This is a frequently debated subject and passions run high on either side of the argument.

Its green color matches many lawn grasses and it maintains that color even during the hottest days of summer when some grasses struggle and begin to fade. It is able to withstand dog urine, something that will kill virtually all desirable grasses. It can grow nearly anywhere outside of dense shade and requires little maintenance it rarely gets tall enough to mow, it can survive with very little water, and it actually prefers soils that arent fertilized.
However, clover also has certain downsides. It struggles under even moderate amounts of traffic. It will not survive in yards that are frequent playgrounds for kids and pets or home to sports played by adults. When it is played on it tends to stain clothing easily and its stains can be difficult to remove.
Ultimately it is best to go in one direction or the other. Either grow a microclover dominated lawn microclovers being a superior subtype of common white clover or grow one dominated by grass.

Lesser Trefoil & Black Medic
Lesser Trefoil or Trifolium dubium is also known as Yellow Suckling Clover. It is often mistaken for Black Medick or Medicago lupulina.
They both have leaves which consist of three leaflets which grow on short stalks, unlike White or Red Clover on which there are no stalks.
However, the leaves on Lesser Trefoil have smooth edges as opposed to Black Medic which has slightly jagged edges.
There isnt much difference between the flowers either as theyre both yellow and are very similar in shape. Oftentimes, the only way you can tell them apart just by looking at the flowers is at the end of the season. The flowers on Lesser Trefoil turn brown whereas, on Black Medick, they turn black.
They also flower at slightly different times. Lesser Trefoil generally flowers between May and October, Black Medic blooms between April and August.

Best Post Emergent Herbicides
Post-emergent herbicides are the best way to kill clover. Just keep in mind they require a little patience since it could take a couple weeks for the clover to die back.
My 3 go to products for killing clover are:
1.Ortho Weed B Gone Plus Crabgrass Control This is a great product to have on hand because of how easy it is to use. It comes with a battery operated wand so theres no need for a tank sprayer. Its the go to post emergent in my 3 product lawn care plan. It kills clover and other broad leaf weeds as well as some undesirable grasses such as crabgrass.
2.Ortho Weed B Gone Chickweed, Clover, Oxalis Kiler This is another Weed B Gone product that has different active ingredients which are more specific in targeting clover. If clover is your main problem and you dont have many other broad leaf weeds then this product is a great choice. It is sold as a concentrate so will require mixing with a tank sprayer.
3.Tenacity Tenacity is a concentrate that works a little differently then the other post-emergents. Rather then poisoning the plant, it works by blocking photosynthesis. With Tenacity, it might take 7-10 days before you begin to see whitening of the plant. Eventually it will look like your treated weeds are bleached.
Also note that you might see some temporary whitening of the desirable grasses but they will ultimately green back up.
