Filling Big Dips In Your Lumpy Lawn
For holes in the lawn, my advice would be to use a sharp knife of a lawn edger to remove the turf. Make sure you have a good 2-3 cm of soil on the back of your turf and set it to one side. Fill the hole with soil from elsewhere in the garden. If you use imported topsoil youll find that the grass will always look different where youve made the repair. Be sure to press the new topsoil down firmly. You dont want it to settle and sink in the next few weeks!
Replace the turf carefully, ensuring that it is nice and level. Keep it well watered for 3-4 weeks while the grasses regrow their roots.
Use A High Pressure Hose
You have the choice of power washing or utilizing a high-pressure hose to remove from your lawn or garden effectively. Infrequently, the sand will sweep away, producing a coating of filth in its place. You can begin utilizing a high-pressure hose by following the instructions below:

How To Get Rid Of Dirt That Is Lying On Grass
After doing some work in my garden there are areas of the grass with dirt on it. What can I do to remove it effectively?
Pick up what you can with a dustpan and stiff brush, or other means, then just use a stiffish broom to brush it in order to spread it out, till it more or less disappears. If this is caused by where you’ve dug plants up and put them on the grass, next time, use a tarp or sheet of plastic laid on top of the grass, then fold over, pick it up and tip the soil on open ground. Much easier that way…
The tarp thing works so very well especially to collect yard debris. I have to tell you this is no big deal for your lawn. I charged money to ‘top dress’ or dump soil on the lawns. We used big wide not too soft of brooms to knock piles of soil we dumped on the lawn. Then we’d reseed and roll. Grass is pretty tough stuff.
After aerating leave all the plugs of soil on your lawn without messing with them at all. Mole hills, just knock them down with a broom and be glad they are top dressing, eating grubs and aerating your lawn bed, for free! I am much more worried about the health of your lawn.
Mow no shorter than 3″…not 2 1/2 but 3″. Water one inch per week and train your lawn to be able to enjoy one deep watering per week. Will Grass Grow Over Sand
Yes, any sort of grass will grow over the sand. But the growth rate will be hindered. But if you can ensure their uninterrupted access to adequate nutritional elements, surely, they will grow vigorously.
Of course, sandy and gritty surfaces can affect the grass seeds after germination.But, its also true that only sand cannot cause the grass to grow vibrantly. So, you must build up a topsoil layer to let the roots avail adequate energy.
That being said, new grass growers or gardeners frequently ask- will grass grow in 2 inches of soil? The answer is not a complete no. Yes, it will grow, but a minimum of 4 inches of topsoil is highly recommended.

Top Dressing Your Lawn
The practice of top dressing started with golf courses. Some types of turfgrass tend to produce a lot of thatch. From there, homeowners started to adopt this process to keep their lawn looking its best. After all, theres no reason why your lawn shouldnt look well-manicured and meticulous like the golf course.
But as usual, there are voices that maintain that using sand as a top dresser for your lawn can bring more harm than good. They stress that sand prevents the grass from getting enough nutrients from the soil. There are also claims that sand reduces the fertility of the soil. But as every gardener will tell you, sand is mixed with heavy soil and clay all the time to improve drainage and aeration.
Also if you maintain your lawn with fertilizing and watering, the grass will not be impacted by the sand. And if the soil in your lawn is mostly loamy or sandy, then adding a thin layer of sand will not make much difference to the soil acidity, fertility, or pH levels.
Problems With Top Dressing With Sand
As with many DIY projects, a lot can go wrong if youre not careful. And since sand is an abrasive material especially on the grass, you want to avoid some common mistakes that people make. One of those problems is not applying the top dressing evenly. As mentioned, sand is at best a neutral element that doesnt improve the nutrition of the soil. At worst, it can prevent the grass from getting the nutrition it needs.
So always apply the sand evenly and use a rake to spread it and prevent little piles of it on the lawn. This could choke the grass. Its also recommended that the first time you apply sand as a top dressing to go with a very thin layer. Anything around an eighth of an inch should do until you get a better handle on the process.
Also, dont use sand as a top dressing for clay soil. This doesnt loosen the soil as much as creates a cement-like composition. Top dressing sand is not the same as mixing sand with clay to improve drainage. Youre not mixing the sand with the soil, youre just spreading on top of it which could have adverse effects.
Another problem comes from using contaminated sand. Make sure the sand is clean and doesnt contain seeds of weed which would spread across the lawn and damage the turfgrass. If you can, try to use sterilized sand. That would eliminate the risk of invasive plants.

Should I Leave Or Remove Sand Under A Demolished Brick Walkway To Allow Grass To Grow
I started demolishing an old brick walkway in my backyard and I found sand underneath about a good 3 inches worth of sand. My question is: If I leave the sand underneath and add about 2 inches of topsoil over the sand, will my grass grow on this top soil sitting on top of sand? Is it a bad idea to leave the sand down there? Should I remove it?
- 2Most good installs of brick pavers start with a layer of sand, if you put topsoil on top it will be fine and even better if you can mix the 2 in my opinion. Grass grows in sand dunes but will do better with some good soil mixed in Ed Beal
Just put the topsoil over the sand and seed it. The earthworms, and other dirt fauna will eventually mix it together.
It wouldn’t hurt to mix it yourself perhaps with a hoe, but it’s not really necessary.
I’d recommend removal – a little bit mixed in with soil is fine, but 2 inches of topsoil over 3 inches of sand means, although your grass will grow okay, if its a high traffic area, it won’t be ‘stable’, meaning it’ll slip and slide about a bit, so won’t remain level and even. If, though, it’s not a high traffic area and the only walking across it will be you with a mower occasionally, it’ll probably be okay. As its an old path, the risk of salts in the sand will be minimal.
What Do You Do With Sand In Your Yard
When you have sand in your yard, you can use it to build a sandbox for your children. You can also add sand to your garden or yard to provide proper drainage for low-lying areas prone to flooding.
This will help prevent waterlogged soil, which is especially important during the spring and fall when rain showers are common.

Q. I see some folks putting a layer of lawn dressing on their lawns in the spring. Whats the purpose for this and is it a good practice?
A. Routinely applying a layer of soil or sand to a lawn can cause more damage than good. This practice is sometimes referred to as topdressing. You can introduce weed seeds, nematodes and even diseases with some sources of lawn dressing. Basically, the only reasons to apply a layer of soil or sand to a lawn are to fill in low areas or bare areas, as a method of dealing with an identified thatch problem or possibly to cover surface tree roots.
Topdressing your lawn with sand on a regular basis is not a recommended practice.
Topdressing soil should be free of weeds and nematodes and should be of the same soil type as that on which the turf is currently growing.
While minor low spots can be corrected this way, you can easily overdo it and smother your lawn. Using topsoil from an unknown source may introduce undesirable plants and weeds into the landscape, creating additional work and expense to correct the problem.
To fill a low spot, shovel the sand, no more than about an inch or two deep, into the area. Its best to maintain the lawn normally until the grass has grown on top of the first layer. Repeat until the low spot is filled.

Topdressing with builders sand is a no-no. Its nasty sticky stuff that will stain your clothes and probably leave stones on the surface of the lawn. Itll crucify your mower blades too.
Topdressing with a sand-soil mix is something that needs great care. Youll find it described in many a lawncare book but in reality, its not as practical as they make it sound. Greenkeepers prefer to use an inert substance like the USGA sand Im using in the video. Introducing soil from an unknown source can also bring in weed seeds. If you are planning on re-seeding after topdressing, use a really good quality sand-soil mix from a reputable supplier.

If you are struggling with the green plant you might be tempted to try the common hack for removing moss using soap. However, a gardening expert reveals that this could do more damage to your garden.
When scarifying a lawn, the first step is to kill any moss spores. The dish soap moss hack is commonly used by gardeners as a simple and safe method to do this.
The method involves either sprinkling washing up powder over the affected area or spraying it with a solution of dish soap and water. After 24 hours, in theory, the moss should dry up and turn orange and brown, so you can rake it up.
However, Marcus Eyles, Horticultural Director at Dobbies Garden Centres warns that this tip is far from safe and effective.
If you are trying to get rid of garden moss, washing up powder or liquid should not be used. Not only is it not effective, but it can also have detrimental effects on wildlife, he explains.
Instead he recommends using Lawn Sand to remove any moss from your garden. The best product to use to remove it is Lawn Sand, he explains.
This will turn the moss black and you can then rake it out and add it to the compost heap. This should be used in line with the instructions on the pack.
