Weather And Pesticide Use In Gardens

How to Use Scotts® Turf Builder® SummerGuard® Lawn Food with Insect Control

Moisture is a conductor for pesticides. It is mixed in concentrates to make a useful spray and it washes pesticides down into plants where secretive insects live. However, it can be dangerous to spray where running streams may carry toxins down to animals and fish and then linger in the water table, poisoning the area permanently.

This is why it is important not to apply pesticides just before rain. Pesticides leach through soil to the water table and downstream bodies of water. They can contaminate entire habitats, rendering them useless for the denizens of the area.

The best time to use a pesticide is when the soil is moderately dry and no rain is expected, on a cloudy day when temperatures are moderate. Never apply pesticide when there is wind to prevent the chemical from drifting to non-target areas.

The spring pre-emergent herbicides penetrate the top two inches of the soil and form a protective barrier.

When the springtime comes and the ground heats up, this barrier will prevent the growth of weeds. Essentially, an efficient spring pre-emergent will kill the weeds before they appear above ground.

Tips And Tricks For Safe And Effective Use

How to Use Spectracide® Triazicide® Insect Killer For Lawns Granules

Choose a suitable time of day

The best time of day to apply a lawn insect killer treatment is in the early morning or evening. If you apply the product in the middle of the day, it may evaporate in the sun which will make the treatment far less effective.

Take weather conditions into consideration

As mentioned above, applying your treatment under the blazing midday sun will cause it to evaporate before it has a chance to take effect.

Another weather condition that can sabotage your lawn insect-killing efforts is heavy rainfall, which will wash away the product before it can work. Therefore, the best time to apply a lawn insect killer is right after a heavy rainfall.

Mow the lawn first

Cutting the grass on your lawn before you apply your insect killer will give pest insects fewer places to hide. This ensures maximum contact of the product with your target pests and, therefore, more effective treatment.

Mowing the lawn before you apply your pesticide will also help to displace bees, butterflies, ladybugs, and other beneficial insect species so they arent harmed by the treatment.

Keep people and pets out of recently treated areas

Many insect lawn killers contain ingredients that are toxic to humans and animals, and which may cause skin and eye irritation. Always keep people and pets out of treated areas until the product has had a chance to dry.

When To Apply Grub Control

Grub damage starts to become evident in around May when theres increased activity following the feeding program that you started in early spring. It is important to know when to apply grub control in order to prevent damage to your grass.

The best time to apply grub control is between early spring and late summer when theres increased grub worm activity in your lawn. For grub preventers, apply between June and July just before they hatch while for grub killers, apply the treatment from spring when you see signs of grass damage.

June bugs, billbugs, and European chafers usually lay their eggs in lawns and gardens. As soon as they hatch, they develop into grubworms and start eating the grass roots throughout the warm seasons.

Youll notice signs of dead patches of grass any time from early spring to mid summer when the damage stops due to the grubs having developed into pupae and adults.

So, throughout this life cycle of Japanese beetles and European chafers, what is the best time to treat for grubs with a preventer or a killer?

Its expensive but effective. Its also got some residual activity against grubs and other insects but we dont really buy it just for that reason alone. As a preventative, its super expensive and wont last as long as the other preventative options. But as a curative, this product is VERY effective, quickly. At higher rates, its absolutely an excellent choice against resistant chinch bugs and armyworms too, better than Dylox. Water it in.
