Importance Of Ph Balance In Your Lawn

How To Tell If Your Lawn Needs Lime [7 Ways]

Sounds like soil science is pretty complicated hey? Well it is, however, we will keep our guide to a basic understanding, so you as a homeowner will be able to fully understand and take away some basics and start using them on your lawn. In science, pH stands for power of hydrogen, pH below 7 are considered acidic and pH above 7 are alkaline. If you recall back in your junior high science lab, there were litmus tests conducted to see if a solution was basic or acidic. Soil is generally on the neutral side, ranging from 5.5 to 7.0 on the pH scale.

Typically, out east in Ontario, the soil is more acidic, and they require lime every season to lower the pH level. Out west, its the opposite, the soil here is far more basic and requires soil conditioners to lower the pH to a neutral state. The ideal pH for best results is between 6.2 and 6.5, you can find your pH by doing a soil test.

Contact us today if you would like a soil test conducted. After the soil test is conducted, if the pH is above the 6.5 mark, we have many soil conditioners and services that will help alleviate this issue. The main factor that contribute to soil acidity is rainfall, when the water mixes with carbon dioxide it forms a weak acid that will lower the pH.

Legislature Looks At Local Ordinances

When Sarasota County began to consider limiting nitrogen use during the summer rainy season in 2007, detractors said it would put people out of jobs, kill lawns and destroy the countys market for high-end homes. I made a commitment, right up front, that if it didnt work, wed go back in and fix it, recalls Jon Thaxton, the commissioner who led the effort that ultimately resulted in a unanimous vote by the commission.

Four years later, lawns are as lush and verdant as ever and the furor has pretty much died down at least in Sarasota County. As Bay Soundings goes to press in early April, state legislators are considering a bill that would restrict the right of counties to pass fertilizer ordinances stronger than the states model ordinance. Its a draconian one-size-fits-all measure that sends mixed messages, says Thaxton. They tell us its our job to clean our waters but then take away one of the best tools we have.

Fertilizer ordinances are not a silver bullet that removes all nitrogen, but they are one of the least expensive options for counties faced with meeting stringent new regulations at both the state and national level, Thaxton said.

Even discounting the dollar savings, most people do not want to cause pollution that leads to dead fish on beaches or lakes covered in algae, adds Latvala. People want to do the right thing, most of them just dont know how harmful fertilizer can be if its used incorrectly.

Ask how long a lawn care provider has been in business. What level of experience and education does the person or a providers staff have? Also, is the provider properly licensed and insured?

Unfortunately, some providers are fly-by-night operators that havent been in business very long and are interested only in taking your money, not in providing top-notch service. As noted by MarketWatch, providing lawn care requires little more than some equipment and a business license. Almost no training is required.

    Additional Considerations And Costs

    • Many landscapers offer discounts if you sign up for regular services. This includes having your lawn fertilized up to 10 times a year at roughly $35 – $40 a visit. Other annual packages are available as well.
    • While it is possible to apply your own fertilizer for less money, using a professional service means that you also gain their expertise. They know which fertilizers will work best for your lawn and determine when it is safe to use your lawn after applying certain synthetic fertilizers.
    • Always read the label and follow instructions carefully when using fertilizers. Proper application keeps your children and pets safe and prevents lawn damage.
    • Fertilizing helps your grass grow thicker with stronger roots, which may reduce weeds. It also helps prevent soil erosion and mud buildup.
    • Using the wrong fertilizer type on your lawn can burn the grass and leave it looking worse than before. The fertilizer must be spread properly to ensure even distribution and at the correct time in the growth cycle.
    • It is important that the grass is not too wet or the ground too dry when applying fertilizer to ensure that the right amount of the nutrients reach the grass and prevent denitrification or burning of the plants.

How Often Should You Fertilize The Lawn

How Much Fertilizer Do I Put On The Lawn

Although fertilizers are an integral component of making your lawn healthy and lush, it doesnt mean that you should dump tons of it on your property.

A good rule, according to most landscaping experts, is to have the lawn fertilized once every five weeks. Its also recommended to begin applying fertilizer in late March or the first weeks of April. This is normally the time of year when the grass comes out of dormancy so it will need a lot of nutrients to grow.

However, you may also want to apply some weed prevention products at the same time as part of your normal lawn maintenance routine.

Just like grass, weed needs nutrients to grow as well and the more fertilizer you apply, the higher the chances that you will be feeding off the weeds in the process. Applying a weed prevention product ensures that all the fertilizer nutrients go directly to the grass.

See the figure below to see the twelve different types of soils. Knowing the type of texture will help us know what soil is best used to grow a healthy lawn. While the professionals use a hydrometer to measure soil structure. For us homeowners, there are some DIY ways of accurately predicting your soil structure. Here are the three best tips to help determine the soil structure of your lawn:

    1. Watch what happens after a heavy rainfall!

Does the water drain internally through your lawn and there is hardly any water on the surface of the turf? Then you have a sandy soil and not much clay content. If the water rests on the surface of the lawn, then the soil has a lot of clay content.

The study done by Thriving Yard states that for any puddles of water that form on your lawn , the best solution is to aerate and to follow is concept of deep soil integration that he mentions.

Can I Perform Tree And Shrub Fertilizing Services On My Own

The next question that you might be asking is whether you can perform DIY tree and shrub fertilization. After all, you might have seen that they sell tree fertilizer options on shelves at the local big box store .The biggest problem with these DIY options is effectiveness. Most tree and shrub fertilizer spikes sold on the shelf to consumers are not going to get the nutrients deep enough into the soil to be effective. They also tend to concentrate the nutrients to a few small areas instead of reaching the root system as a whole. In order to get the most benefit from fertilizing trees and shrubs, you want the nutrients to reach the roots and be dispersed throughout the entire plant. Its also worth noting that the tree and shrub fertilization products sold at big box stores are not going to be comparable to the high-quality, professional-grade product that a pro will have access to. This is important as better products mean better results.
