99% of the United States corn crop is now GMO corn. Some people are concerned that there is a risk with genetically-modified crops. Because of this, corn meal gluten is not an OMRI-rated product. OMRI ratings are required for any products grown to be certified organic.

It is a natural product in that it is entirely made out of plant material. As its extracted from inside the corn kernel, its unlikely to be chemically-contaminated.

Gluten Cornmeal As Weed Killer

Researchers at Iowa State University discovered by accident that cornmeal gluten acts as an herbicide while they were doing disease research. They saw that corn gluten meal kept grass and other seeds, such as crabgrass, dandelions, and chickweed from sprouting.

It is important to note that cornmeal gluten is only effective against seeds, not plants that are mature, and is most effective with corn gluten having at least 60% proteins in it. For annual weeds that are growing, plain cornmeal products will not kill it. These weeds include:

However, cornmeal gluten will stop the seeds that these weeds shed in the summer so that the weeds will not increase. With consistent use of gluten meal products, these weeds will gradually decline.

Not All Corn Gluten Meal Is The Same

There are different qualities of corn gluten meal and the one that is a herbicide contains 60% protein. This product is always labeled as a pre-emergent herbicide.

The true corn gluten meal herbicide is expensive and so many people have tried a cheaper product called corn gluten feed, or distillers grain. These animal feed products may even be called corn gluten meal but they will not be labeled as a pre-emergent herbicide.

One reason corn gluten meal may be getting bad press is that gardeners are trying to use the feed products and then reporting they dont work. They dont work because they dont have a high enough protein level they are the wrong product.

Another common problem is that corn gluten meal needs to be applied at a heavy rate of 20 pounds per 1,000 sq ft and most home spreaders cant reach this level. If it is not applied thick enough, it wont be effective.

What Is Corn Gluten Meal

Like other fertilizers such as cottonseed meal, corn gluten meal is a byproduct. In this case, its a byproduct of manufacturing corn starch or oils to produce ethanol. It is a residue left behind by wet-milling.

A natural source of protein found in the endosperm of the corn kernel, corn gluten is a good nitrogen source. It averages at 60% protein for the wet-milled gluten. Other processing forms can render a 20% protein version which isnt as effective.

On average, a 60% protein variation will result in a slow nitrogen release of 10%. As the corn gluten meal breaks down, it enriches the soil and adds organic matter.

It should be noted that this isnt the same as the corn meal we make cornbread from. Corn meal is ground dried corn. While it contains part of the endosperm, its lower in protein. Corn gluten meal is mostly endosperm, the food which corn plants rely on to germinate.

How Does Corn Gluten Meal Kill Weeds

Corn gluten meal doesnt really kill weeds, but it will prevent weed seeds from germinating properly. Shortly after weeds germinate in a lawn, the young weeds send out secondary feeder roots that are important for drawing vital nutrients from the soil. The corn gluten meal, which is a by-product of corn syrup production, damages the feeder roots of many young plants. The end result is that many of the weeds will germinate, but because the corn gluten meal damages the weeds secondary feeder root, they will not develop into an adult weed. Corn gluten meal has been proven to control many types of weeds including: dandelions, crabgrass, thistle, clover, plantain, lambs ears, etc.

As a Fertilizer it will add nitrogen to the lawn to green it up. It is not considered a slow release fertilizer, it greens up fast and fades away fast too.

As a Crabgrass Management tool, it needs to be a registered product for this purpose. It must be applied at double the rate to get any benefit for crabgrass prevention. Dr. Christians and other studies show it takes 2-3 years of applications to get to about 50-60% control of crabgrass. THATS REALLY LOW, and not normally noticeable since crabgrass plants can easily put out hundreds of seeds per individual plant, every year!

At double the rate, it can also cause surge growth, that fades quick as the nitrogen source depletes which is very stressful on a lawn in the long term.

Its main benefit is that it fertilizes the grass, and grass that is fertilized well, will grow a thick healthy stand of grass that prevents weed growth naturally. So fertilize, but if I were you, use a more balanced slow release fertilizer that has a wider spectrum of benefits than just colour. Its a very expensive source of fertilizer for what it does! There is much better value out there.

Using Cornmeal Gluten To Kill Ants

Cornmeal gluten is also a popular method to control ants. Pouring it wherever you see ants traveling is the best option. They will pick up the gluten and take it to the nest where they will feed on it. Since the ants cannot digest this cornmeal product, they will starve to death. It may take up to a week or so before you see your ant population dwindling.

Tip: If you have large areas to cover, you can try a spray form for ease of application. Apply every four weeks, or after heavy rains, during the growing season to maintain effectiveness.

Corn Meal will still be very difficult to find in Australia, which is mainly due to our slow uptake of using organic lawn and gardening products. But the more we all ask for it from resellers and retailers, the more it will become readily known and available to us all. If the supermarket-style hardware shops and other retailers dont stock Corn Meal, then its high time that we all start putting some pressure onto them to begin to stock these organic products as an alternative to the chemical options.

Corn gluten is a byproduct of corn milling that has historically been used as a supplement in animal feed. This product was discovered to kill weeds before they establish. Corn gluten does not prevent weed seed from germinating but inhibits the young weed plants from developing roots.

The newly germinated weed plants are thus left without a mechanism to absorb water and they quickly die of dehydration. The application or this organic weed killer has to be timed just when the weeds have germinated.

How To Use Corn Gluten Meal

To use corn gluten meals natural herbicidal effect, it takes more than you would expect. A basic estimate is 20 pounds of meal for 1,000 square feet. That quantity increases if the soil is poor.

For lawns, you can use a spreader to evenly spread the meal across the entire lawns surface. This is especially easy with the pelletized and granular forms available.

Be cautious of using corn gluten meal in garden use if you plan on direct-sowing seeds. That natural pre-emergence herbicide may prevent your seeds from developing.

As a fertilizer in the garden, wait until your plants are already established. You can then lightly work it into the surface or top-dress with it, as desired.

In the fall, work some corn gluten through your soil and spread another layer overtop. This will prevent winter and early spring weeds and start breaking down in the soil. If you plan on growing winter crops, be sure theyre already established first!

Wait to fertilize with corn gluten fertilizer until any seeds youve planted have sprouted and formed their first pair of true leaves. This ensures that theyve already started to develop healthy roots. In the case of grass seed, wait until theres at least 1.5 of grass height before fertilizing.

While some people do mix corn gluten in water and make a corn gluten fertilizer tea, it is less effective that way. For a light weekly application of fertilizer, this is useful, but much less potent than the meal is.
