The rate of application indicated on the label is the lowest amount to use while ensuring it is effective. Essentially, using less will not have the intended result and using more will not offer better results.
If a pesticide must be used, carefully read and follow all label instructions. Before you purchase a pesticide, ensure that you have identified the pest correctly and explored other options for controlling the pest, such as physical barriers, removing the pest’s access to food and water or using alternative products. Which Laboratories Perform Pesticide Testing
Studies are conducted by a combination of independent laboratories and registrant laboratories, and must follow internationally developed and validated test guidelines for study protocols that adhere to the principles of Good Laboratory Practice. The extensive data reporting that is required allows Health Canada scientists to conduct independent analyses of the data.
Can I Purchase Pesticides That Are Registered In The United States But Not Canada And Use Them In Canada
It is an offence under the PCPA to import, sell or use a product that is not registered in Canada. Look for the Pest Control Product registration number on the product label to ensure that the product is registered for use in Canada.
However, for the benefit of Canadian farmers, the Grower Requested Own Use program authorizes the import of the US version of a Canadian registered product, with an approved Import Certificate. The GROU products must be purchased and imported by growers for their own use on their land, and for one growing season only.

What Should I Do If I See Pesticides Being Misused
If you believe a pesticide is not being used according to the label instructions, please contact the Pest Management Information Service at 1-800-267-6315.
If possible, please provide the type of pesticide involved, the trade name or the name of the active ingredient. The time and location of the possible offense is also important. Upon notification, Health Canada will take appropriate action.
Provincial or municipal regulating authorities can also be contacted regarding the use of pesticides related to provincial laws or municipal by-laws.
If A Pesticide Is Registered In Canada Does It Mean I Can Use It
The pesticide label outlines who can use a pesticide, and under what circumstances it can be used. Pesticides under federal regulation are organized into four distinct classes, based on where, when and by whom they may be applied:
- Domestic class products are for personal use in and around the home.
- Commercial class products are restricted to commercial activities as indicated on the label. These are not available to the general public for use in and around the home.
- Restricted products can only be used under certain circumstances by specially trained individuals. These are not available to the general public.
- Finally, manufacturing class products are used in the production of other pesticides or products regulated under the Feeds Act or Fertilizers Act.

Environmental Impact Offertilizers And Pesticides
Unfortunately, the many advantages ofpesticide and fertilizer use are counterbalanced by problems that are directlyrelated to their toxicity. One example is that beneficial insects that helpbalance the ecosystem are often harmed or killed by pesticides that are used toprotect crops from harmful pests. The chemicals that are used in pesticides andfertilizers become runoff, which can drain into our streams and lakes,eventually contaminating our water supplies. Excess nitrogen from fertilizerrunoff can cause algae growth in rivers and lakes. Too much algae can lead tothe death of fish and other aquatic life, as excessive algae can deplete oxygenlevels in our lakes, rivers, and streams, making it impossible for fish tosurvive.

Because they are so dangerous and persistent, using pesticides should be restricted. In most cases, unless some huge infestation has eaten half the leaves of a plant, you can handle the issue with household items and manual removal. Many insects can be dissuaded or even killed with a simple at-home spray with water and a few drops of dishwashing concentrate.
There are many recipes on the internet for home-brewed bug juice with ingredients like mint, garlic, and citrus. If you must use chemicals in your garden, pay special attention to pesticide application timing and be cautious not only about your own health but also that of others and of wildlife too.

How Chemicals Spread In The Environment
Pesticides can reach unintended targets in any of several ways: they can be spilled into or near waterways, they can leach or percolate into water, they can be passed on from one organism to another that ingests it, they can drift with the wind when they are first sprayed, or evaporate afterwards and then drift. They can even be carried into the home on shoes.
Tracked in pesticides affect people in urban environments where agricultural pesticides are rare but lawn-care pesticides common. It doesnt seem that significant amounts could be transported by such a method, but as long ago as 1997, the EPA reported otherwise. The study, which followed several chemicals including 2,4-D, concluded that track-in on shoes is a reasonable mechanism by which lawn-applied pesticides are carried into the home.
This study found that pesticides were still being tracked in five and even six days after the pesticide was applied . Most herbicides and insecticides for lawns warn people to stay off the grass for only 24 hours after use.

Weed Spray Can Have Long Lasting Effects
One of the worst things that people do to combat the weeds in their yards is to apply Weed and Feed fertilizer that has the herbicide already mixed in. That way youre applying herbicide all over your entire lawn when you really only have a few dozen weeds.
The best way to apply the herbicide is to get a small spray bottle and only spray the weeds you want to kill. Your lawn will then only receive about 1% to 3% of the amount of chemicals that it would have had you broadcast sprayed or covered it with fertilizer mixed with weed killer.

Other Legislative Requirements Exception
An exception to the ban for the use of Class 9 pesticides is provided for the purpose of complying with a requirement under other federal or provincial legislation. For example, a weed inspector has authority to issue an order to destroy a noxious weed, which is negatively affecting agricultural land, as listed under made under the Weed Control Act. The written order will list the weed to be controlled and the exact location to be treated. A person has the responsibility to ensure that, before he or she uses a Class 9 pesticide for this excepted use, he or she is complying with the written order. Furthermore, this exception only applies if the use of a Class 9 pesticide is the only effective and practical means of complying with the order.

Lawn Pesticides Not Worth The Danger
I think it’s fair to say that Americans have an unhealthy obsession with their lawns. Between the herbicides and insecticides applied by commercial lawn care fleets and those bought and applied by homeowners themselves, Americans dump at least 80 million pounds of pesticides on their yards each year, much more per acre than agriculture. By this time of year, the little yellow stakes warning of a pesticide application pop up in many a public and residential lot, and the plastic-y scent of fresh chemicals can often by detected, wafting through the neighborhood.
The biologist and activist Sandra Steingraber writes a lot about “toxic trespass,” the notion that human beings are, on a daily basis, exposed to a slew of toxic chemicals, byproducts of industries near and far that contaminate our environment and enter our bodies without our consent. But in the case of lawn pesticides, we have no outside entity to blame we are poisoning ourselves and our children, our neighbors, our pets, our water and our birds.
Fifteen million birds are estimated to die each year from pesticide contamination. A 2013 study implicated it as the “most likely leading cause” of declining numbers of grassland birds, which are likely exposed to agricultural pesticides. Seven million birds are thought to die from lawn chemicals alone, but because dead birds are rarely recovered, these numbers are surely much higher.

How Can I Dispose Of Pesticides
When purchasing a pesticide, try to buy only as much as you need to avoid having leftover product to dispose. If you do need to store unused pesticides, ensure that they are placed in a secure location, out of the reach of children and pets. Never store pesticides in a container other than the original container and never re-use empty pesticide containers.
To dispose of pesticides, small quantities of unused products and empty containers may be wrapped in several layers of newspaper and disposed of in the household garbage. Never burn or pour pesticides down the drain.

Apply weed killer before fertilizer, becauseweed killer stresses plants somewhat, and the fertilizer will help themrecover. Just wait at least 30 minutesafter treating with weed killer before applying fertilizer.
