Mow At The Right Time Of Day

By choosing the best time of day to cut the grass, youll get the best results.

Mid-morning, when the morning dew has dried and before the heat of the day sets in is an excellent time to mow.

Late afternoon is another good time. It starts to cool and the grass can recover before the next dew set in.

You should avoid early morning as the dew makes the lawn wet and midday is generally too hot.

How To Mow With A Push Mower

Push mowers that run on gas or battery power and reel mowers are all considered manual mowers. In general, youll have to make more passes over your lawn with a push mower than with a riding mower, unless you upgrade to a large deck.

Battery-powered mowers come as corded or cordless models. Be careful not to mow over the cord when using a corded mower.

Choose a gas-powered push mower instead of a battery-powered mower if your grass is thick or your yard has slopes or hills. A gas-powered mower will run longer and give you more cutting power. Stay safe, and cut across a slope or hill, not up and down, so youll have better control of the mower.

Choose a self-propelled lawn mower if you want a push mower to do some of the work for you. It’s a good choice for cutting grass around trees and it can mow grass on some uneven terrain. These mowers are easy to maneuver, so you may be able to cut your lawn faster than with a riding mower that requires long turns.

When it comes to pro lawn mowing techniques, some people might go all out and buy and attachment for lawn striping. Luckily, you dont need to go this far to get a nice looking lawn. However, you should take measures to get an even surface.

Instead of following the same path every time you mow, you should alternate directions. This will prevent the grass from being pushed in one direction and help you create a more even surface on your yard. Its also one of the best ways to mow your lawn like a professional.

Diy Or Hire A Lawn Care Expert In My Area

When youre trying to find average lawn care pricing in New Zealand, you might start to wonder whether its a task you can tackle yourself. However, can you really put a price on convenience? Actually, you can, and youd be surprised at how little difference there is between hiring someone to mow your lawns, and doing them yourself.

You can put a reasonably hefty price tag on your time. Any time you spend mowing your lawns is time youre not spending with your family and friends. You also have to find a lawnmower for sale thats reasonably affordable, and that process is not easy either.

Once you buy the mower, you have to purchase fuel for it, pay for tuning costs, and servicing as well. If there are any mower repairs, then you have to do these too. And what about storage? The average property size is only getting smaller, which means that fewer people have garages and tool sheds in which to put their mower. No one wants to end up with a lawnmower in their laundry or living room.

It all sounds like a bit of a hassle, doesnt it? It might be easier to find someone in lawn care to hire who can do the job without you having to lift a finger.

How Often Should You Hire Someone To Mow Your Lawns

The million-dollar question is: how often should you mow your lawns? Or, how often should you get someone in to mow your lawns? There are many deciding factors in this question. It can depend on where you live, your climate, the weather conditions for specific days, weeks, and months, and how neglected your lawn has been in the past.

Lawns tend to thrive in spring and summer, so weekly or fortnightly is a common request by homeowners. In the colder months of the year, monthly is even more common. Lawn care service providers will often inform you of their schedule requirements and what they recommend for your lawn.

Even if youre on a set schedule, you should also feel confident to call your local lawnmower to see if they can squeeze you in more often, or for a one-off cut in-between.

The frequency of their services can also depend on your lawns height. If it has been some time since you last mowed the lawns yourself, and they are now overgrown, then it can many regular lawn mowing sessions to bring them back to a manageable standard. If you cut them down to a reasonable height in one go, you may be damaging your lawns beyond easy repair.

When you make contact with your chosen contractor, talk to them about your lawn height. They can then be more accurate with their pricing and outline how they can combat the problem for a picture-perfect yard.

What Is Involved In The Costs Of Lawn Care

You may be wondering how someone who offers lawn care services sets their pricing, and dont be afraid to ask. Often, supply and demand come into play, but it can also come down to the services they are offering and your unique situation.

If you require a service that your lawn care provider has to outsource, then this may come at a higher cost. You may also pay less for some services if you initially hire someone to mow your lawns. The more you can pack into one visit, the more competitively priced the costs of lawn care will be.

Where you live may also feature in the pricing structure of lawn mowing. If you are on the outskirts of a township, you live rurally, or your contractor has a per-kilometre rate, then these may appear on your invoice as well.

The best thing you can do is talk to your preferred lawn care provider. They can outline all costs with complete transparency so that you can avoid any unexpected fees.

Wet Grass Can Damage Your Lawnmower

How To Mow A Newly Sodded Lawn It’s NOT What One Might Think!

Gardeners are urged not to cut their grass when it is wet, regardless of the time of day, as this can end up causing irreparable damage to your lawnmower.

When excessive moisture makes its way into the machine’s fuel tank, this can cause erosion and contamination of any leftover fuel.

Damp grass cuttings may also stick to parts of the lawnmower or clump up around the blade itself, forcing the machine to work harder.

How To Mow With A Zero

Recommended for cutting grass on one to three or more acres, zero turn mowers are very easy to maneuver and are ideal for large, flat lawns. Zero turn mowers can make up to 180 degree turns, so they cut very close to obstacles.

As a rule of thumb, you wont need to do much trimming after cutting with a zero turn mower, and they mow faster than regular walk-behind mowers. Match the size of your lawn to the size of the cutting deck for best results.

And If Your Grass Is Really Out Of Control

If your lawn has been a little unkempt throughout the colder months and has grown with a mind of its own then fear not, still follow the one third rule but take it in stages over a number of weeks. Gradually decrease the cutting height on your lawnmower each time to reach your preferred grass length.

But only apply this to the smaller area you’d like to maintain, as mentioned above. Embrace the wildness in the rest of the lawn and allow it to flourish.

Or Compost Your Grass Cuttings

“Removing and composting all grass mowings also supports wildlife by reducing soil fertility,” continues Guy. “Running down fertility, assuming no fertiliser is applied, leads to turf becoming more sparse which allows room for wildflowers, particularly clovers, and wildlife.”

How To Mow With A Lawn Tractor

Lawn tractors or garden tractors are sometimes called riding mowers, but there are differences. As a rule of thumb, lawn tractors can cut large yards in swaths of grass up to 48-inches wide. They can also handle low-grade hills. Theyre comfortable to ride on and have detachable decks for adding attachments like snow blowers or other accessories.

Like riding mowers, these machines cant make sharp turns, so if you have trees or other objects in your yard, check the turning radius of your model. You can also make long turns or mow in circles.

What Grass Height Should You Mow Your Lawn Before Winter

Regularly mowing your lawn is one of the most essential aspects to keeping your grass healthy. The recommended mowing lengths vary based on the grass species that you have in your lawn. However, on average, your grass height for winter should be around 2 inches depending on grass type. Due to the cold winter temperatures, grass that is too short might go into shock and grass that is kept too long can be at greater risk of developing snow mold.

How To Mow With A Garden Tractor

Garden tractors are heavier and more powerful than lawn tractors, with stronger frames and bigger engines. Consider a garden tractor if you are mowing one to three or more acres. Models with big mowing decks can cut more grass in a relatively short period of time.

Garden tractors have heavy-duty transmissions, so you can add an aerator, backhoe, tiller or other lawn and garden accessory as needed for landscaping and year-round tasks.

While garden tractors can’t make sharp turns, they do have locking differentials you can use to mow on inclines.

How Much Should I Cut

Welcome To The Lawn: How to Mow Your Lawn

The Lawn Care experts at Timberline Landscaping recommend never taking off more than 1/3 of the grass length during a single mow. When too much grass is removed at a single time, the grass is much more likely to brown. This happens because the lower part of the grass is shaded and almost white in color when the grass is long. If cut too short, the tender part of the grass blade is exposed to the sun and burns easily.

Grass can get smothered and/or grow mold when a significant length is cut off all at once. The cut blades will accumulate on the newly cut grass surface and can stunt its growth. When the grass is stressed or burnt, weeds are more likely to invade.

When To Mow The Lawn

The lawn care and mowing calendar is not the same in Aberdeen as it is in York and its different again in Brighton.

Im used to the climate in Yorkshire so here is the Lawnsmith Yorkshire Mowing Calendar. If you are in Aberdeen youll be running a week or two behind in the spring and a week or two ahead in autumn. The reverse will be true for those basking in Brighton!

Growth will be starting in spring so start your lawn mowing with a high cut on preferably dry grass if possible.

Sometime this month as temperature and growth increases frequency will increase with 2weeks then 10 days then perhaps down to weekly mowing.

May & June Mow frequently during this time weekly if possible. You can also lower the cutting height but I wouldnt go below about 4cm unless youre wanting more work than necessary.

  • If dry, growth will slow but do mow at least every two weeks
  • If hot and dry: as above but raise the mowing height
  • If moisture levels are good mow as for May & June

The autumn rains make the end of August and September a good growing time so mow frequently. You can also lower the cut if you raised it for the summer but if your lawn is prone to moss you want to be raising the mowing height not lowering it.

Mowing will all but finish so raise the cut to winter height.

More than likely the last regular cut of the year. If you have a rotary mower use it on a dry lawn to suck up autumn leaves.

If Not Specified In The Lease Agreement

Nice Lawn by spenny

If the lease agreement does not specify who is responsible for mowing the lawn, many landlords and tenants take a common sense approach to the problem. When it comes to caring for the exterior of the property, a tenant generally takes responsibility for that in a single family home rental. In an apartment or multifamily rental property, the landlord generally assumes responsibility for common areas. If the issue of mowing the lawn becomes big enough that the landlord is threatening to evict you, it may be time for mediation to reach an agreement. If you and the landlord can reach an agreement about it, write it down and both of you sign and date it. Keep a copy for your records. The landlord will likely clarify the issue in the lease agreement when it is time to renew.

Choose Your Tool Wisely

It’s important to remember that no two lawns or gardens are the same even if they are side by side. Take into consideration the condition and size of your lawn, and your gardening needs when choosing the best tool for the job. Choose an electric lawnmower over a petrol one for the more eco-friendly option.

Can My Landlord Evict Me For Not Mowing The Lawn

Disputes between landlords and tenants generally arise when the division of labor and responsibility is not clearly defined in the lease agreement. If your landlord is threatening to evict you because you won’t mow the lawn, a misunderstanding about your responsibilities has ocurred. Whether your landlord can evict you for not mowing the grass depends largely on your lease agreement and what you’ve verbally agreed to do as a resident.
