The Benefits Of Homemade Solutions

How To Spray Weeds In The Lawn for Beginners | DIY Lawn Tips Part 2

For almost any gardener, weeds can feel like the bane of existence. They are a blemish on an otherwise perfect lawn or garden, and worse, theyre persistent. The most effective method to keep them at bay is manual weeding, but its a time consuming project and a major pain in the neck. Nobody likes to spend hour after hour doubled over in their garden in the hot sun.

Herbicide can be an attractive alternative, allowing you to kill weeds by simply spraying a product from a bottle. But what if youre hesitant to use such hardcore chemicals? What if you want to kill your weeds without having to make a trip to the store? Is there a way to make an effective weed killer right from home?

Luckily, there is. With a few basic ingredients you probably have in your kitchen, you can kill those weeds in no time. Here we have a basic explanation of how to make homemade weed killer.

How Long Does Weed Killer Work

While certain weeds are easy to control and can be knocked back with just one treatment, other weeds are a bit more persistent and may require multiple treatments. While we wish we could say that once we treat weeds, theyll never return, thats simply not the case.

Some of the more aggressive weeds, particularly grassy weeds do continue to return and require ongoing treatment. Fortunately, when youre on a comprehensive lawn care program, the goal is to stay ahead of these weeds and to use pre-emergent as effectively as possible. Then, we only have to spot-treat the breakthrough that pops up with post-emergent, selective materials.

When And How To Fertilize New Grass

If youre starting a new lawn from seed, sod or plugs or youre doing bare lawn spot repair a starter fertilizer helps grass get the perfect start. Unlike established lawns, new grass benefits from extra phosphorus, an essential plant nutrient that supports strong, deep roots. Some states only allow phosphorus-containing lawn fertilizers on new grass, so check with your county extension office if youre unsure.

On fertilizer products, phosphorus is the middle number in the N-P-K ratio usually 0 in normal lawn fertilizers. But with Pennington UltraGreen Starter Fertilizer 22-23-4, you get an ideal ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, plus other essential lawn nutrients, including iron for deep green color. This premium fertilizer blend starts feeding new grass immediately and keeps feeding it for up to three months.

Always follow guidelines for the best time to plant grass seed for your region and grass type, then fertilize accordingly. For seed or plugs, apply fertilizer with a regular lawn spreader before you plant. If youre starting a lawn with sod, fertilize after your sod is in place.

With any new lawn area, avoid using crabgrass preventer fertilizers or weed & feed fertilizers within four weeks before planting time. After seeding, wait until your new grass gets established and youve mowed your lawn at least three times.

Weed & feed fertilizers kill tough weeds and feed your lawn.

Why Dont Granular Herbicides Work On Established Weeds

Granular post-emergent herbicides are herbicides you apply to established weeds. Granular post emergent herbicides are commonly found in products like Weed & Feed, or other 4 step programs that fertilizer companies promote.

Under perfect conditions these products sometimes work. But perfect conditions are hard to come by.

For starters the lawn needs to be a little wet to get the granular herbicide to stick to the weed leaves. Even then, most of the herbicide ends up bouncing off the weed leaves.

If you are lucky enough to get the correct moisture for the herbicide to stick to the weeds leaves, you have to wish for some additional luck that you dont get any rain for at least 24 hours. Otherwise the herbicide will wash off the leaves and this will all be for nothing.

Also, broadcasting a post-emergent herbicide over your entire lawn is a waste. Chances are there are just some specific areas that require herbicide so I recommend spot treating those problem areas instead of putting expensive chemicals over your entire lawn.

How To Prevent Weeds

When it comes to tackling weeds, the best defense is a good offense. You should always take these steps to keep your grass hardy and robust, reducing the chances of weeds taking over.

  • Water deeply and infrequentlyIf you want your grass to have strong, deep roots, you need to water deeply and infrequently instead of choosing shallow, daily watering. With deep, sturdy roots, your grass can grow nice and thick and compete with weeds that may try to grow.
  • Mow highWeeds need sunlight to grow. If you let your grass blades grow taller by setting your lawn mower to the first or second highest setting, the grass will grow tall enough to cast shade on any weed seeds, preventing them from sprouting.
  • Feed regularlyStressed lawns are more susceptible to being crowded by weeds. Feeding regularly will keep your lawn lush and make it less hospitable to enterprising weeds.

When To Spray Weed Killer On Lawn

When applying weed killer to lawns, the best time to do it is when the grass is actively growing, unless the goal is to stop weeds from developing in the first place. In that situation, you need to use a pre-emergence weed killer before the weeds start growing so that you can destroy them before they ever start.

Spring is the period of year that is ideal for using weed killer, followed closely by Fall. What is a weed?

Weeds are plants that are growing where theyre not wanted. Weeds can take many forms and can vary depending on where they grow. By this definition something we see as a weed may be perfectly fine for others.

For some lawn owners as long as its green its fine is a common statement. But consider this for a moment, most broadleaf weeds are annuals which only grow for part of the year and then set seed. Whilst in small numbers the lawn will cover over these small spots as they die out but as they grow in numbers through seeding the lawn cant fill in these spots and suddenly your lawn is bare, when it isnt covered in weeds.

Weeds are very easily dispersed, so are difficult to eradicate completely. A longer lawn, with a dense growth habit helps in outperforming weeds, while an aerated soil is a much better option than a compacted soil.

Why you need to draw your line early?

In Australia our most common weeds like Bindii and dandelion are Winter annuals, this means they germinate in the soil from around April-June and start setting seeds in mid-Spring.

Should You Pull Weeds After You Spray Them

Weed Spraying in minneapolis Lawn

You should pull weeds after you spray them to prevent them from dropping seeds. Remove one weed at a time to ensure you dont rip off the stems or leaves. Grab the weed by its roots and firmly pull it upward. Once the roots are removed, the weeds cant grow back.

While this technique almost always gets the job done, it varies between weeds. If you have to remove large weeds, its best to use a weed eater to cut them down to size. You can also use a scythe to cut them low to the grass. Either way, you dont want them to be too low to remove the roots.

Unfortunately, theres no avoiding the two most common options:

  • Removing the weeds by the roots with gloves.

What To Do After Spraying Weeds

After spraying weeds, you should wait a couple of days, then remove them by hand. Mowing them will prevent them from dropping seeds, but the weeds can grow back if the roots are intact. You can also till the soil to rip out the weeds roots, then shovel them out.

Heres what you should know about spraying the weeds:

  • Dont water the yard for the next two days. Sprinklers and garden hoses will dilute or remove the spray, preventing it from getting rid of the weeds. Furthermore, it can make the spray leak into nearby grass and other plants, causing them to dry out and lose their roots.
  • Make sure you use the correct herbicide You dont want to harm the grass. Some herbicides are made to remove all plants, regardless of if you want them in your yard or not. Before you worry about how long you should let weeds sit after spraying them, you should consider using an herbicide that doesnt target grass.
  • Remove the weeds by hand before mowing the yard or using a weed eater. Much like removing straw from new grass, you have to let the plants work their magic for a little while. If you mow or trim them, the roots can spread seeds and keep growing more weeds.
  • Keep everything off of the weeds, including people and pets. Not only will it spread the herbicide to nearby plants, but it can also cause irritation. Walking on the weeds can bring the spray into your house, which will damage the carpet or flooring.
