Not Watering Long Enough

Professional Watering Guidelines for Utah Lawns

This goes hand in hand with not watering every day. If you do water every day but only for 15 mins each day, you may think spacing it out will get a consistent amount of water to your grass. Youre wrong. You should be watering less frequently. But you should be watering deeply. Look at that thermometer again. If you are looking at 70-80 degrees you want to get about a half an inch of water onto your lawn. Usually, that means about 15- 20 mins per station with pop up spray heads, and 30-40 mins per station for far shooting rotating pop up sprinklers. If the temp outside is 90-100+ youre looking to get 1/2 3/4. Try 25-35 mins per station with pop up spray heads and 40-60 mins per station for far shooting rotating pop up sprinklers. Your watering time may vary so make sure you are doing some research on how long you need to water to get the appropriate amount of water on your lawn.

When Should Sprinklers Be Turned Off

You should shut off your irrigation system just before temperatures in your region begin to dip below freezing at night. Dont shut off your irrigation system too early. Often homeowners shut their systems down as soon as the fall season arrives because they believe that their lawn requires less water.

Now Is Not The Time To Water The Lawn State Urges

As Gov. Spencer Cox enacts water usage restrictions on state buildings, the Division of Water Resources is urging Utahns to do the same with their own homes and lawns as the state faces extreme drought conditions.

Watering the front lawn may account for just 6 percent of the entire states water usage which could be looked at as negligible but the Division of Water Resources explained that its actually a huge percentage of the municipal water supply.

In the first yard work session of the season, theres usually a lot to get done. For Sean Black in West Valley City, that meant weed whacking and lawn mowing Monday evening.

His kids joined in the fun, using the blower to clear away debris and pulling up weeds.

However, there is one thing you wont see Black tackling just yet his sprinkler system. Some of his neighbors, hes noticed, have already gotten a head start on that.

It drives me a little crazy, he said, of people watering their already green lawns. If you look at my lawn, we dont need it right now.

Black said hes been paying attention to the states drought and following lawn watering recommendations.

Im from St. George, and I can see how bad its getting, Black said. Just from the lakes that weve been going to and the stories weve seen how low the water level is, for the shortage that we had in the snow. I know its going to be a tough year.

Residential indoor uses the remaining 4 percent.

To avoid this evaporation, water your lawn in the early morning. In other words, dont let the sun scare you from watering your lawn when its at its thirstiest.

Plus, this kind of heat is going to show all of the imperfections in your soil and your sprinkler system. But dont worry about it. Rather than re-working or your sprinklers in order to fight the extra heat, or trying to water too much, it might be better to hand water the areas you care about and wait for the weather to cool down. Your lawn will likely come back just fine when the temperatures drop again in the early fall.

General Rules For Watering Lawns In Utah

  • Longer watering time is required if you are using heads of rotary nozzle style as they shoot over a longer distance compared to pop-up fan spray heads. Rotary nozzle heads also tend to be affected more by water pressure and wind.
  • Changes in water pressure and wind change throughout the day. It can have a serious effect on the water coverage. The lowest water pressure and windiest time often occurs in the morning.
  • Since more people water during hotter months, it means that there is less water pressure. This is why it is best to supplement with hand watering.
  • During mid and spring season, it is important to clean your sprinkler systems filters that include those with individual heads.
  • Compacted and hard soil doesnt allow water penetration. Compaction is often not uniformed, with water running off compacted areas and soaking into more porous soil. It will result to dead spots as well as overwatered grass adjacent to one another.

Watering Your Lawn In Utah Under Weather Conditions Of 90 To More Than 100 Degrees

How Often Should You Water Your Lawn
  • Water your lawn 3 to 4 times a week.
  • Watering time should be set to achieve ½ to ¾ inch of water for each station every day.
  • Rotary style systems have an average of 40 to more than 60 minutes for each station and your watering time can vary significantly.
  • For spray heads of fan and pop-up style, the average time of watering is 25 to 35 minutes for every station with varying watering time.

During such weather conditions, there might be a need for you to hand water certain areas since your automated sprinkler system wont be able to uniformly cover every area under this heat. Increasing your watering time will only make you drastically overwater certain areas and you might still end up dealing with several dry dead spots.

The Ideal Time To Water Your Lawn

The best time to water your lawn is in the morning, preferably before 10 AM. If you do it during the heat of the day, its more likely that the water will evaporate before it can sink into the soil. This will encourage shallow roots theyll need to be near the surface to get any moisture. That means that when the heat of summer really comes on, your grass will turn brown and die.

Although it might be tempting, avoid watering at night. This could cause the grass to stay damp too long. A damp lawn encourages bacteria and fungus to grow that might damage or even kill your grass.

Likewise, a rain gauge will tell how much water the yard is receiving from rain and may even help you save on your water bill!

How Often To Water Your Lawn

Watering grass daily will result in a shallow root system. And shallow root systems dry out fast, weakening lawns. Infrequent, deep watering encourages grass roots to run deep, developing strong systems below-ground. This allows lawns to be more resilient to changing weather while becoming hardier and disease resistant.

The average lawn needs to be watered three times per week during warm months, providing a total of about one inch of water over the course of the week. Lawns can be watered as little as one to two times per week to achieve the same goal in cooler seasons, when there is naturally less evaporation and a higher chance of rainfall.

The department says watering now can actually do more harm than good to residential lawns. Homeowners are urged to let their turf build up strong roots before the summer, and watering now could lead to shallow and weak roots.

A state of emergency declaration will allow for state and federal resources to be used to help farms and communities that might be impacted by what is expected to be a long, hot summer.

Depending on where you live, you may not need to water your lawn during the spring. The soil beneath the grass is often saturated with water from snowmelt, and spring rain will provide even more water.

Start with watering once a week for about twenty minutes at a time, applying roughly half an inch of water to the grass. As temperatures exceed 80 degrees, you may need to start watering every three days for thirty to forty minutes at a time, or one to two inches of water each time.

The most common turf species in Utah and the broader Intermountain West is Kentucky Bluegrass, which needs about two inches of water per week in the summer.
