Pulling Weeds By Hand

The best way, though the hardest, is to pull the weeds by hand. Keep in mind that for this method to be effective, you should remove the whole plant with its roots. For weeds with shallow roots, you can just hold the plant by its stem and pull gently. For those with deeper roots, such as dandelions, you need to take some extra care when removing them. You can use a small hoe to dig in the soil around the stem to loosen the soil, then get a firm grasp of the stem and pull. You may need to dig deeper and try pulling several times until you get the entire root out successfully.

Pulling Out Weeds Vs Spraying

Digging up weeds removes the entire weed, roots and all, from the ground. Depending on the location and type of weed, this may require different tools. By taking out the whole plant, you are assured that that same plant will not regrow in the same location. Individually removing weeds also ensures that your existing plants are not damaged or accidentally killed in the process. The unsightly weeds are completely removed from your garden, providing you immediate gratification. The best way to dig up weeds is to wait until after a rain, when the soil is still wet and soft enough to pull the weeds out.

Mowing Properly And Regularly

Removing Lawn Weeds

Your grass should be cut every week during the Spring, and at least every ten days during the summer. Mulching the grass back into the lawn helps spread grass seed and increase turf thickness. Your blades need to be sharpened yearly and never cut the grass more than 1/3 of its total length. Every time your mow your lawn, you also mow the weeds which takes them out of the picture of a couple days, but dont forget that the roots are still alive and well and they will try to grow back.

Annual Broadleaf Lawn Weeds

Carpetweed

Some are small with little white flowers and others dont bear flowers. These summer annuals spread through seeds and will germinate quickly as the soil beings to warm up.

Control Methods You can pull these weeds out by hand or with tools. When caught early on, hand pulling can be very effective, but as the infestation of carpetweed in your lawn grows its best to use chemical treatments to eliminate it.

When maintaining your lawn keep the grass dense and healthy. Herbicidal treatments to use for Carpetweed are 2,4-D, MCPP, Dicamba or Triclopyr. I recommend the Southern Ag herbicide for Carpetweed.

Make sure to read the instructions carefully and follow all safety procedures.

Common Lespedeza

Japanese clover is very wiry and almost bush-like when present in a grouping of weeds. They grow low to the ground and will quickly crowd out and smother grass if left untreated.

Dark leaves are met with three smooth leaves and a singular pink and purple flower. These lawn weeds grow in under-fertilized, poor, soil.

Control Methods Hand pulling and weeding tools can be utilized to catch an early onslaught of Japanese Clover in your lawn. It can be difficult to pull, so I recommend waiting until the soil is moist.

When To Water Lawn After Fertilizer Application

Generally speaking, you shouldnt water your lawn after applying weed and feed, because the water can disperse the substance disproportionally. Rain and watering may cause that you have a lot of weed and feed granules on one spot and not enough on the other, and like that, you wont have good results. Thus, check the weather forecast to be sure that after fertilization, it wont rain for at least 48 hours after youve used lawn weed and feed.

Why Do People Want A Weed Free Lawn

There are two main reasons why people want to see green grass and not much else on their turf. The first is an emotion reason: they look bad. People dont want yellow heads sticking everywhere from dandelions, painful shrubs growing up from thistles, bunchy short plants growing like clover, and invasive purple eyesores like creeping bellflower spouting up everywhere. Weeds are essentially like acne natural yet unwanted.

The second reason to go weed free is that weeds are invasive by nature they want to grow as much at possible at the expense of other plants around it. Its a dawg eat dawg world when it comes to lawn weeds. Whenever a drop of water, nutrient, or beam of sunlight comes down its a big competition for who gets it. Your grass roots are going head to head with the roots of weeds. If you let nature do its course, unfortunately the weeds will win. They are a yearly problem for millions of homeowners everywhere. Weeds also reproduce much more rapidly than your lawn. A single dandelion can produce up to 200 seeds, which is potential for 200 more dandelions. Your grass cannot thrive so long as weeds are there stealing nutrients from your turf. The only way to have flourishing grass is to minimize the potential for weeds and do it without harming your lawn.

How Do You Get Rid Of Dandelions

Dandelion seedheads may look pretty, but they’re a pain for gardeners

The thick taproots of the dandelion delve deep into the soil and cracks between paving slabs, making them tricky to remove. If tiny pieces of root remain after digging the soil, they’ll resprout and take over.

To get rid of dandelions, it’s best to dig them out with a garden fork, especially before the bright yellow daisy-like flowers turn into fluffy ‘clocks’ and release their airborne seeds. For larger areas, a plastic sheet with mulch on top will prevent dandelions from getting a foothold.

Using A Chemical Weeding Product

If there are too many weeds to remove manually or with a hoe, you can use a weed killer made of chemicals and spray the chemical directly on each weed. It’s not environment-friendly, so use only if it is absolutely necessary. Some, like Ortho’s Weed-B-Gon, kill many weeds including dandelions, crabgrass, and clover. This product does not damage the lawn. Or you can purchase the concentrate, mix it with water, then spray where needed.

After spraying, you can see results in a day or so. After they die, you’ll have remove them by hand, which is difficult, but much easier than pulling a live weed.

A downside of these chemicals is that they may not kill the weeds entirely. The chemical only kills what it touches, and if it was not sprayed sufficiently, the weed may not die, so make sure to cover all unwanted plants sufficiently.
