  • How Much Does It Cost To Level A Garden In The Uk

The cost to level a garden in the UK will depend on the size of the garden as well as the extent of the work is requires. If youre calling in a professional landscaper to level then build a patio, you might expect to pay around £1,800, including materials.

If a lumpy lawn is beyond rescue and its a question of preparing and laying a new lawn area, including the levelling work, then expect to pay around £1,200 including turf rolls.

More extensive levelling work will be part of a landscaping project, and the final garden landscaping costs will depend on the entire design, what you build in to the space including decking, patios, lawn areas, raised beds, fencing and so on. For a smaller garden, expect to pay from around £10,000, but for larger spaces and complex designs for sloping gardens, expect to pay £50,000 and more.

The Best Way To Level A Garden

The best way to level a garden depends on the gardens design, and how uneven or sloping the space is. You may just want to get rid of lumps and bumps in the lawn so it looks its best, is suitable for sitting or lying out on and so kids can play on it. A flat lawn is easy to mow, and rain will be absorbed evenly, making the grass healthier.

Alternatively, you may want to construct a patio or deck. If thats the case, youll need to start from a level surface to build your new garden feature.

Of course, your garden may be a sloping one, leaving you with space you cant easily use. If thats the case levelling is imperative if youre to create space for all sorts of garden activities, and to make tending the plot much more straightforward.

Measure The Area You’ll Be Sodding

Measure the area youll be sodding. Take careful measurements so that you dont pay for more sod than you need. Order roughly 5 percent extra , so youll have enough sod to cut and fit around curves. Purchase sod through a garden center or directly from a sod farm, if theres one near you. The supplier you purchase from should ask detailed questions about your lawn, including hardiness zone, sunlight vs. shade, how intensely youll use the grass and other specifics. These answers determine the types of grasses that will be in your sod. Make sure sod is delivered within 24 hours of being cut. Plan to lay it the day its delivered.

For holes in the lawn, my advice would be to use a sharp knife of a lawn edger to remove the turf. Make sure you have a good 2-3 cm of soil on the back of your turf and set it to one side. Fill the hole with soil from elsewhere in the garden. If you use imported topsoil youll find that the grass will always look different where youve made the repair. Be sure to press the new topsoil down firmly. You dont want it to settle and sink in the next few weeks!

Replace the turf carefully, ensuring that it is nice and level. Keep it well watered for 3-4 weeks while the grasses regrow their roots.

Place Small Pieces In The Middle

As you come up with small pieces of turf, tuck them into the center of the lawn area, so that all edges are touching other sod pieces. If you use small pieces to fill in along the edges of a lawn, theyre more prone to drying out and more likely to shrink and even die.

Removing Turf For An Entire Re

If your lawn resembles a moonscape then it would be best to remove all the turf with a turf cutter and lay fresh topsoil across the whole lawn.

If the turf is in good shape cut strips and roll them to conserve their moisture and water the rolls overnight to keep the grass alive.

Spread topsoil evenly over the garden and rake it level. Use boards to press it flat and water with a hosepipe to release air pockets. Lay the second layer of topsoil and repeat, then re-lay the turf or start afresh with grass seed.

For best results keep these tips in mind:

    • The best time to level your yard is during the dry season. If done during a rainy season there is a good chance for soil erosion
    • Proper backfill at the foundation is very important. If the soil is too close to the wall cladding then you risk termites getting into your house
    • Any soil removed from the lawn can be reused while grading

    Filling Up Gaps And Depressions

It is also possible that one may encounter sudden gaps and depressions along the yard. In order to fill them up, dig the gap or depression area into one single ditch and then fill it up with coarse rocks, gravel and then finer soil. Next level up the filled up area so that its upper surface merges properly with the remaining area.

You will have to use an Inclinometer, then re-level the entire area, plenty of times so that it becomes uniform and integrated with the remaining yard.

Levelling Deep Low Spots On Your Lawn

For the areas that have sunk more than 2cm deep a different method to level your lawn will be required. For this you will need a squared-off shovel. Using the shovel, slice into the centre and beyond the edges of the bump or hollow in a cross shape. Try to keep the cut as even as possible to make it easier to lift without breaking.

Cut to about 4-5cm deep, then slide the shovel underneath to cut each section of the cross horizontally, keeping the shovel as flat as possible to maintain an even thickness of soil. This is where it is essential that the soil is not too dry, as it will crumble when moved. Gently peel back the edges of the turf until you can lay them flat without breaking.

For levelling a bump in the lawn, dig out the excess soil until level with the surrounding area, tread down and fold the flaps of turf back over.

To fill a hollow, use a garden fork to turn over the soil to about 5cm deep, removing any large stones and breaking down any large clumps. Tread down to compact the soil to reduce the chance of further sinking afterwards.

Fill the hole with your top dressing mixture until level with the surrounding area, then rake over to break the soil down before folding the flaps of turf back over.

Leveling Minor Unevenness With A Topdressing

If you only have minor uneven lawn areas where the depressions arent too deep, you can solve the problem by using a top dressing soil mixture. This type of lawn-leveling repair is the least labor-intensive and costly.

  • Using a wheelbarrow, create a top dressingsoil mixture that will support your turfgrass growth by mixing equal parts of compost, sand and topsoil.
  • Apply ½-inch of the soil mixture to the low areas in your yard. Ms. Covington states, Its important not to apply the top dressing any deeper or you can suffocate the grass. This can be a gradual repair approach that may require repeating.
  • Using a garden rake, smooth the soil mixture evenly over the low spots.
  • Next, use a push broom to work the top dressing into the area and grass blades.
  • If grass was originally growing in the low areas, you should begin to see new grass growth popping up through the soil mixture. If the area still is a bit low, repeat the above steps until the turfgrass is level.
  • Expert Tip: If the uneven areas lacked grass growth before you applied the top dressing, you need to overseed the area to promote additional turfgrass growth.

A yard is usually a piece of land that is attached to a house or a building. A yard has variable uses, like at times, it is used as a front porch or sometimes, animals like horses are let loose into the yard. Most of the yards are grass yards and are located outside that building. However, some like the courtyards, are located within the house. The courtyard is usually located at the midpoint of the house and is surrounded from all sides by the different wings of the house. The courtyard of almost all the houses will have a solid flooring and is rarely made up of grass or soil. The yards that are made up of soil are rarely seen, except in tropical and sub tropical regions, where they usually adjoin the houses.
