Our lawns are generally home to cool-season grasses, so that means the warmer but still cool temperatures of the spring will be a prime time for growth. Two fertilization treatments are ideal over the course of spring, one being in early-to-mid spring and the second occurring in late spring. What time of year is best to fertilize your lawn depends on what type of grass you have, cool-season or warm-season. Nonetheless, there’s no one “right” fertilizer schedule. Different people have success doing it in slightly different ways. All that can be suggested is a typical schedule favored by many.

Should You Fertilize Your Lawn
There are many things to consider before answering this question. Not everyone’s goals and circumstances are the same. So the answer will vary from individual to individual.
If you want a great-looking lawn, and if you have the time, energy, and money to achieve that objective, then the answer is unequivocally yes. Proper fertilization is one factor that can make one lawn in the neighborhood stand out above the rest. Which brings us to the question, How often should you fertilize your lawn? Early Spring Lawn Care
Early spring is the time to think about the best way to help a winter-weary lawn recover and prepare for summers heat. Some simple steps now can help assure a healthy, thick, green lawn next summer.
If crabgrass was a problem last year, its likely to be a problem this year unless you were able to thicken up the lawn last year. Many crabgrass preventers are available with active ingredients including pendimethalin, orzalin + benefin, prodiamine, and others. Follow all label directions to be sure the products are effective. All granule products must be watered-in to be effective. Crabgrass preventer should be applied before crabgrass germinates. Since crabgrass germination usually occurs shortly after Forsynthia bushes have finished blooming, apply the products when Forsynthia bushes are in bloom in your area.
Unless the lawn has several bare areas and is thin, wait until Memorial Day to fertilize. Too much fertilizer in the spring will cause the plants to make leaves instead of roots and without good roots, the lawn suffers more from summer drought. However, if the lawn is very thin, a dose of fertilizer will help it fill in and crowd out weeds.

Of particular concern are the weed-and-feed products that combine fertilizer with other weed-killer chemicals. A major problem with these products is that the proper timing for feeding a lawn is generally different from the ideal time for killing weeds. Applying combination products generally means that excess chemical is likely to run off into local water supplies. The herbicide normally found in these products is a powdered formulation that contains 2,4-D, mecoprop, and dicambaall chemicals known to cause health and environmental problems.
If you must use chemicals, the argument goes, it is much better to apply a pure weedkiller in conservative doses at the optimal time for weed control and pure fertilizers at the ideal time for feeding the various turfgrasses.
The environmental problems with weed-and-feed products are so well documented that some countries have banned their use. In Canada, for example, weed-and-feed lawn care products have been banned since 2010. In the U.S., scattered jurisdictions have also banned these products.

How To Fertilize Your Lawn In The Fall
Approach your fall fertilizer application just as you would any other. Follow the coverage recommendation for the chosen product. Its always a good idea to split the application in half and then make two passes in different directions. For example: if your fall fertilizer bag says it will cover 5,000 square feet, find the setting on your spreader for 10,000 square feet . This will close the spreader gate allowing only one-half the recommended rate to flow through. Then make two consecutive passes at this spreader setting. This will apply the total recommended amount using two passes instead of one. This ensures even, uniform coverage, reducing the risk of missing parts of your lawn.
After youve finished your fall fertilizer application, make sure you thoroughly wash your spreader. This removes any remaining fertilizer residue that can corrode spreader components over the winter. Refer to your owners manual for additional recommended maintenance before winter storage.

What Fertilizer To Use In The Fall
The answer here depends on local ordinances or state laws. Some states do not allow the use of lawn fertilizers that contain phosphorus . Even though phosphorus is critical for root growth during seed and sod establishment and in the fall to assist in root redevelopment, many soils naturally contain phosphorus so its not necessary to apply more.
If you live in a phosphorus-free community, use fertilizers containing readily available nitrogen sources and a fertilizer higher in potassium . This will properly feed your lawn going into winter. Good numbers would be 24-0-12 or 21-0-21.
If you live in a municipality or state where fertilizers containing phosphorus are allowed, this can add another layer of plant health protection to prepare your lawn for a harsh winter. A good example would be 24-5-10 or 20-5-20. A lawn starter fertilizer, such as a 14-14-14 or 12-24-12 would also work.
Liquid or soluble fertilizers containing similar NPK ratios can also be used. However, understand that recommended application rates of sprayable lawn fertilizers will deliver fewer nutrients per application compared to granular products. But, using a hose-end sprayer to apply a fall fertilizer is still an acceptable method of application. You may have to apply two applications a couple of weeks apart to realize its full benefit.
Improved Grass Seed Germination
If you are going to reseed your lawn, aerating beforehand is key. As mentioned earlier, when soil plugs are removed it allows the seeds to germinate more easily and establish a strong root system. This is because new grass seed needs to be in contact with the soil to maximize seed germination.
Be sure to ask your landscaping company if they aerate before overseeding. If they dont, be sure to contact a few other landscapers to see if you can find someone that does. Lawn establishment can be expensive, so be sure to hire a team that will do the job correctly. It can be very frustrating to have to re-seed your lawn multiple times because the job wasnt done properly the first time.

When To Fertilizer Your Lawn In The Fall
The best time to apply your last fertilizer application is between August 15 and October 1. Ideally, your last lawn feeding should take place six to eight weeks before the average first frost in your area. So, if this date is Oct 10, like it is in Minneapolis/St. Paul, you should target August 15 to September 1 as your last application. If you live in Des Moines where the average first hard frost is October 27, then youd want to target your last fertilizer application six to eight weeks earlier, or between September 1 and Sept 15.
Planning fall fertilizer applications around average frost dates gives your lawn plenty of time to absorb all of the nutrients before it enters its dormant stage. Theres no need or benefit to carry over nutrients through the winter.
If you apply fertilizer too late, youre making your lawn stay up past its bedtime when all it wants to do is go to sleep for the year. Late fertilizing of cool-season lawn grasses will keep it actively growing when frigid weather, snow and ice usher in winter, potentially causing winter kill and disease issues next spring.

When Should I Reseed My Lawn In Wisconsin
The ideal time to plant grass seed in Wisconsin is late summer/early fall , depending on the weather. The soil is still warm, and cooler air temperatures are better for the seed to grow. If you are planting grass seeds in the spring, you will need to wait until the soil temperature is at least 70°F before you plant the seeds.
This is because the grasses will not be ready for planting until they have had a chance to warm up to the proper temperature. If you wait too long, your grass will be too cold and you wont be able to get the best results from your seedlings.

Thanks for the speedy response. I plan on mowing in a couple hour here once it warms up so thanks. I will be applying weed and feed afterwords. Should I skip the special winterizer fert all together since my weed and feed is so late?

If you fertilized your lawn the previous fall, especially late in the season, then the slow-release function of that fertilizer will help grass growth in the spring. Fertilizer manufacturers or lawn care companies may tell you to fertilize your lawn in early spring, but instead, consider the guidance by turf specialists and agronomists who say to hold off.
When cool-season grasses wake up in the spring, they enter a natural growth cycle when the root system begins growing and building carbohydrate reserves. Wait until the late spring just before the heat of summer begins and after the grass is thriving before you fertilize the lawn.
Feeding your lawn at this point prepares the grass for summer. During the hot summer months, the grass will begin to slow down carbohydrate production and begin to utilize the reserves. Adequately feeding 3/4 to 1 pound of slow-release nitrogen will allow the grass to rebuild its energy reserves and ward off the stresses of summer, such as drought, heat, traffic, disease, and insects.
