According to Scotts, you should apply lawn fertilizer between February and April when your grass starts to green up and begins to actively grow. Essentially, if it looks like your grass is ready for its first mowing of the season, then it’s ready for lawn fertilizer.

According to Audubon.org, the average homeowner spends roughly 40 hours mowing their lawn each year, and we Americans spend $8.5 billion on lawn care products and equipment. Lawns are a major part of the gardening scene, with millions of acres in this country alone.

Keeping a lawn in tip-top shape can be a big job, but my approach to it is a little more relaxed than others. For example, heres my approach to lawn fertilizing:

Fertilizing your lawnI only fertilize my lawn a couple of times a year, once in the spring and then again in midsummer with a food specially blended for lawns. Youll find these blends higher in nitrogen than other elements . Nitrogen is what stimulates vigorous growth and deep green color.

I feed only a couple of times a year because I discovered that fertilizing more often meant too much growth I was working myself to death trying to keep it mowed and watered. So, by reducing the amount of fertilizer, Ive saved myself time and energy. Also, by allowing my grass to grow longer, just by an inch or so more in summer, Ive reduced my watering a bit more. The taller blades of grass cut down on water evaporation from the soil.

Water Deeply But Not Too Often

• Too much watering can lead to poor growing conditions and disease problems.
• Water only when your lawn needs it, usually no more than once a week when there is no rainfall.
• Apply at least 2.5 cm of water. Put a tuna or pet food can on your lawn to measure how much youve watered. Stop watering when its full.
• Consider the soil type and surface features. Grass growing on compacted, fine soil or on slopes needs lighter, more frequent watering.

When Is The Best Time To Fertilize Your Lawn In Florida

Q: I read somewhere that you should not fertilize your lawn in spring or during the hot months, so I didnt. Is now the right time, or am I too late now? Should I use plain fertilizer or a weed-and-feed fertilizer?

A: Yes, you can fertilize your lawn up until mid-October. Youre correct that fall is the best time to do this, after the hottest part of summer has passed. Fertilizing in spring can cause a flush of early growth that ultimately weakens the lawn. Fertilizing in the heat of summer can damage your lawn and the environment. The grass is typically dormant during hot weather, especially with conditions like the drought we had this year. Fertilizing when grass is dormant can burn the lawn. It wastes time and money and sends those nutrients into groundwater, rivers and lakes where they harm water quality and threaten aquatic creatures.

During fall, with the cool temperatures weve been having recently, lawn grasses put out new shoots and store nutrients in their roots. That makes this is a good time to fertilize.

How much to fertilize depends upon a number of factors. If you leave the grass clippings on your lawn, rather than bagging them up and removing them, you can get away with using less fertilizer. Fertilizer For Spring Summer And Fall: What To Apply And When

The proud owners of lush, thick, green grass understand what it takes to get and keep an enviable lawn and fertilizer is their superpower. Knowing all there is to know about how and when to fertilize is their advantage. If you have just had your lawn replaced with thick lush new sod then you want to keep it that way.

Fertilizing your grass isn’t as elementary as sprinkling whatever you have in the shed on your lawn. Fertilizers all present with three numbers that tell us a lot about what’s in the bag. The first number indicates how much nitrogen can be found in a particular fertilizer. The second number represents levels of phosphorus and the third, potassium. Follow this schedule and treat your lawn on a seasonal basis.

Spring

Keep in mind that there are other things you can do before it’s time to fertilize. In late May or early June, before the heat of the summer arrives, apply some slow release nitrogen. This will encourage the grass to rebuild.

A good dose of nitrogen rich fertilizer will also arm your lawn. Fighting off the stresses of summer, traffic, disease, heat, and drought. Fertilizer is its defense. If you can’t stand to sit around and do nothing when the snow melts and the grass that emerges looks like its dead, consider an herbicide. However, herbicides can be harsh on grass, so ensure your herbicide contains a little fertilizer to help your lawn fight the negative effects herbicides can have on grass.

Get Ready To Fertilize

Before applying you must prepare. start by determining the square footage of your yard then divide that number by 200 to get the number of pounds of Step 3 fertilizer you will need to cover your lawn.

yard width × yard length ÷ 200 = lb of Step 3

Keep in mind a 25 lb bag will feed up to 5,000 square feet while the 50 lb bag feeds up to 10,000 square feet. Its a good idea to add 10% to make sure you dont run out during the application.

As with previous fertilizer applications, you should use a broadcast spreader for a more even fertilizer application. You can use the same spreader to apply different types of fertilizer, just remember that the recommended fertilizer applications rates may differ between products.

Scotts Summer Lawn Food

I found this Scotts product that is quite interesting because it just shows that the corporate technical managers at Scotts also agree with me on my slow play strategy.

The only nutrient value in this fertilizer is nitrogen. Its a 34-0-0. Now at first glance, 34% nitrogen is VERY high, but that can be deceiving. I have read deep into the label to reveal to you some little known facts about this product. The product may be 34% nitrogen, but 17% of that is made slow release by coating it with polymers. Urea itself will green up your lawn nicely but only lasts for about 28 days and fades quickly thereafter. The Scotts folks extend this time by formulating half of their Urea in this product coated in polymers that cause the Urea nitrogen to be released much more slowly. This gives you some quick release green and some slow release on the backend. Pretty smart.

Another reason that its a good slow play is the bag rate. The bag rate is the easy way to find out how much of the product to put down. Remember, I always recommend that the very first thing you do when taking on a lawn program is to measure your lawn and section it out by 1000 sq ft sections. Lawn Fertilizer Tips For Idaho Homeowners

If you dont do everything right when fertilizing your lawn, you might be wasting fertilizer and your time. Here are some lawn fertilization tips:

• Water first. A few days before you feed your lawn, give it a good watering. That will help ensure your soil is ready to accept the fertilizer.

• Adjust your spreader settings. Check the fertilizer bag to make sure youre selecting the proper setting for your individual spreader to ensure proper coverage.

• Lightly water after you apply fertilizer. That washes the fertilizer off grass blades and into the soil. You can also time fertilizer application between rainfalls to let rain wash fertilizer into soil. Just dont fertilize before a downpour all that fertilizer will just wash away.

Your Last Two Fertilizer Applications Should Take Place In The Fall

It is best to plan for two fertilizer applications between late August and November. If you’re wondering the best time to fertilize, remember it’s just as important to know when not to do it.

In the Florida panhandle, grasses tend to be more dormant in the winter months. During winter, the grass isnt as able to take in the needed nutrients, so it make sense to avoid applying fertilizers at this time.

Hold off on fertilizing if your area is expecting heavy rains of two or more inches, or a tropical storm is expected in the next 24 hours. You want to make sure the fertilizer has a chance to get into the soil and root systems, not get washed away.

Also, if you just planted new turfgrass, the University of Florida Extension recommends waiting 30 to 60 days before using nitrogen fertilizer. The young roots arent deep enough to really absorb the nutrients, and the soil from the sod farm may already have nutrients in place.

Can I Over Fertilize My Lawn

You know that its not a good thing when you see it. Fertilizers that are too high in nitrogen and too low in phosphorous can cause your lawn to turn brown and die. This is especially true if the fertilizer is applied too late in the growing season, or if it is not applied at the right time of the year.

Too much fertilizer can also damage the roots of your grass, making it more susceptible to disease and disease-causing insects. In addition, excessive fertilizers can lead to the growth of weeds, which can be a serious problem if you dont know what youre doing.
