward, it also requires math! Turfgrass researchers from UF/IFAS have found that applying one pound of slow-release nitrogen fertilizer for each 1,000 square feet is the Goldilocks amount per application in Florida. Too much, and you may be setting the lawn up for problems and lead to water pollution. Too little, and you cant brag for having the greenest lawn. Here is where the math comes in.
To determine how many pounds of the fertilizer provides one pound of N, divide 100 by the N number on the bag. For example, if it is a 10-0-5 fertilizer, divide 100 by 10 , which equals 10 pounds .
The only math left is to find out how many square feet are in your lawn. You can estimate by counting your steps as you walk the lawn, or use various online mapping sites, such as Property Appraiser County GIS departments.
When broadcasting the fertilizer, apply half the amount in one direction and then the other half in a perpendicular direction for good distribution. The directions on the bag are also pretty useful for this!

When Should I Fertilize
This one is pretty easy to understand based on how plants grow. Fertilizers are only taken up by plants when they are actively growing. So, it makes sense that you wouldnt apply fertilizers while the lawn is dormant.
You also dont want to encourage fresh growth going into cool temperatures or before all chance of frost has passed. Fresh, young growth is especially tender, and cold snaps can cause extra stress to the turf.
Therefore, if you need to fertilize the grass, only do so once it has completely greened up and actively growing, and once we have passed the average last frost date . April is a safe time to begin for the year and you should not fertilize beyond September.
How To Mow A Bermuda Grass Lawn
Mow newly planted bermuda grass lawns once seedlings have reached 2 inches high. Once its established, youll want to maintain your bermuda grass lawn at 1 to 2 inches, a slightly shorter height than many other types of lawn grasses. Mow frequently enough that you never have to remove more than of the grass height.

How To Fertilize A Bermuda Grass Lawn
About 4 weeks after applying the Starter Food, feed your bermuda grass lawn with Scotts® Turf Builder® Southern Lawn Food. Be sure to follow the directions on the label. Continue to fertilize every 6 to 8 weeks during the growing season, stopping when the grass naturally slows its growth in early fall.

As cool fall temperatures arrive, Zoysia grass slows and begins to go dormant. Your lawn care schedule slows as well. Zoysia grows best in southern areas. The farther north you live, the greater the impact weather conditions have on Zoysia’s success and survival. Weed Prevention and Fertilization
Prevent crabgrass and feed your established Zoysia lawn in early spring with Pennington UltraGreen Crabgrass Preventer Plus Fertilizer III 30-0-4. Apply this preemergent any time before weed seeds germinate, which starts when soil temperatures hit 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Wait at least four weeks after application to overseed.
Mowing

Should You Fertilize Before Or After Rain
Does it matter if you fertilize before a heavy rain? Yes, it does. This is not a good time to apply fertilizer because a heavy rainfall could wash away the fertilizer before it has an opportunity to break down and be absorbed. This is especially true on steep slopes.; If you would rather not waste your time and the money youve invested, its best to fertilize when no rainfall is expected for two days, or spread the fertilizer before it rains if youre anticipating only light rainfall. The light rainfall can substitute for watering in the fertilizer after application.

Best Conditions For Applying Grub Control
At their most destructive, grubs are sitting just below the surface of the soil, happily munching on grassroots. This is why the number one most important thing to remember when applying a grub killer, whether preventative or not, is to water the solution in. This ensures the insecticide soaks into the soil instead of just sitting on top. In order to maintain the most control of the environment when applying:
- Dethatch the affected area
- Apply the grub control on relatively dry soil
- Remember this is a chemical solution always wear rubber gloves and follow the label
- Some rain in the forecast is okay, but a heavy rainfall may wash the solution away
- Water half and inch to an inch deep after applying

First things first, always submit a soil sample or do a pH soil test to determine the nutrient that you need in plenty. This will help you in choosing a good fertilizer for Bermuda grass in your lawn.

Other Zoysia Grass Considerations
Zoysia grass establishes more slowly than some lawn grasses, but it forms a very dense carpet of grass beneath your feet. Few lawn weeds penetrate established Zoysia lawns. The grass spreads by above-ground stems called stolons and underground stems called rhizomes. This thick, dense growth earns favor among warm-climate sod producers and families that use their lawns heavily for lawn games and entertaining.
During its active growing season, Zoysia typically stays light to medium green. It turns brown when winter dormancy sets in, but it stays green much longer than Bermudagrass and other warm-season grasses. Plus, Pennington Zenith Zoysia keeps its green color longer than ordinary Zoysia grasses do. Some homeowners choose to overseed Zoysia lawns in fall with cool-season ryegrass for green winter color, but others appreciate its straw-like natural hue. Come spring, Zoysia lawns are among the first warm-season lawns to green up again.
Zoysia naturally develops a deep root system, and it’s very efficient at conserving moisture and resisting drought. During short drought episodes, the grass remains green. If drought and heat persist, Zoysia will go dormant, but it greens up quickly when watered again. Zoysia prefers full sun, but it tolerates light shade unlike Bermudagrass and other sun-loving, warm-season grasses.

After Applying Grub Killer
Once the grub control is applied, it is essential to care properly for your lawn afterward and ensure the solution gets where it needs to be. How To Water A Bermuda Grass Lawn
A few days after the grass begins to sprout, you can reduce watering frequency to twice per day, but apply more water each time. When seedlings are about an inch tall, begin watering once per day, giving about ¼ inch of water each time. To avoid erosion and runoff, try to apply the water only as fast as the soil absorbs it. Once your lawn becomes established, you can reduce watering to twice per week, but water more deeply each time. Aim for an inch or more of water per week to encourage deep rooting. In areas such as the East, where rainfall is more plentiful, your lawn may not need regular irrigation at all. You can tell the lawn needs to be watered when it takes on a kind of grayish cast and doesnt immediately bounce back when you walk on it. ;
