When To Mow The Lawn

How early is too early to MOW YOUR LAWN in the morning and weekends

The lawn care and mowing calendar is not the same in Aberdeen as it is in York and its different again in Brighton.

Im used to the climate in Yorkshire so here is the Lawnsmith Yorkshire Mowing Calendar. If you are in Aberdeen youll be running a week or two behind in the spring and a week or two ahead in autumn. The reverse will be true for those basking in Brighton!

Growth will be starting in spring so start your lawn mowing with a high cut on preferably dry grass if possible.

Sometime this month as temperature and growth increases frequency will increase with 2weeks then 10 days then perhaps down to weekly mowing.

May & June Mow frequently during this time weekly if possible. You can also lower the cutting height but I wouldnt go below about 4cm unless youre wanting more work than necessary.

  • If dry, growth will slow but do mow at least every two weeks
  • If hot and dry: as above but raise the mowing height
  • If moisture levels are good mow as for May & June

The autumn rains make the end of August and September a good growing time so mow frequently. You can also lower the cut if you raised it for the summer but if your lawn is prone to moss you want to be raising the mowing height not lowering it.

Mowing will all but finish so raise the cut to winter height.

More than likely the last regular cut of the year. If you have a rotary mower use it on a dry lawn to suck up autumn leaves.

The rules vary in this segment, but there are some generally accepted guidelines. This also depends on the neighborhood youre in, and your neighbors! If its a reel lawn mower, you can start whenever, but if its a gas-powered lawn mower or one that runs on electricity, you might want to wait a bit.

The Lawnmower Debate: How Early Is Too Early

Herald readers speak out on when and when not to mow your lawns.

Many, if not all, can relate to being kept awake by loud music, screaming children, dogs or power tools, but the question of how late is too late or what time the rooster should crow is one that divides many Kiwis.

The article ‘When it’s not okay to mow your lawns’ published by the Herald this morning has roused many a response from readers who have taken to social media to voice their opinions.

The article addressed a Tweet by The Hits presenter Brodie Kane who earlier this week posted that she was bothered by her eager neighbour mowing their lawn on a Sunday evening.

Taking to Twitter, Kane wrote: “It’s 8.49pm on a Sunday evening. A neighbour is mowing the lawn. I can’t even.”

Twitter users were quick to sympathise, while Herald readers had much more to say on the topic.

Those on the sympathetic side of the fence agreed with Kane, saying early morning and late-night lawn mowing was “rude and inconsiderate”, “frustrating” and “disrespectful”.

“As long as it’s after midday as us night shifters need sleep too,” one commenter said.

Another went as far as to say the action had driven her to murderous intentions.

“I worked nights, 10hr shifts Monday to Thursday, for years and the neighbour mowed his lawn 8am every Friday. After 4 long nights it was not pleasant to want to murder the neighbour on the first day off,” she said.

When To Mow New Sod

How Early Can You Mow Your Lawn? Considerations and ...

Its a question many homeowners keep asking themselves, How long can I wait before mowing my newly sodded lawn?

Depending on the type of sod you are using in addition to when you plant it, it is recommended that you wait for at least 7 days and up to 14 after the installation of new sod before mowing. This will give your sod time to establish its roots in the soil for further growth. Mowing immediately after sodding is not good, as the sods root system is usually still narrow at this point to facilitate any new growth.

The best time to mow your sodded lawn is once the root system is established. You can determine this by pulling out and feeling a section of the sod for any signs of resistance. If there is, then its time to bring out your lawnmower!

When Is The Perfect Time To Cut The Grass

Do you know theres a proper time to cut the grass? When it comes to lawn mowing, we all have different opinions or suggestions depending on the region we live in. Some homeowner will base on cutting their grass when the sun is not at its highest. As mentioned earlier, we all have different opinions. So, use this information as a guide or suggestion and have fun while mowing the lawn.

  • Mid-morning from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. The optimal time to start your lawnmower.
  • Late-afternoon from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The next best time for lawn mowing.

Mid-morning lawn mowing

During the mid-morning hours, the grass has dried out its dew while the sun has not yet reached its peak. This is why mid-morning is considered a desirable time to mow the lawn since the grass is no longer wet and thick. When the grass is wet, it can clump up forming into wet lumps while the trimming is inconsistent.

Late-afternoon grass cutting

Late afternoons temperature starts to cool down which means less stress on your grass. Although its considered a perfect time, there will be not enough time for the grass to recuperate to cope with the next days heat and sun.

But before you go hit that power button, theres one more important detail to keep in mind. While some people wait for the sun to go down to mow the lawn, you have to know that we have a noise restriction law. Moreover, for as long as you mow the lawn within the scheduled times, theres no need to worry about being fined with $1000.

Spring Lawn Care Tips – When To Start Fertilizing and Mowing Your Lawn In The Spring

Never mow your lawn in the middle or late afternoon.

This is the worst time to mow because your grass is significantly deprived of moisture and is prone to becoming dried out and brown if it is cut.

Do not water your lawn in this case, either.

The water droplets on the blades of grass will magnify the suns rays and cause burns.

It is also very dangerous for you to mow the lawn during the hottest mid-afternoon temperatures due to the possibility of heatstroke.

If you feel overheated at any time while mowing your grass, immediately stop.

Go to a cooler area and drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated.

Heatstroke is a hazardous situation, and severe instances will cause hospitalization and even death.

Wear light-colored, loose clothing, stay hydrated, and take plenty of breaks if you have to be outdoors in high temperatures.

Days 1 Through : Water Water Water

The seeds need plenty of water to thrive much more than normally needed throughout the year. This might be once or twice a day, depending on the weather. Make sure you thoroughly water all of the overseeded areas, keeping the top 1/4 inch of soil moist. You can resume your normal watering schedule of longer, less frequent waterings after these first few days.

Choose Your Tool Wisely

It’s important to remember that no two lawns or gardens are the same even if they are side by side. Take into consideration the condition and size of your lawn, and your gardening needs when choosing the best tool for the job. Choose an electric lawnmower over a petrol one for the more eco-friendly option.

What Is The Best Time To Mow Your Lawn

Now that you understand what the law says in your area and what time you are allowed to begin cutting grass, its probably a good time to let you know that an early morning start is a bad idea. Mowing in the early morning is harmful to the grass.

There are several problems with choosing to start this early.

First, obviously, is that you might violate the ordinances we mentioned earlier if you begin right at 6 a.m.

The second issue is that it is actually the worst possible time to cut your grass if you want to keep it healthy.

This early in the day, plants are still wet with dew. The dew will make cutting grass less efficient than if it were dry. It may also make your lawn more susceptible to disease.

So, avoid this early time of the day and prevent having to deal with unhappy neighbors and an unhealthy lawn.

The best time to mow your grass is mid-morning. This means the time between 8 and 10 a.m. By this time of day, you shouldnt have to worry about offending your neighbors.

Also, the sun has dried all the dew. But the heat of the day hasnt yet begun. So your lawn can heal before the heat of the afternoon that can put stress on your lawn.

Trimming your yard between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. is a very bad idea. The heat of the day is already hard enough on the grass without you mowing it. If you cut the grass now, you will draw moisture from the blades, which will cause heat damage.

Leave the mower in the shed in the middle of the day.

Different Mowing Heights For Different Grasses

How Early Can You Mow Your Lawn? Considerations and ...

With the factors varying in length and quantity for every turfgrass species, different turf grasses have different recommended mowing heights.

Kentucky bluegrass and fine fescues, for instance, cannot produce sufficient leaf mass when cut at very low heights, hence should be mowed at about 1.5 to 2 inches while theyre still new sod, which is relatively high.

On the other hand, bunch-type sods like Tall fescues and ryegrass produce just enough leaf mass to allow mowing heights of 2 to 3 inches of new sod.

Finding the correct mowing height will help your lawn grow thicker and fuller, preventing bare spots and weed competition.

Dont Bag Your Grass Mulch As You Mow

In past decades, homeowners bagged up clippings and threw them away.

However, today, plant experts now recommend leaving the clippings on the grass to act as a mulch to help retain moisture in the soil and add nutrients as the clippings decompose.

Grass clippings can generate up to 30% of your lawns nitrogen needs. Leaving the clipping on the grass makes less work for you and provides better growing conditions for your lawn.

As long as you are cutting your lawn with the one-third rule, the clippings should be small enough to rapidly decompose.

If youre worried about thatch buildup, make sure you discharge your grass on the side you havent mowed yet so you can cut the pieces even smaller when you mow over them again.

Or consider a mulching mower or adding a mulching attachment to your current mower, designed to cut the pieces even smaller than regular mowers.

When To Fertilize And Water Your Lawn

If you fertilize twice a year, in the spring apply just enough lawn fertilizer to help green up your grass. A third application can be added in mid to late spring, combined with your crabgrass preventer. If you fertilize one a year, for most regions the best time is around Labor Day.

Watering your lawn properly is crucial for a lush look and feel. How much water to use and how often you should be watering your lawn depends on your soil moisture, region, grass type and other factors. Generally, grass should be watered early in the morning. Watering during the hottest times of the day allows too much water to evaporate, limiting hydration. And watering at night encourages the growth of harmful fungi.

When To Start Mowing The Lawn Again After The Winter Season

In addition to choosing the right time of day to mow your lawn, it is also important to understand when to start mowing again after a dormant winter season.

If you start cutting your grass too early, you will have many issues during the growing season. Mowing dormant grass is a surefire way to end up with bare patches of lawn in the spring.

Wait to start mowing your grass until the temperatures outside are consistently above 40° degrees Fahrenheit and there is no longer a chance of frost.

In most areas, the second week of April is a good time to mow, but be aware of any chances of a late frost.

Cutting grass before it has a chance to completely thaw will damage the blades because they will be more fragile.

Never cut more than one-third of the length of your grass at once.

If rain has delayed you from mowing the lawn and your grass is tall, mow more frequently and gradually lower the blade on your mower until your lawn is the preferred height.

Mowing The Lawn In The Evening

As mowing your lawn early in the morning is bad for the health of your grass, you also do not want to mow too late in the day.

Grass needs sunlight during the day to recover from being cut.

This recovery period ensures the grass grows strong and healthy.

Cutting the lawn after the sun has gone down deprives the grass of vital nutrients.

Without these nutrients, the grass will become discolored, and your yard may have a patchy look.

It is more difficult to see after dark and harder to cut your grass evenly as a result.

Mold and fungus spores also take root at night.

If your grass does not have time to heal properly, it will be more prone to being infected with these spores.

If you must mow your lawn in the evening, aim to do it between 4 pm-6 pm.

This will give your grass some time to recover before the sun goes down.

Mowing your lawn any later than this may also disturb your neighbors.

When Can I Mow My Overseeded Lawn

I aerated and topdressed with compost, then overseeded with KBF/fescue/rye about 10 days ago. Some of the rye/fescue is already coming up but not the KBG. The existing lawn is already getting on the long side. Can I gently mow it with my push mower? If I dont the tall grass will probbaly shade the seedlings – plus look terrible. I am in Syracuse NY.

I mow mine after about 2.5 weeks if it’s had plenty of sun…and watering intervals. If you’re still having nice warm days and you’re watering every day also , watch to be sure your grass doesn’t pick up a fungal condition. Very easy to contract now.

One of the problems I’ve had with letting the seedlings grow long and trying to wait for a complete germination is if you get caught with a .5-1″ rainstorm, and that deluge starts flowing across areas of the new grass, it’s going to mat the new seedlings down…and brother you will not get them back up again . I’ve tried several times and wound up having to reseed those areas that got washed across. So now I’ll mow a little earlier if need be to prevent that situation.
