How To Get Rid Of White Clover Without Destroying The Lawn

How to Kill Clover in the Lawn (Easy Weed Control)

To get rid of white clover in your lawn you can try 2 methods.

  • To pull out the weed manually by hand
  • To apply a selective herbicide to your lawn which only kills white clover weed in your lawn and doesnt harm the grass.

Lets discuss how to do these properly in detail:

1.Pull it out

The best way to get rid of a small amount of clover weed in your lawn is to pull it out by hand. First water your lawn to make the soil moist so that you can remove the weed very easily without leaving any roots in the soil. This will ensure that you have eliminated all the weed and it will not come back.

2.Apply herbicide

The second way to remove clover from your lawn is to apply selective herbicide which only kills clover weed and doesnt affect your grass. Apply herbicide when the soil is moist and do a little watering after the application of the herbicide to wash away all the herbicide from the leaves of the grass so it doesnt get burned.

Mix And Spray Herbicide

To create an herbicide mix, begin by adding half the water called for on the herbicides label to the sprayer. Then add the specified amount of herbicide and mix with a manual or drill-attached paint mixer or by simply shaking the sprayer. Then add a surfactant, if needed of the recommended herbicides in this post, only the Hi-Yield Triclopyr would benefit from one and mix again. Finally add a a helpful addition that reminds you what clover you have sprayed and what you havent and the remaining water and mix a final time.

The lawn can either be sprayed in its entirety a technique called broadcast spraying or specific patches of weeds can be targeted a technique called spot-spraying. Spot spraying is the better and more responsible choice in most situations broadcast spraying should be limited to enormous lawns where spot-spraying is impractical or to lawns with a massive and far-reaching infestation of weeds. Note that herbicide and water ratios may differ depending on whether one is broadcast or spot spraying always refer to the herbicides label for the correct amounts of each.

Spray A Vinegar Solution

White Clover

Create your own non-toxic weed killer with this natural home remedy.

  • Mix one cup of vinegar with a cup of water and one drop of dish soap.
  • Shake it up and spray it onto any patches of clover. The vinegar will dry out the clovers leaves, and the dish soap will make sure it sticks.
  • You may need to spray over a series of weeks to kill off the clover completely. Unfortunately, the vinegar can damage grass, so spray the solution carefully.

Check Your Pets For Clover Mites

Its not just fleas and ticks that latch onto your pets skin and fur. Many other bugs on pets can latch onto them.

And clover mites and boxelder bugs are two of them.

Clover mites can latch onto their bodies when your pet plays outdoors on the grass lawn or runs through the tall grasses.

Clover mites will move inside your home by anchoring themselves on your pet.

So, check your pets for any bugs and clover mites. Bathe them with a pet-friendly disinfectant to remove any bugs and parasites latching onto them.

Smother The Entire Lawn And Start Over Again

If you have a smaller lawn, and its completely overrun with clover, moss, and weeds, you may be tempted to start over again.

To do this, its best to avoid using herbicides to kill everything on your lawn, as this can ruin the fertility of the soil. Instead, smother your grass using a large tarpaulin, and then reseed it, or lay new sod.

You will need to wait about three weeks for everything on your lawn to die, and decompose enough to plant new grass.

How Do I Control White Clover In My Lawn

How do I control white clover in my lawn?

White clover is a creeping perennial. It is a common plant in many Iowa lawns because it is a prolific seed producer and adapts well to mowing and other lawn care practices. Its presence is often a sign of low nitrogen fertility.

White clover in lawns can be controlled through proper fertilization and the application of broadleaf herbicides. Late April/early May, mid-September, and late October/early November are excellent times to fertilize Kentucky bluegrass lawns in Iowa. Broadleaf herbicide products that contain 2,4-D, MCPP, dicamba, or triclopyr provide good control of white clover. Fall applications are more effective than late spring or summer applications.

How Do I Kill The Clover In My Lawn

The best way we find to kill clover is to look at your nitrogen levels and consider a higher nitrogen fertiliser program to effectively deal with any issues in your lawn. Specifically, a thorough spray treatment will kill off the clover roots and the nitrogen will be replenished back into the soil. Put simply, lawns love nitrogen while clover hates it, so reaching for a good quality fertiliser is a must. Broadleaf weed and clover specific sprays are also highly effective at killing off this not-so-lucky charm.

A very common way people use to try and control clover is by just mowing it down. But while mowing your lawn nice and short can keep clover under control to a certain degree, it wont prevent it from growing back and cutting the grass too short could also damage your lawn. Clover has no issues with being mowed short and will likely continue to thrive, which is not what you want. Try to maintain a turf height of 3 inches when treating your lawn for clover.

If clover is growing because of an overwatered or overfed lawn, then the solution is proper lawn care and only watering the grass when it is dry.

Control Of White Clover In A Lawn

Clover is a creeping, perennial weed. It can be very difficult to hand-weed out completely and several goes at trying to pull it out will be needed. It has a habit very similar to Creeping cinquefoil. The only way to be sure of removal would be to apply a selective lawn weed killer. White clover is very easy to control using weedkillers. It is advised that the flowers are mown off, before the weed killer is applied, to reduce the risk of any of the chemical being passed to any pollinating bees or insects.

A regular lawn treatment applied during the growing season will control white clover very easily and effectively. For more information, please dont hesitate to get in touch.

How Can I Identify White Clover

White clover is very low-growing plant and, in a lawn, it will stay below the level of mowing. Tests have shown that it will struggle to survive in longer grass as it is unable to reach light deep down in a dark sward so regular mowing will actually increase the light available to it, keeping it strong and encouraging it to spread.

White clover is very recognisable with its familiar shamrock-shaped three leaves at the end of each stem . Some plants have a white speckled crescent pattern on each leaf.

Each stem of white clover is a stolon which can produce its own roots and leaves when it touches the ground, enabling it to spread up to one meter a year. This behaviour makes it a very hard-wearing plant because if one growth node or stem is damaged, the plant can still grow vigorously from any one of the other growth points.

The main way to identify white clover from the other clovers is that it produces distinctive white flowers in the summer which sit proud of the plant, up to 20cm high. These flowers are often mowed away with your normal mowing routine, but that doesnt weaken the plant, as patches of clover have been known to stay active and continue spreading for many decades!

White Clover is easily recognisable from its smooth trifoliate leaves but once established can require patience to beat.

A hardy, herbaceous perennial plant that tolerates shade and frost, White Clover is a legume commonly grown in mixed pastures to produce fodder for livestock.

White Clover is often added to lawn seed mixes because it can develop into soft mats providing green ground cover in poorer soils where turfgrasses do not perform well. This was especially common in the 1950s and 1960s when lawn mixes often included 20 percent Clover.

Apart from being an excellent forage crop for livestock, the freshleaves and flowers of White Clover have been used for centuries in salads, brewed drinks and for medicinal purposes.

Bees love the flowers for both pollen and nectar.

It is very prevalent in under-fertilized lawns and grows best in full sun however, it can also colonize turf areas that receive fertilizer and are partially shaded. White clover produces stolons and can creep into thin turf, forming patches. It grows well in spring, summer, and fall, and is most noticeable when flowering during late spring and early summer. Although some homeowners don’t mind having clover in their lawns, others object to its patchy appearance.

Should You Mow Your Lawn When There Is Clover On The Grass

If you notice some areas of clover on your lawn, its a good idea to leave it a little longer in between mows, to give the lawn the chance to grow a bit taller. This can help to starve the clover of light, stopping it from growing.

However, you can still mow the lawn when theres clover on it. Just ensure to bag your clippings, and dispose of them in the garden rubbish. This reduces the likelihood of spreading clover all over your lawn.

Issues With Using Clover As A Grass Substitute

Miniclover® White Clover Seeds For Clover Lawns

There are a few things you should be aware of before creating a white clover lawn.

1. Clover attracts bees Honeybees are a wonderful thing to have in any garden as they pollinate the vegetables and flowers. However, when you have a white clover yard, the bees will be everywhere. If you have children or frequently go barefoot, there will be an increase in bee stings.

2. Clover does not hold up to REPEAT high traffic For the most part, white clover handles heavy foot traffic pretty well BUT, if your yard is walked or played on frequently in the same general area , a white clover yard can end up half dead and patchy. To remedy this, it is usually recommended to mix the clover in with high traffic grass.

3. Clover is not drought tolerant over large areas Many people think that a clover lawn substitute solution is best because white clover seems to survive even the harshest drought. It is only moderately drought tolerant though, when the different white clover plants are growing apart from each other. When they are grown close together, they compete for water and cannot support themselves in dry times.

If you are ok with the facts above about having a white clover lawn, you are ready to use clover as a grass substitute.

Control In Vegetable Gardens

Cultural Control: It is best to treat weeds before tilling the soil for a vegetable garden. Tilling can break up and spread weed seed and perennial weed rhizomes throughout the garden plot. Some methods used to remove weeds in the vegetable garden include hand pulling, mulching, soil solarization, fall cover crops, and post-emergent herbicides.

Hand-pulling white clover is only practical for small garden plots. If hand pulling is chosen, be sure to work when the soil is moist so that the roots can be removed easily from the soil.

Organic mulch can be used in the garden to help suppress white clover development. Before laying the mulch, apply a layer of 6 to 8 newspaper sheets to act as a weed barrier. Wet the newspaper layer to prevent weed development by blocking light to the weeds underneath and preventing their growth. Best of all, the newspaper should decompose before next spring. To prevent low oxygen levels in the root zone, keep organic mulch levels at a maximum of 3-inches deep. If triclopyr, atrazine, metsulfuron, or 2,4-D containing products are applied to lawns for weed control, do not use the clippings for mulch in vegetable gardens or around ornamentals, as plant injury or death may result. For more information on mulching the vegetable garden, see HGIC 1253, ControllingWeeds by Cultivating and Mulching. For information on fall cover crops to suppress white clover, see HGIC 1252, Cover Crops.
