How To Tell If You Have Lawn Grubs
The first sign of lawn grubs is often irregular brown patches in your lawn. These could be caused by many different factors, but if you can pull up the grass easily, its a clear indicatorthe grubs will have chewed through the roots, making it easy to separate from the soil.
Increased animal activity is another sign. Grubs make up a large part of the diets of skunks, raccoons, and birds. If you notice a lot more holes in your lawn from digging or pecking, these critters might be after abundant grubs.
Can You Put Down Grub Killer And Grass Seed At The Same Time
Luckily, there is no active ingredient in grub killer that will impact the growth and health of newly seeded grass.
Grubs cause most of the trauma to your grass in spring, however in fall as well, therefore I would skip on the reseeding during spring and focus on preventing an infestation, and then once your grass is free, or in limited supply, of grubs, I would apply and nurture the grass seeds.
Inspecting Grubs In Lawn
Finding a perpetrator is a piece of cake, just check the damaged area for these pests. You will hardly confuse them with anything else, as grub worms have a peculiar body C-shape, six short legs, brown head and a cream body. Their lower abdomen is darker due to the soil particles in it. Grub worms can reach two inches in length.
Remove some of the damaged soil carefully, and check for the grub worms matching the above description. If you find five or fewer, do not worry, but they can definitely do harm to your lawn if there are over ten of them. Still, consider other factors of grass withering. For instance, in shady places, grass roots weaken and tear easily and larvae do not hatch. Another signal of these pests infecting your garden will be skunks and raccoons digging the lawn at night in search of food. It is highly likely that they are looking specifically for these pests.

Chemical Ways To Get Rid Of Lawn Grubs
Chemical control is sure to kill off your lawn grubs, but it comes at a costusing these treatments can kill beneficial insects, too. There are two types of chemical treatments.
Are There Natural Treatments For Grub Infestations
The two natural products we are asked about most are milky spore and nematodes.
Milky spore is a bacterium that is effective for controlling Japanese beetle larvae, provided the spring soils are sufficiently warm. While the research on milky spore in our region hasnt been revisited recently, the latest research findings are that spring soils in Northern New England are too cold for milky spore to be effective. That said, there is anecdotal evidence that it has shown at least some efficacy in warmer micro-climates within southern New Hampshire. Milky spore may be worth a try if you are:
- Sure that the grubs in your lawn are the larvae of Japanese beetles
- In a warmer microclimate within southern New Hampshire
Keep in mind that milky spore will take several years to achieve good results.
Nematodes are microscopic worms, and some species of nematodes can work very well for controlling grubs in home lawns. To successfully use nematodes for grub control, you should keep the following principles in mind:
For home gardeners that do their homework and follow instructions carefully, nematodes can be a great natural option for controlling grubs.

Whats The Best Grub Killer
There are a number of ways to deal with these unwelcome pests and, fortunately, theyre very effective.
Applying Amgrow Patrol granulated pesticide during the spring is one of the most effective ways to kill the grass grubs before they enter the destructive stage of their lifecycle.
Pesticides such as Amgrow Patrol or Acelepryn GR kill all types of grass grubs including African Black Beetle, Argentinian Scarab, Sod Webworm and Lawn Armyworm.
Its best to apply pesticide early in the evening when the adults are active.
Water these products into the lawn to take the chemical away from children or pets and human contact.
Please adhere to the safety directions on the product label.
And then there are some natural methods of control.
Removing the adult beetles and egg sacs by hand is a laborious but very effective method if you only have a minor infestation.
Its inevitable that youll miss some and youll have to repeat the process.
Placing carpet or sacking over the lawn at night will bring the grubs to the surface where you can pick them off and destroy them.
Neem oil is another natural option that works by interrupting the adults mating and feeding patterns leading to their deaths.
Keeping your lawn healthy is also essential to limit the damage grass grubs can do.
The regrowth rate of healthy grass will enable your lawn to outgrow the appetites of the invaders.
Keeping your lawn well-fertilised, watered and lush will help it survive.
Soapy Water Lawn Grubs
You can eliminate lawn grubs efficiently with the help of soapy water. Dawn dish soap is popularly used to eliminate grubs on the lawn.
Here are instructions on how to make the solution.
- Add 3 teaspoons of liquid soap to a gallon of water. Stir thoroughly to make a fine mixture.
- Spray this solution on the patches where the grass turned brown. Check to see if you eliminated them successfully.
- If they persist, treat the brown patches once more.
This works best when theres a small infestation in parts of the lawn. If grubs are devouring a large part of your lawn, this method might not be as efficient.
Tip: Add some lemon and mouthwash to make the solution more efficient.

Killing Grubs Starts By Knowing The Enemy
Lawn grubs are pretty gross, we know.
Grubs are technically the larvae of bugs like Japanese Beetles, European Chafers, Southern Masked Chafers, and June Beetles. They are white and C-shaped with soft, squishy bodies and legs right beneath their heads. And throughout their life cycles, they can actually damage your plants above and below ground.
How To Apply Beneficial Nematodes For Natural Grub Control
Beneficial Nematodes for Grub Control are easy to apply. A hose end sprayer is probably the preferred method of application. The nematodes come in a powder and you add the powder to some water in your hose end sprayer, shake it up, and apply it over the area you’d like to treat, until you’ve used up the right amount of nematodes. Nematodes can die in the sunlight, so it helps to use a lot of water when you’re applying them and water them into the soil. If you do the application in the evening, that gives the nematodes all night to work their way into the soil before the sun comes up the next day.

How To Treat Grubs In Minneapolis Lawns
Here at KG Landscape, we think of the two weeks of the Minnesota State Fair as a great time to apply insecticides for grubs. By that time, the grubs have had enough time to start feeding on the roots and be very close to the soil surface but they are still small and easy to kill. The best treatment for these grubs is a chemical called Imidacloprid. It is safe for mammals and most fish so it has a small impact on the local ecosystem but does kill the grubs damaging the grass. We use a granular treatment that only requires one treatment per year until they are completely eradicated. It may or may not effect some honeybees, but if applied to only grass areas with possible grub damage, the impact on these important creatures will be minimal.

How Do I Know If I Have A Problem
Affected areas will feel soft and spongy to walk on, and turf in these spots can be lifted up with ease. Carefully fold back the turf and note the number of grubs exposed. Eight to 10 grubs per square foot can damage a lawn.
Damage is most severe in the spring and fall when moisture levels in the soil are high. During drier periods, the eggs may be killed and surviving larvae can be found deeper in the soil. Extremely dry summers destroy many eggs and newly hatched grubs. Mature grubs can be found near the surface in late summer and early fall.
Often, skunks and other small mammals will pull back the turf to feed on grubs in the spring or fall. This secondary damage to your lawn, as well as flocks of starlings and blackbirds feeding on your lawn, are signs of a grub infestation. If you have any of these natural predators digging at your grass, check for white grubs. Many people notice these indicators first.

Is there anything more damaging than grubs in your lawn?
Few admire their looks. But, before dismissing them as nothing but gross menaces, grubs the larval stage of certain adult beetles are common in lawns and do play a role in the natural order of things .
David Shetlar is a professor emeritus with a doctoral degree in entomology at The Ohio State University. Hes also co-author of the comprehensive guide Garden Insects of North America, plus other pest management tomes including Managing Turfgrass Pests.
Shetlar chuckled brightly when asked if lawn grubs, commonly called white grubs, play a positive part in a lawns ecosystem. Everybody says grubs eat the grass roots, he said, but theres more to them than that. White grubs are eating the accumulated thatch and organic matter thats in the top inch of the soil profile.
Theyre sort of natures de-thatchers, he added. But the problem is, theyre eating that thatch, they do eat the roots and the crowns , which kills the plant.
Its when these de-thatcher populations grow out of control that the dreaded lawn damage takes place.

Fixing Grubworm Lawn Damage
Dead patches make the lawn look ugly, but theres something you can do to fix them and restore your lawn to a lush green look. Grubs kill grass because they feed on the roots. If the damage is extensive, it may be difficult to attempt reviving the grass successfully.
If the damaged grass peels off the soil like carpet, then you want to consider removing the dead patches and planting new grass in the bare spots.
In general, here are options on what to do to repair the damage in your lawn:
- Rake over the dead grass to expose the soil and reseed the bare spots with new grass seed.
- If the bare spots are small and the turfgrass is not completely dead, overseed the lawn in early spring to early summer especially if it is Bermuda grass.
- Fill in the bare spots with sod if you do not want to wait for the turf to refill with new grass.
Keep in mind that before the damage occurs, it is best to prevent and control pests in your lawn. If you had any grubs in your turf last year, ensure you put down a grub killer and preventative treatment early spring to stop and prevent damage early enough.
When To Apply Grub Worm Treatment
Once lawn grubs have been detected and treatment is necessary, you need to know when to apply grub worm treatment. The best time for treating grub worms is in late summer or early fall while the grub worms are still small and close to the surface.
Grub worms are less susceptible to treatment in the spring, as they are too large and no longer feeding. For this reason, insecticides are less effective. Spring rains can also make this difficult, as applications may be washed away.
When choosing insecticides for lawn grubs, its important to consider the various types. For fall treatment, Dylox is the most effective and fast acting available. However, two products worth consideration for use early in the season, Merit and Mach-2, can be helpful for prevention. These target the pests before they lay their eggs, killing them and any hatchlings before an infestation occurs. Always read and follow instructions carefully when using these types of products.
