How To Fix Dirt Patches In Lawn

Say youve overfertilized or have become the target of some pesky dandelions. Whatever the reason, tending to a dirt patch is easy and will have your lawn looking lush and green in no time.

  • Start by breaking up the dirt whatever hand tool youre comfortable with.
  • If youre working with very clay-y soil, you can add some top soil.
  • Add your combination of grass seeds, considering shade and other factors to determine the best mix. Cover the dirt patch completely
  • Add a good starter fertilizer and spread so that the fertilizer, soil, and seeds are mixed.

Aerate And Overseed Your Lawn When Needed

Water and nutrients need to reach lawn roots in order to lead to thicker and greener grass. Over time, lawns can become compact, whether its from traffic or harsh weather, limiting this easy access of water and nutrients.

The solution is annual aeration. This practice breaks up the soil and enables the lawn to breath. Also, those small holes aeration creates can provide the perfect access for overseeding in thin, bare areas. Aeration and overseeding are key elements that shouldnt be forgotten on the journey to greener, thicker grass.

Greener Grass Step : Apply Iron

Iron is a key ingredient for making your lawn thick and green without giving you more work. While many people use nitrogen on their lawn, it not only makes your grass greener but also makes it grow faster. Iron helps you get your grass strong, but without the growth nitrogen adds. Both are necessary for a healthy green lawn.

Its ideal to apply iron on your grass in the spring and fall, when the temperatures are still cool. This applies to all types of grass.

However, cool-season grass like Kentucky bluegrass and fescue grass are especially receptive to iron. Youll see cool-season grass thriving with iron during the summer months when it doesnt actively grow.

Itll get back to growth in the fall season, and in the early spring.

How To Apply Iron To Your Lawn

Before you get started on applying iron to the grass, you have to pick the type of nutrients that work for you and your lawn. You can find iron in liquid, powder or granular form, of which we recommend granular for its easy application. You can also pick between organic and synthetic iron supplements for your grass.

These are some of the basics for applying iron to your lawn.

  • Water your lawn between 24 and 48 hours before the application of the fertilizer. The soil should be moist when fertilizing, but the grass dry.
  • Wait until the sun drops. Its never a good idea to use fertilizers on your lawn in the midday heat, because they may burn the grass.

Greener Grass Step : Fertilizing Using The Best Fertilizers

If you truly want the best results from your lawn, we do recommend investing in a quality fertilizer, such as Milorganite. You should also be sure which type of lawn you have, as this will affect how often you need to fertilize your lawn.

You should carry out a soil test to see what kind of nutrients are present. This will ensure the fertilizers include a balanced amount of nutrients, and in the quantities they state on the package.

There are also some products available to deal with weeds simultaneously, to find the best weed and feed available, see our post here.

With the best fertilizers, you also run a lower risk of doing harm to your lawn and staining your sidewalk.

    Is Organic Better?

Organic fertilizers tend to work better as a long-term solution, and its more environmentally friendly. Theyre the slow-release type, but they usually have more complete nutrients for your lawn.

They build up your lawn in a natural way, without the risks of staining your lawn or sidewalk. They do also contain nitrogen, so theyre not ideal if you dont want your grass to grow so fast.

Synthetic high-iron fertilizers are fast-releasing and affordable. Epsom salts can be used on your lawn to add magnesium and sulfur. If youre not careful with the amounts of synthetic fertilizer you apply on the grass, though, it may turn your lawn a grayish hue and your concrete driveway orange. You should carry out a soil test fairly regularly, to keep tabs on the state of things.

[How to Get a GREEN LAWN FAST] – 3 EASY TIPS for QUICK RESULTS

Turning your sprinkler on for just a few minutes a few times a week really wont do much to help your lawn. For a healthier lawn, learn to water your grass deeply and less often. If you water infrequently and deeply, the roots of your grass will start to grow deeper down into the soil. This helps your grass stay green during periods of drought or extremely hot weather. Experts recommend that you water your grass with 1 inch of water, once a week. This amount of course can vary depending on your local weather conditions, soil type, grass species, etc.

How do you know if youre watering your plants with 1 inch of water? You can use this simple test. Place a series of shallow containers throughout your lawn and turn your sprinklers on. Keep watering until you measure 1 inch of water in the majority of the containers.

This simple test will also help you determine if your sprinklers are watering your grass evenly. If the depth of the water in the containers varies widely, this may explain patches of drier grass in your yard. In this case youll need to adjust your sprinkler heads. Its also important that you dont over-water your grass.

Youll know when its time to water again when the first 3-4 inches of soil are dry to the touch. Use an electronic soil tester to test the soil moisture, or use a trowel or a screwdriver to open the soil and feel it with your finger. To help your grass retain even more water, you can use water absorbing polymers .

Have A Proper Lawn Mowing Routine

How To Make Your Lawn Green

If you want your lawn to be thicker and greener then the single most important thing you can do is to have a proper lawn mowing routine.

Lawns do grow at different speeds due to a number of factors including the type of soil, type of grass, local climate etc. so you shouldnt really base your mowing routine on a set time but you have to use your eyes and mow your lawn when you judge it needs to be mowed.

The height you should keep your lawn depends on the variety of grass you grow:

    • You should keep warm-season grass varieties such as bermudagrass and centipede grass at approximately 1-2 inches.
    • You should keep cool-season grass varieties such as Kentucky bluegrass and fine fescues at approximately 3-4 inches.

You should aim to cut your grass often as every time you mow your lawn it will actually stress and damage it but it is when the grass is recovering from it that healthy growth happens.

The more regularly you mow your lawn the thicker and greener it will become without doing anything else. Personally I tend to mow my lawn every weekend during the growing season and my lawn is thick and green.

    What Makes Grass Green

The green color of grass comes from chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is a pigment found in grass which use sunlight to transform water and carbon dioxide into nutrients the grass needs to survive.

The transformation process is called photosynthesis, and you know your lawn is performing this vital task properly when your grass is a deep shade of green.

In healthy grass, the chlorophyll pigment naturally absorbs wavelengths in both blue light and red but reflects light in green. This reflection is what makes grass appear green.

In lawns in poor condition, especially those lacking iron in the soil, chlorophyll production slows down, which causes yellowing, or completely ceases, and your grass dies.

    Variety Of Green Shades

Not all grass varieties reflect the same shade of green. Some are much more bright and vibrant or rich and deep in tone than others.

For a lawn with gorgeous green color, consider planting or overseeding with these grass varieties:

    • Kentucky bluegrass
    • Broadleaf herbicide
    • Sprinkler or hose

For green grass fast, fertilizer and iron supplements are the way to go. Be aware that overdoing fertilizer can also kill your grass, so take care to provide only the amount your lawn needs to rejuvenate its color and health.

    Does Grass Paint Look Fake

Realtors sometimes use grass paint to give homes a quick curb appeal boost, but I always assumed it would look a little fake. At least Im pretty sure I saw a few bad lawn paint jobs back when I was house shopping.

But I was really surprised by how well my lawn turned out. Looking at it, you cant tell that its painted.

The only way youd know it was dry would be if you gleefully ran up to it barefoot, expecting the softness of a fresh bed of grass and instead encountering the pain of a thousand needles under your feet.

Dont do that. Its definitely crunchy, dried out grass underneath the green. But it LOOKS so pretty!
