It is best to attempt to treat weeds before tilling the soil for a vegetable garden. Tilling can break up and spread weed seed and perennial grass rhizomes throughout the garden plot. Some methods used to remove weeds in the vegetable garden include hand pulling, mulch, and post-emergent herbicides.
Cultural Control: Hand pulling bahiagrass may be a practical choice for small garden plots. If hand pulling, be sure to work when the soil is moist so that the bahiagrass roots can easily be removed from the soil.
Organic mulch can be used in the garden to help suppress bahiagrass development. Before laying the mulch, apply a layer of 6 to 8 wet newspaper sheets to act as a weed barrier. The newspaper layer will prevent weed development by blocking light to the weeds underneath and prevent their growth. Best of all, the newspaper should decompose before next spring. To prevent low oxygen levels in the root zone, keep organic mulch levels at a maximum of 3-inches deep. There are a few ways you can approach transforming your grass area into an edible garden. Some folks choose to completely remove their grass before changing the landscape, like we eventually did. In other situations, it may be possible to simply build or plant on top of the grass, smothering it in place. Or, you may choose to do half-and-half. For example, remove the grass only where a future raised garden bed will sit, but leave grass in the pathways between the beds.
Does Fusilade Ii Kill Bermuda Grass
This herbicide is great for killing Bermuda grass without killing zoysia grass in your turf. Fusilade II should be used with a high-quality non-ionic surfactant and applied once every month at a reduced rate.
According to a study done by the University of Georgia, repeating this process for two successive years will result in a significant reduction of Bermuda grass cover . Meanwhile, your zoysia grass cover will be enhanced by up to 20% within the same period.

Glyphosate: A non-selective herbicide, such as glyphosate, can be used for spot treatments around ornamental plants but should be used with caution. Do not allow glyphosate spray mist to contact ornamental foliage or stems, as severe injury will occur. A cardboard shield may be used to prevent glyphosate spray from drifting to nearby ornamentals. Sethoxydim: Sethoxydim is a selective herbicide that can be applied safely in landscape beds containing most landscape plants but check the product label for a listing of tolerant plant materials. Sethoxydim will only control grass weeds however, do not allow sethoxydim to contact ornamental grasses. A 2.5% solution should be applied before bahiagrass reaches 4 inches tall. Bermuda grass is a popular choice for lawns in the hotter regions of the West for very good reasons. It loves heat, its remarkably resistant to wear and tear, and, as turf goes, its relatively drought tolerant.
But its admirable vigor also makes this turf a challenge to remove if you decide to replace it with something else. Bermuda grass spreads by underground stems and aboveground runners . It seeds pretty aggressively too.
Because its so tough and persistent, most professionals and homeowners use an herbicide to kill it.
They spray, strip off the dying sod, irrigate to generate growth of any surviving rhizomes, and then repeat the process at least once .
But if you dont want to use glyphosateand the herbicide is not as benign as originally believedyou do have other options. Three professionals weigh in.

Strip it.
Dell swears by this method to get rid of all kinds of lawn, including Bermuda. He strips off the grass, covers the soil beneath it with three layers of cardboard, tops the cardboard with 4 or 5 inches of mulch, then lets the whole thing sit for six months.
But he warns: Once youve gotten rid of the Bermuda, dont assume your job is over. Bermuda seeds are in the air, he says. It may be one year or it may be five, but theyll be back. So be vigilant.

Use A Chemical Treatment
Use a post-emergent herbicide labeled for crabgrass. If you already have a crabgrass infestation, then a chemical treatment may be necessary to tackle the problem. All lawn weed herbicides are not made the same. Some will kill your regular grass and other common weeds. Make sure you read the label. Herbicides made to target crabgrass will be in a liquid form. It is meant for spot treatment and not for a broadcast application. Follow the directions on the label of the product for proper safety protocol.
When To Kill Grass In Garden Beds
Most grasses spread by underground roots , as well as by dropping seeds. So efforts to eliminate grass in the garden become harder if you allow the plants to mature. Each plant can scatter hundreds of seeds in a garden bed. Thus, grass in the garden should be dealt with whenever you see it, ideally early in the growing season before seed heads appear.

Tips For Preventing Grass In Flower Beds

Deep Mulch & Sheet Mulching
One very organic and sustainable way to kill grass is to cover it with a deep natural mulch material. For example, by mulching over the top of grass with leaves, wood chips, compost, leaf mold, bark, pine needles, and/or paper material. In order for mulch to successfully kill grass, it needs to be several inches deep enough to block out sunlight, provide decent weight, and effectively smother the grass. Fluffy material like leaves will compact and break down with time, so start out with even more on top a couple feet even.
One of the best ways to kill grass with deep mulch is to apply a thick layer of paper material over the grass first with mulch on top. For instance, use newspaper , unwaxed cardboard, or a couple layers of bulk unbleached masking paper. You know, the stuff you can buy in a huge roll?
After you lay paper material over the grass, wet it thoroughly. Then add mulch of choice on top and wet that material too. Paper or no paper, spray down the deep mulch material every so often . Damp conditions accelerate decomposition, and will also help prevent fluffy mulch material like leaves from blowing away in windy conditions.

Do You Have To Pull Weeds After Spraying
You will see results in a day or two after spraying. After the grass and weeds die, you’ll have remove them by hand, which is difficult, but much easier than pulling a live weed. A downside of these chemicals is that they may not kill the weeds entirely.
The root of the plant may still be alive so as you are pulling up the dead weeds try to pull up the root as well.

I had the same stuff growing. Once my sod germinated & after about 5 mowing occasions, I applied a weed & feed. I used Vigoro, which seemed to have done the trick. You can purchase it at Home Depot.

I have the same problem and am putting round up on it now. There is a landscape company that says there is a chemical that just kills bermuda grass and clover, but of course, they charge you a fortune. I dont know what it is and dont know any one either who knows. I am in the midst of killing all the bermuda I can. Then I am planning on seeding keeping good and watered then must fertilize to make grass good a strong. If grass is thick the bermuda grass will get weak because it likes sun not shade.
