Why Dont Granular Herbicides Work On Established Weeds

[How to KILL WEEDS] in Your Lawn WITHOUT KILLING the GRASS

Granular post-emergent herbicides are herbicides you apply to established weeds. Granular post emergent herbicides are commonly found in products like Weed & Feed, or other 4 step programs that fertilizer companies promote.

Under perfect conditions these products sometimes work. But perfect conditions are hard to come by.

For starters the lawn needs to be a little wet to get the granular herbicide to stick to the weed leaves. Even then, most of the herbicide ends up bouncing off the weed leaves.

If you are lucky enough to get the correct moisture for the herbicide to stick to the weeds leaves, you have to wish for some additional luck that you dont get any rain for at least 24 hours. Otherwise the herbicide will wash off the leaves and this will all be for nothing.

Also, broadcasting a post-emergent herbicide over your entire lawn is a waste. Chances are there are just some specific areas that require herbicide so I recommend spot treating those problem areas instead of putting expensive chemicals over your entire lawn.

Kill The Weeds Without Killing The Earth

It’s been said that weeds are just plants whose virtues have not yet been discovered, but if you’re tired of waiting to find out what those virtues are, you might want to use one of these homemade herbicides instead of the chemical versions.

Many common weeds can be either food, medicine, or unwanted visitors to the garden, depending on the varieties and how you view them. But if you’ve eaten all of the edible weeds, and you still need to get rid of weeds in your yard, it’s far better for you, your soil, and your local waterways to choose a more environmentally friendly herbicide than those commonly found in the home and garden center.

Strong chemical herbicides, pesticides, and fungicides can pollute our drinking water, our groundwater, and surface water. You can avoid these long-term negative effects by choosing a gentler herbicide, which won’t contribute to the larger issue of water contamination.

The most environmentally friendly way to get rid of weeds is to pull them up, dig out the roots, let them dry in the sun, and then add them to a compost or mulch pile. However, that method can also take quite a bit of time, so if you’re looking for a quicker way to effectively get rid of weeds, one of these homemade herbicides might be the way to go.

How To Kill Weeds In Your Lawn With Planning

If youre a thinker rather than a doer, then youll be happy to hear that you can simply think your weeds away! Or, so wed like to say. More realistically, you can apply planning and knowledge to make your lawn a less hospitable place for weeds.

  • Using mulch around the edges of your yard prevents weeds from growing.
  • Preparing for a healthy lawn by ensuring that you have strong, healthy grass reduces the chances of weed infestations. Some recommend using products like Root Maximizer.
  • In some cases, keeping your grass kept short can prevent weeds from seeding .
  • Keeping the pH of your lawn around 6.5 is ideal for grass but may make it difficult for weeds to grow

These tips, as well as the more manual recommendations of pulling weeds and using chemicals, will help you keep your yard weed-free for the years to come.

How Do I Eliminate The Weeds Without Destroying My Grass

The biggest challenge concerning getting rid of weeds in the grass is making sure that you kill the weeds and not the lawn. Many people dont actually believe that such a thing is possible with homemade weed killers, but even the mixtures mentioned above can be achieved with a little precision. Simply wipe the vinegar or salt concoctions on the leaves of the plants, rather than spraying and you should be fine. It might take a bit longer, though they say patience is a virtue.

Other, less invasive methods involve letting your grass grow taller while the weeds are coming up. The tall grass might do enough to block out the sunlight for the weeds. The stronger roots might even be able to choke out the weeds roots before they have a chance to do the same. Weeds are resilient little buggers though, so dont rely on your grass to do the work for you.

More invasive methods involve something called flame weeding, which involves using a long wand on the end of a propane tank to literally burn out weeds. We would not recommend doing this on grass, however, as it may cause a fire. Frankly, we wouldnt recommend this practice at all we just thought it would be neat to mention it.

Blanket Spray If Theres A Lot Of Weeds

What if you have so many weeds that spot treating isnt an option?

If you have a lot of weeds mixed in with your lawn it might seem ridiculous to go around and spray each individual weed.

Instead, youre better off blanket spraying your entire lawn. Blanket spraying usually requires a larger 4 gallon tank sprayer with a handle for pumping: 4 Gallon Tank Sprayer

You simply mix a liquid herbicide with water and walk your entire lawn while spraying. I like to go up and down in rows, usually following my mowing lines.

You can blanket spray using the same Ortho Weed B Gone product as mentioned above in the Spot Spraying section or you can use a product called Tenacity.

Tenacity, is a great herbicide for blanket spraying because it is usually a little more forgiving if you over apply. It can also be effective in controlling some grassy weeds such as Poa Annua.

Another bonus of Tenacity is if youre planning on seeding areas of your lawn or planning on a lawn renovation this is a safe product to use. Many other liquid herbicides recommend pausing applications at least a month before seeding. With Tenacity you can apply leading up to your renovation. Usually you can even treat weeds at the same time as seeding .

Just like with spot treating, mixing Surfactant into your liquid herbicide will make blank spraying more effective.

    More Natural Weed Control Methods

Dont fancy doing it by hand?

But also dont want to use a chemical weed killer in your garden?

Here are some natural methods that are easy to get started with:

    Salt

Watering weeds with a salt solution is a cheap and effective to kill weeds in your yard.

It changes the balance of water in their cells, dehydrating them and leading to death.

So why isnt it more popular?

Well, theres just one problem: it doesnt only kill weeds. And if not applied carefully it also makes the soil unsuitable for anything else to grow.

This makes it a good choice for using on patios, driveways, and sidewalks any area where plant life is unwanted.

But not such a great choice for ornamental gardens and lawns.

If you do choose to try it in areas where youre growing other plants, try using a funnel to direct the saltwater onto the target weeds.

And make sure you use a weak solution with around a 3:1 ratio of water to salt to start with. Observe your results and increase the strength if necessary, being careful not to overapply to areas of soil.

    Boiling Water

Another method is to douse the weeds in boiling water.

Needless to say, this will kill grass and everything else you pour it on. Making it okay to use on the cracks between patios and driveways. But a poor choice for using on your lawn.

Sometimes you might have to apply the water a number of times to kill particularly stubborn weeds.

Spraying white vinegar on weed leaves will cause the weeds to die off, making room in your yard for more desirable plants. The white vinegar sold in grocery stores is about 5% acetic acid, which is usually strong enough for most weeds, although a more industrial strength version is available in many garden supply stores.
