Q: Last fall I completely dethatched my lawn and had it aerated, seeded and fertilized. The results were fantastic. Is it necessary to dethatch every year? How do I determine when it is time to dethatch?
Answer: Most healthy fescue lawns require dethatching every four or five years, at most. Some thatch, a quarter inch or so, is good for the lawn. It contains micronutrients that are then slowly released into the soil. However, once thatch gets a half inch or thicker, it starts to cause problems. It can choke out the grass plants and prevent water from reaching the roots. Remember, in some climates thatch roofs are used to repel rainwater.
I prefer aeration every fall, or every other fall, instead of dethatching. In addition to loosening the soil and making holes for seed, water and fertilizer, good core aeration will pull up lots of thatch. In fact, by aerating every fall you may never need to dethatch again.
