Applying a fertilizer every two weeks isnt recommended as this will likely lead to problems such as lawn burn, excessive grass growth, and pollution to waterways.
A natural way of feeding your lawn every two weeks would be to leave the grass clippings on the lawn surface when mowing your grass. The grass clippings contain low nutrient levels that will slowly be absorbed by the soil as they naturally decompose and get eaten by earthworms. These wont burn the lawn or cause excessive growth. You might have to scarify your lawn more often due to this additional organic material being present, however, its recommended that you should do this every late summer or early fall/autumn anyway.
Most synthetic fertilizers are not recommended to be applied every 2 weeks, due to their night nutrient content.

How Often Should I Fertilize My Lawn
Adding fertilizer to your lawn is one of the main ways to ensure that your grass is as healthy as possible. Throughout each growing season, your grass will slowly deplete its nutrient levels and these should be replenished manually. The trick in performing this task is to know how often you should fertilize your lawn.
Knowing how regularly to apply fertilizer to your lawn depends on the time of year. During late spring and early summer, your lawn will need to fertilize your lawn more frequently than during the late summer and early fall/autumn. This is because your lawn is more active during the spring and early summer and will be able to withstand more frequent applications of feed.
The rate of grass growth will slow during the late summer and early fall/autumn so, therefore, the lawn will require fewer nutrients.

What Do You Do If You Burn Your Lawn With Fertilizer
If youve overdone it with the fertilizer, you may still be able to save your lawn. Burned lawns will need a generous amount of water to get back to green. Its vital that you water the lawn as soon as you spot any brown or yellow patches to prevent further damage. Slowly soak the affected areas every day for about a week to fully flush out the extra salt. To avoid causing sun damage while the lawn is in crisis, be sure to water early in the morning. Within a few weeks, the affected areas should be turning back to green. If not, those areas of your lawn may need to be dug up and overseeded to inspire new growth.
When To Apply Weed & Feed
Its important to apply weed & feed when weeds are actively growing. Applying weed & feed during the winter will have absolutely no effect on the lawn in the following spring and summer. You should spread weed & feed on damp/wet grass so that the granules stick better to the leafy portions of the weeds.
You should also pick a time when no additional rain is expected for two days, and you should avoid watering your lawn over this period. This allows time for the herbicide to absorb into the leaves. If it does rain or the lawn gets drenched, it will wash the granules off the leaves. In this case, however, you cannot re-apply the chemical immediately because you will over-feed the lawn and potentially cause a chemical scorch.

Problems With Using Weed And Feed
It can be tricky to get the timing right when you want to use weed and feed on your lawn. The grass might not benefit from a fertilizer at the time when the herbicide must be applied. In early spring, the right time to apply a pre-emergent herbicide, a dose of fertilizer encourages lush, green growth, but the grass benefits more from root development to help it grow well over the coming summer. Similarly, post-emergent herbicides are most effective if applied in late fall when broadleaf weeds are storing nutrients in their roots, yet a better time to apply fertilizer would be early or late summer.

How To Fertilise A Lawn
You can fertilise a lawn by hand, but it can be a difficult process as it is hard to tell whether you have put the right amount down. It is generally advisable to use a spreader as most lawn care professionals do because they can help you to spread your fertiliser evenly over the surface and give better results. There are several different types of spreader that you can use. Shoulder or handheld spreaders are good for gardens that are not a standard rectangle shape and are very easy to use. You can also use mechanical push-along spreaders. These spreaders are better for large gardens where you have a lot of fertiliser to spread. Rotary spreaders have a spinning mechanism that throws or sprays the fertiliser while drop fertilisers have small holes in the underside out of which the feed drops onto the grass. Ideally you should feed your lawn as soon after mowing as possible as this will give the grass more time to absorb the nutrients before the next mow. If you mow your lawn after fertilising you may remove the fertiliser before it has a chance to sink in properly.
Winter Lawn Care Advice: November
You may still need to mow your lawn during November, if this is the case ensure your mower is set to one of its highest cutting settings. As the winter is almost up on us, now is a good time to give your mower blade a good clean or to give the whole mower a service before putting it to bed until the spring. Continue to remove any fallen leaves from the lawn to reduce the risk of disease. If any early frosts fall remember not to walk on the lawn to reduce the risk of damaging it. When To Fertilize Cool
Fertilize cool-season grasses in early fall. The fall feeding is responsible for a quick green-up in spring. For most regions where cool-season grasses grow, apply fertilizer in October or November. Not Feeding Regularly Enough

The most common reason is that many people who own lawns, either arent interested in spending the time to care for them or dont have the time to dedicate to it.
Either way, underfeeding creates a deficiency in nutrients. Mainly in Nitrogen, Phosphate and Potassium all of which aid in leaf growth and root development.
When a lawn lacks these nutrients, the grass cant function as it should. Leaf growth slows right down and the roots become weak.
This means the grass cant repair itself when you mow, especially if you mow too short and it becomes more susceptible to disease.
Over time youll notice your lawn become thinner and more sparse. You might even see parts of the lawn turning yellow or brown and in the worst cases, the grass could die off altogether. This creates room for weeds and moss to invade.

How Long To Stay Off Lawn After Weed And Feed
You should be good to use your lawn again after 24-72 hours. This give the fertilizer time to work its way into the soil. See the paragraphs below for when to water after application.

You should also not carry out aerating after weed & feed application, as it can possibly damage any new emerging grass seedlings.
Safety Considerations & Pets
Like every lawn chemical, standard precautions should be followed before applying weed and feed or any herbicide to your lawn. These safety instructions are NO substitute for manufacturers guidelines. Be sure to read the safety instructions on the bag and follow them.
- Wear long pants and long sleeves and gloves during application. Herbicides like Dicamba, 2,4-D, and MCPP can cause serious skin irritation.
- Avoid contact with eyes. If you get the dust of the product in your eyes, flush them for 15 minutes with water.
- Never ingest the product, leave the product where a child could ingest it, or leave it open for pets. Weed and feed chemicals can be harmful or fatal if swallowed. If swallowed, you should call 911 or a poison control center immediately.
- Keep pets and children off the lawn until after the first drenching rain after application. Visually inspect the lawn to ensure the granules are completely dissolved.

Nutrition For New Grass
Whether its seeded, sodded, or sprigged over a whole lawn or a small bare spot, new grass benefits from extra nutrients. For good quality soil, adding an inch or two of compost might be all you need to do.
If your soil is less than ideal, apply starter fertilizer. This fertilizer is specially formulated for new lawns and contains higher levels of nutrients, phosphorous in particular, to help seeds sprout and seedlings grow strong, deep roots. Many also contain quick-release nitrogen to promote seed germination.
Before planting, apply the fertilizer with a lawn spreader, but dont rake it in. The fertilizer should go no deeper than 4 inches to prevent damage to the grass roots. Wait until after the third mowing to fertilize again.
How Do I Know How Often To Fertilize Lawns
If you fertilize too little you wont feed your lawn with the nutrients it needs, and it may turn brittle and yellow. Apply too much fertilizer too early or late, and you can burn the blades.
Most lawns will do fine with fertilizing one or two times a year, in the early spring and the fall, but this depends on the type of lawn you have. Some people do it four times per year. In this case, we recommend keeping in mind the big holidays to do it: around Easter, Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Halloween.
Depending on your lawn, you can fertilize up to once every four or five weeks if using synthetic fertilizers. If you have a slow-release organic fertilizer, you can space out the applications for eight to 10 weeks.
Avoid fertilizing in the peak temperatures of the summer. The heat and blazing sun together with the fertilizers can damage your grass.

How Often Do You Have To Wait Between Fertilizer Applications
Fertilizers with a higher nutrient content will mean that you need to wait longer between applications in comparison to lawn fertilizer with a lower nutrient content. Some fertilizers can be applied once every four weeks whereas some you will need to wait as long as twelve weeks before you feed your lawn.
Knowing how long you will need to wait between applications will differ between the specific lawn fertilizer you have purchased.
A good tip to ensure that you dont over-fertilize your lawn is to make a note on a calendar the date you applied the lawn food. Read the instructions on your chosen fertilizer to see when the manufacturer recommends reapplying the feed. Then workout when the feed should be reapplied and add this date to your calendar.
Alternatively, set a reminder on your smartphone to prevent over-feeding.

Should I Mow Before Applying Weed And Feed
The question is, do you have to cut your grass before applying the weed & feed? If youve been following our blog for a while, you know that the answer is always it depends.
It depends on the type of weeds youre trying to get rid of, the species of grass you have, the phase of the season when youre applying herbicide, how the herbicide works, and, of course, how you mow.
If you have large broad leafed weeds, and are using a post-emergent product, then its best not to mow too short before putting down weed and feed, better to have a larger leaf area for the product to work on.
If you are going to be using a pre-emergent product, you can cut the grass not less than 2 days before application, then water it in, as it needs to get under the surface to start working.
So, the general rule is only mow at least 2 days before you apply weed & feed products, and dont mow before 2 days after the weed and feed application.
