S For Seeding A New Lawn

  • Youll first use a weed killer for any current vegetation. After everything dies off, collect it neatly and make sure you dont leave any remains. Read the weedkiller instructions carefully to know exactly when to seed your new lawn.
  • If there is any sign of moles in the area, you should get rid of the moles first.
  • Aerate the soil with your preferred tool, for example, a plug aerator or aerator shoes. Dig into your soil until about 2 to 3 inches in depth and make sure that everything is evenly aerated, meaning no clumps are left.
  • Spread your starter fertilizer evenly across the lawn area.
  • Cover the field with your preferred seed. Again, follow the instructions that are provided with the packaging.
  • Grab your favorite leaf rake and gently drag it over the surface to ensure that your seeds are distributed evenly across the soil.
  • Now, its time for watering, which you should do twice per day, once in the morning and evening. Be careful to avoid over watering or drenching your lawn.
  • After your grass reaches around 3 inches in height, you can start mowing regularly.
  • Once four to six weeks pass, youll apply the slow-release fertilizer.
  • Keep an eye out for weeds as an abundance can disrupt the grass growth. Use high-quality broad leaf weed herbicide to get rid of it.
  • Sit back and admire your work. Dont forget to mow one or two times per week and use a slow-release fertilizer two to three times a year.

    Bermuda Zoysia & Centipede

    Early Spring

Omit fertilizer for these months. Your grass will be dormant, and you dont want to promote growth during this time.

Pre-emergent exception: You may apply a low nitrogen fertilizer and pre-emergent combo from late February to early March to prevent weed seeds from germinating. An example of a low nitrogen ratio is 0-0-7 with pre-emergent.

Limestone: During early spring, conduct a soil test to determine if the pH of your soil is too acidic. If the results of your soil test pH are too low, apply lime to your lawn. We recommend Pelletized Dolomitic Limestone.

    Spring

When all of your grass is green and completely out of dormancy, apply 16-4-8 + Iron to Bermudagrass and Zoysiagrass.

Since Centipedegrass likes low nitrogen, apply 5-10-30 + Iron to it. Centipede fertility is a little different than other lawns so read our Fertilizer Tricks for your Centipede Lawn.

Organic Lawn Care Alternative: Instead of applying fertilizer, topdress your lawn with Soil3 organic humus compost. This will act as one application of fertilizer for the year and cut down on your chemical use.

    Mid- Summer

Apply 16-4-8 + Iron as your final application of fertilizer for the year.

    Choosing Fertilizers For Home Lawns

Burned grass is a drawback of fast release nitrogen fertilizers.

Fertilizing is an important lawn care practice, as it influences grass color, ability to recover from stress, and helps prevent weed invasions and disease. There are important features to consider when choosing lawn fertilizers at the local garden center.

Nitrogen , phosphorus , and potassium are the three major nutrients needed by lawns. Nitrogen is the nutrient required most, although too much nitrogen can cause excessive topgrowth, leading to assorted problems. Percent nitrogen is always the first of three numbers on the fertilizer bag, followed by phosphorus and potassium. For example, a 18-6-12 fertilizer contains 18 percent nitrogen. This number is important because it determines how much fertilizer is needed. In most cases, a rate of one pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet is suggested for each fertilizer application to the lawn. If high percentage nitrogen fertilizers are used, then less actual fertilizer product is needed to supply that one pound compared to fertilizers with low percent nitrogen. Recommended ratios of N-P-K for lawn fertilizers include 3:1:2 or 4:1:2.

What Are The Most Important Nutrients For A New Lawn

While new growth needs the same nutrients as existing grass, different quantities are needed and for slightly different reasons.

You should always look at the nitrogen and phosphorus when selecting a fertilizer. Ratio and potassium or NPK. The primary things that plants need to grow are these three nutrients. They are present in most soils, but adding fertilizer ensures that no deficiencies are present.

Nitrogen encourages good overall growth and is important for the deep, dark green that youre used to seeing to improve your lawn. Potassium makes plants strong and more resistant to severe conditions, such as drought, disease, and prolonged hot or cold conditions.

Phosphorus is especially important for new growth, as described, and heres why: it is necessary for root growth. For your new grass to grow, a strong root system that develops early on is essential. Plus, a deficiency of phosphorus results in overall slow growth.

Quick-release nitrogen and phosphorus are the two big factors to look for in fertilizer for new grass. This helps your grass, above and below ground, grow fast and solid.

The Best Time To Apply Fertilizer For New Grass

Basically, there are 3 main moments you can apply this type of fertilizer as follows:

    • Before planting the grass seeds, you need to prepare the soil. This is the first time you have to add fertilizer. It penetrates the soil easily, and it is time to attack the roots of the weeds that you don´t see on the surface.
    • Right after planting the seeds, you can add fertilizer to complement the process. It will help the seeds to absorb extra nutrients from the very beginning.
    • After 3 or 4 weeks of seeding. Although it is not the best moment, you still have time to obtain the benefits. Also, if you started to notice some weeds, you can include products that contain and prevent weed killers.

Between August and November, grass slows down and prepares for the winter months. At the same time, broadleaf weeds start active growth again. With Pennington UltraGreen Winterizer Plus Weed & Feed Fertilizer 22-0-14, you can feed your northern or southern lawn nutrients essential to its winter prep and spring green-up and kill broadleaf weeds. As a general rule, allow six to eight weeks between fertilizing and your first expected frost.

As with all fertilizer products, check the label and follow instructions for your specific grass type. If you’re overseeding, wait until next year for weed & feed. Instead, turn to Pennington UltraGreen Lawn Fertilizer 30-0-4 for the year’s final feeding.

Always sweep excess fertilizer off sidewalks and patios to avoid runoff.

How Often To Fertilize New Grass

In most cases, you should only fertilize new grass once, right before you spread the seed. Because fertilizer for new grass is different from regular fertilizer, the nutrients in it can damage established lawns.

Most new grass fertilizers will tell you how long the product is effective. Some last as long as eight to twelve weeks, so you may have a bit of time before you have to worry about fertilizing again.

Generally, you should wait at least six weeks before applying more fertilizer. Remember, once your seeds have grown tall enough to be mown, the lawn is no longer considered new and you should switch to a regular lawn care routine.

What does that mean? First, you wont need to water it nearly as much. Established lawns only need about one to 1.5 inches of water a week. Second, you should stop using a new lawn fertilizer and switch to regular formula.

That said, its a good idea to give your lawn an application of slow-release fertilizer in the fall to give it a bit of support over the long, cold winter. Just be sure to do so well before the first frost, so you dont damage your lawn.

In the spring, use a regular fertilizer about six weeks after youve mown the lawn a few times. When summer hits, if your grass still needs a bit of help, you can apply a slow-release fertilizer, but only when needed.

What Is The Best Fertilizer To Use On New Grass Seed

A lush lawn is an exciting prospect when youre thinking about replanting your yard. You want the grass to grow in as thick and green as possible. You want to know which type of fertilizer will do the job the best.

For newly planted grass seed, a starter fertilizer will work best for those early growth stages. As the grass grows, you can move on to stronger, normal-use fertilizers, but those wont provide the proper nutrients for a budding lawn.

Compost is always an excellent fertilizing option, but again, the balance of nutrients for a new lawn might not be enough to ensure firm establishment and full coverage.

What Fertilizer To Use After Overseeding

After overseeding your lawn, apply a lawn starter fertilizer to provide grass seedlings with the nutrients they need to establish themselves. Do not substitute lawn starter with a fertilizer meant for mature grass. Mature grass fertilizer doesnt contain the nutrients new grass needs to develop roots. Similarly, avoid using weed and feed fertilizers. These products will kill your grass seedlings.

One of the most frustrating situations when seeding a new lawn or repairing places in an existing one is doing all the work and watching the seeds sprout, grow – and then die off. Although a variety of factors can cause this, improper fertilization is a common culprit. Seeds need nutrients to get off to a strong start, which is why applying starter fertilizer at the correct time is critical.

Fertilizer For Spring Summer And Fall: What To Apply And When

The proud owners of lush, thick, green grass understand what it takes to get and keep an enviable lawn and fertilizer is their superpower. Knowing all there is to know about how and when to fertilize is their advantage. If you have just had your lawn replaced with thick lush new sod then you want to keep it that way.

Fertilizing your grass isn’t as elementary as sprinkling whatever you have in the shed on your lawn. Fertilizers all present with three numbers that tell us a lot about what’s in the bag. The first number indicates how much nitrogen can be found in a particular fertilizer. The second number represents levels of phosphorus and the third, potassium. Follow this schedule and treat your lawn on a seasonal basis.

    Spring

Keep in mind that there are other things you can do before it’s time to fertilize. In late May or early June, before the heat of the summer arrives, apply some slow release nitrogen. This will encourage the grass to rebuild.

A good dose of nitrogen rich fertilizer will also arm your lawn. Fighting off the stresses of summer, traffic, disease, heat, and drought. Fertilizer is its defense. If you can’t stand to sit around and do nothing when the snow melts and the grass that emerges looks like its dead, consider an herbicide. However, herbicides can be harsh on grass, so ensure your herbicide contains a little fertilizer to help your lawn fight the negative effects herbicides can have on grass.

Are You A Part Of The 28%

You might not believe it, but for many Americans having a green lawn is quite a psychological thing.

It’s called “lawn envy,” and a poll of 1,055 homeowners revealed that 64% say their neighbors have “the best lawn on the block.”

There is something undeniably pleasing about the fact that your lawn is lush, thick, thriving, and vibrant.

Your neighbors might not know exactly how to maintain their green lawn, nor be able to put their fingers on precisely what makes one person’s lawn so much more superior than another’s.

But rest assured, people who walk by can instantly tell if your lawn is thriving and, by extension, if you care about it enough or not.

Part of this lawn envy is judging others: 49% say people who don’t take care of their lawns are “lazy or inconsiderate.”

There’s hope, however: 28% of Americans are proud of their lawns.

With that in mind, let’s help you become a coveted part of the 28% of Americans are proud of their lawns. How? By nailing the most important part of the process: fertilization!

What If My Grass Seed Doesnt Grow

Grass will generally germinate two or three weeks after planting. If you dont notice sprouts and seedlings after that period of time, there are a few reasons why the grass may not have grown:

    • Seedlings need water daily during their germination period, but too much water can drown them. Check the soil moisture depth to see how wet the soil is below the surface.
    • New plants need sunlight to germinate, but too much sun will dry out the ground and the seeds. A good balance of shade and sun exposure, specific to the type of grass planted, will help the grass grow in healthy.
    • If you didnt spread enough seeds, the new grass might not grow into the widespread, complex plan system that we want to cover our yard. Check the package as well to be sure the seeds werent too old to germinate.
    • It might be that you didnt use enough fertilizer or that the soil balance was still off. Try another soil sample test to review the nutrient profile.

If your grass hasnt grown, and its still early in the year, there may be time to replant and try again. Spring grasses should be planted in March, April, or May before the daily temperatures get too hot for newly sprouted grass.

Make sure to plant cool-weather grasses in September or October, several weeks before the first frost.

When grass seed doesnt establish, planting sod can be a good way to get your yard going. When pieces of sod are planted and watered, theyll fill in the soil between pieces until the yard is covered.

Best Fertilizer To Prep Your Lawn For Winter

Time to Fertilize New Grass Seedlings

I like Jonathan Green Winter Survival Fall Fertilizer, a late-fall fertilizer, because its low in nitrogen and has a healthy amount of potassium.

We want our lawns to slow down as winter approaches. Applying too much nitrogen forces it to grow when it would rather start preparing for winter. The 10-0-20 analysis delivers just enough nitrogen to help repair your lawn from a stressful summer and to give it a kick-start the following spring. The healthy dose of potassium will also safeguard your lawn from potential snow mold activity and severe winter conditions.

    Where Are All The Acorns

Q: In 2019 and 2020 my oak trees produced lots of acorns. Last year I couldnt walk near the trees without stepping on several at a time. This year there are almost no acorns on the ground. Why is there such a drastic change? Lane County

A: Acorn production is relatively unpredictable from year to year and there is some anecdotal information that suggests heavy seed-crop years are followed by one or more years of poor productivity. In years of low or moderate acorn production, most acorns are consumed by insects, so production seems even lower than it is. Hopefully, you will see a large acorn production from your tree again in a few years. Lauren Grand, OSU Extension forestry specialist
