Not All Types Of Mowing Are Profitable

ð± $500 in 5 Hours SOLO (9 Lawns) ð°Self-Employed Mowing ð?ð?»â?âï¸? Start a Lawn Care Business – Exmark 30″

The main types of mowers you’ll see are catch, mulch and side-deliver. In a perfect world we would side deliver, side throw on all our lawns. These types of mowers are by far the fastest and easiest. Next is mulch mowing. It’s both quick and very good for most lawns. So it’s a great environmental solution. Catching is one of the slowest and even if you start charging more, it’s always harder to recoup all your time and effort. The best catcher is a Reel Mower but this is really for the flat lawn that will be kept in the best shape. Again you will have to charge a premium. By encouraging your clients to mulch you will be both fast and environmentally friendly. Just remember that the client is always right, so do what they want, but it doesn’t hurt to sell and promote mulching. In the end, it does grow a healthier grass, which is something all clients want.

How To Make A Lawn Mowing Ad

When it comes to advertising for your lawn mowing business, youll need to come up with creative ways of getting the word out there. This is especially true if youre starting up a new service that no one has ever heard about before. One effective way of doing that is by creating an ad that will later be displayed on Google or Bing.

When it comes to creating a lawn mowing ad, you have several options. The first thing you should do is think about who your target audience is going to be. Once you know that, try searching for the top searched phrases connected with your niche and see if any of them are appropriate for an ad.

Tip : Stay Organised From The Start Before You Get Busy

When you own a lawn care service, your most important job, of course, would be the actual lawn care. However, even if you only have a couple of customers when you first start your lawn care business, it is important that you record details so that you can create a good habit in the beginning. These days, you should really be somewhat familiar with excel, google sheets, or even specialised software.

Here’s a pretty entertaining video from Curtis from New Orleans on running his lawn care business, he really breaks things down.

Are You Working By Yourself Or Employing A Sidekick

If you are working by yourself you can make up to $60 an hour if you do it right and I tell you how later. If you are employing a sidekick then you will need to do your sums to tell you if it is worth it.

I have found from experience that a helper does not double your income, it tends only to increase turnover by a third. If you are turning over $2000 a week and you employ someone to help you full time then you will struggle to turnover more than $3000.

Once you have paid the worker and covered taxes, accident, sickness and holidays you will not have much change left from the extra $1000 you turned over. You need to ask yourself if it is worth it.

If found that having a helper with me basically broke even. I got to have some company while I worked but for the extra administration involved, I decided it was not worth it.

However, I was able to send workers out solo in separate vehicles and make $300-$350 a week profit on each vehicle which was better.

If you are a couple then working together can work as you get to keep the income. This can work but you are not going to break the $60 each barrier working together. You will need to work in separate vehicles to do that.

How And When To Build A Team

Many start out as single workers and owner/operators and then add one assistant when the workload increases. You can hire additional crew if the jobs can be found and the necessary equipment is available. Expansion requires capturing more jobs, having available workers, sufficient equipment, and open work-time slots for scheduling.Make sure to hire documented workers because it is dangerous to use undocumented workers and there are hefty fines .

Your Chosen Service Area Will Affect Your Income

What area do you intend to service?

My first lawn care business was on a peninsula and the area I serviced was in a T pattern. If the area you are going to serve is this shape you will not get the best income as you will be doubling up on your route on occasion leading to lower productivity.

The area I serve now is a town of 165000 with a ring road going around it. This kind of shaped area allows you to pass through all the suburbs in a day and arrive back home. This kind of shape will allow you to produce a high income.

There are a couple of traps to watch out for even if you are working a good shaped area.

Urban spread Define your boundaries early and stick to them. If you are running a business in a large city it is easy to accept a new job on the fringes of your round because they are near an existing job. The more often you do this the more spread out your business becomes. You will find yourself traveling further and further from your base and profitability will drop. Try to stick to nothing more than a five-mile radius from where you live.

Before I started selling quotes I used to find lawn care operators who work in adjourning areas but not my area and I would refer out of area work to them if they did the same for me.

Try to pass through each suburb only once. If you can try to mow your local yards first and this will give you a better chance of lining up any quotes that come through during the day.

These factors may then be used to assess and score a lawn to help provide a reasonable price for lawn mowing.

So What Is A Fair Rate

No doubt about it, the consensus among the lawn care services who participated in our poll is that the average charge for professional lawn mowing services is around $1 per minute of grass cutting.

Put another way, lets say it takes your lawn mowing service 30 minutes to mow your yard by himself. You can figure the $30 per lawn mowing is a fair price to pay based on average market pricing.

Now lets say he has a helper and there are 2 men on the lawn care team?

Well, then he needs to be in and out of your lawn in 15-20 mins for that $30 price.

Make sense?

How To Market A Lawn Care Or Landscaping Business

Solo Lawn Mowing $500/day | Make Money Mowing

Whether you are cutting grass in Lebanon, Tennessee or landscaping in Marietta, Georgia, doing the work is the easy part. Getting and obtaining the customers is the hard part. In the early days, I recommend handing out as many flyers as possible. You should be able to acquire at least 1 new customer for every 1,000 flyers you pass out. It is a cheap and effective way to grind it out and get new customers. Focus on density with your flyers, passing them out in a tight geographical area. This way you wont be driving all over town when you start getting clients. Once you start getting initial customers I recommend treating them like gold, as referrals will be your most valuable method of getting new business. As you grow your business, I recommend investing in basic online marketing. Here is our tutorial on how to promote your business with flyers.

What Are The Licenses And Permits Needed

To get started with only mowing lawns you will not need a permit in most municipalities. However, you will most likely need a business license that all business should have.

As you grow your business, you may offer herbicide applications such as RoundUp to spray for weeds in your customers landscaping beds. In most states you will need an additional license for that.

Start Early Finish Early

This is especially important for running a lawn mowing business in main urban centres to avoid traffic. The early bird catches the worm, so find the lawn suitable for early starts. Usually it’s a commercial client that will not impact on late sleeping clients and neighbours. Finishing early means you have more time in the evening to get your admin sorted as well.

How Can I Find More Lawn Mowing Customers

When trying to get new lawn mowing customers, you should never underestimate the power of your current customer base. Reach out to your satisfied clients and ask them how they heard about you. Ask if they would be willing to refer your company based on their experience working with you.

If not, see if theyd be willing to place a small, inconspicuous ad on their lawn sign indicating that they use your company. The ads can say something like Proud customer of XYZ Lawn Care, and the cost is virtually nothing for you because it will be free advertising for them.

Create a list of homeowners who have just moved into the area or who have purchased new homes in your service area. If you know the neighborhood well enough, you may even have a list of current residents who have recently moved out and left behind unused garden tools.

Contact these people about offering an introductory price for your lawn mowing services. The introductory rate will give them a discount in return for possibly referring you to their neighbors.

How Much Do Lawn Care Businesses Make

How much you make depends on how much work youre willing to do.

Some lawn care business owners make $10,000 a year while others make $100,000. It all depends on your team size, efficiency, the services you offer, and your profit margins.

Phil Sarros, Director of Education at Steel Toe University

40% is the ideal profit margin, says Phil Sarros.

Im not saying every job you do is going to have a 40% profit margin. But, once you understand bidding and estimating, targeting specific clientele, and putting out proposals at 40% margins, youre going to have the flexibility to negotiate with new clients.

Start small and grow strategically

Having a 40% profit margin and earning 100k a year may sound nice right now, but its a tough journey to get there.

Starting off by pricing low is usually the only way to get your foot in the door.

But after a few months of hustling and saving your money, you could invest, say, $60 in a herbicide sprayer. In a year, you might decide to spend $200 on a commercial-grade trimmer.

At this point, you can offer weeding and trimming as services. Little by little, investing in better equipment will help you expand your services to things like pest control, tree care, and even landscaping.

That gives you the leeway to charge moreand profit moreon every job.

Why Start A Lawn Mowing Business

A lawn mowing business offers anyone thats fit, honest and hard-working the opportunity to be their own boss and build a profitable business. A lawn mowing business also has low barriers to entry – all you need is a some basic equipment and a way of getting to jobs to be up and running.

Whilst running a lawn mowing business, you will encounter people from all walks of life and work across the whole spectrum of properties. In my own business, I cut the grass at anything from bungalows in the suburbs to large country houses with several acres and at commercial properties in town.

Lawn mowing can also be very satisfying work, particularly when customers appreciate the extra effort you put in to make their properties look their best.
