How To Cut Tree Roots
Cut tree roots with a sharp saw at a point where a side root grows downward, advises Lawn Care Academy. Remove grass and soil from around the root in sections using a sharp lawn spade so that the pieces can be easily replaced afterward. Sterilize the saw by wiping the blade with a rag soaked in rubbing alcohol. Saw through the root, preferably just beyond the point where a secondary root grows downward from it. If a side root isn’t growing in a convenient spot, cut through the root at the safest distance from the trunk. Pull up the remainder of the root, and replace the sections of soil and lawn. You may have to fill in gaps with extra soil and reseed any bare spots. Water the tree well, and spread a 2-inch layer of loose mulch over the entire root area within the tree’s dripline.
