Generally, though, spring aerating is discouraged because the aeration holes provide a perfect spot for weed seeds to germinate. Weeds seeds are the first seeds to germinate in the spring, and aerating the lawn just stirs them up and gives them an ideal home.
If spring overseeding is the goal, slice seeding can be done, or seed can be sown and topdressed to provide adequate germination conditions.
Late spring aerating may be beneficial, however, if the ground is extremely compacted, or if there is excessively thin turf. Later in the spring is best, when weeds have established but before they flower and go to seed. This occurs around Memorial Day in many climates.
But the very best time to aerate is in the fall when the temperatures have cooled off, when the weed pressure is minimal, and when grass is actively growing.

Over time, little bits and pieces of grass die and gather just above the soil. This is called thatch. A little bit of thatch can be beneficial. It’s organic material that is broken down by microbes in the soil. But sometimes, thatch builds up too fast for natural processes to break it down. It forms a barrier, keeping moisture and air from going where your grass needs it. A half-inch or more of thatch can weaken your lawn. You have 2 ways to remove it: dethatching and aerating.

Its a great idea to overseed your lawn after aeration. The soil is decompacted for easy rooting, the thatch layer will be thinned to allow seeds to reach the soil, and the holes left by your aerator provide good cover for seeds. When Should I Aerate My Lawn
For those living in the rolling hills of the UK, the ideal time to aerate your lawn is spring or autumn. This is because these seasons usually allow for the most naturally moist soil, which is a crucial component needed for effective hole-setting.
Spring, when the grass has just started to grow again, is especially suitable for aeration, as this season gives grass ample opportunity to heal correctly. That said, the weather is fickle in the British Isles, and aeration is dependent on weather conditions more than anything else.
If the soil is soaked, then the holes will not allow water and air to pass through because the holes seal up more quickly. It wont do well to try aerating soil thats too dry either, which is why the natural moist of spring is so ideal.
When it comes to the frequency with which you should be aerating your lawn, that all depends on the grass itself. Newer lawns need more aeration because their root systems are less than mature, a process which is boosted by regular aeration. If you have a new non-established lawn, its prudent to aerate twice a year.
Harder clay soils also needed to be aerated at least annually because of the difficulty with which this type of soil absorbs air and water for its roots.
All other kinds of soil need aeration only once every three years, though be sure to keep an eye on your lawn, as unhealthy, growth-stunted grass is usually a sign that it needs aeration.

- Water running down from high areas is a sign that your lawn is not absorbing water.
