Where It All Began

The Best Garden Tractors Ever Made – Featuring the X738, X595 and more

In 1963, John Deere first broke into the lawn tractor market by introducing the model 110. The John Deere 110 had a 4-stroke petrol-fueled engine with 7 horsepower.

At the time, lawn mowing was becoming a much more popular leisure activity. This prompted John Deere to dive into the marketplace by offering many similar features and implements that the bigger farming tractors incorporated. The 110 was a big hit, likely because of the impressive design and futuristic features.

Who Makes John Deere Riding Lawn Mowers

John Deere was the founder and president of the company. He was an American inventor and manufacturer of agricultural equipment. In 1837, he started a company which is now known as an international powerhouse.

The story of John Deere, who developed the first self-cleaning steel plow with commercial success, closely resembles the colonization and development of the Midwestern United States.

Deere was born on February 7, 1804, in Rutland, Vermont, as the third son of William Rinold Deere and Sarah Yates Deere. In 1805, the family moved to Middlebury, Vermont, where William established dealerships. In 1808 he embarked on a ship to England, hoping to regain an inheritance and make life more comfortable for his family. He was never heard again and probably died at sea.

John Deere was raised by a low-income mother. His education was probably rudimentary and limited to the general schools in Vermont. At the age of 17, he became an apprentice and learned the blacksmithing trade, which he practiced at various locations in Vermont.

In 1836, Deere traveled alone to Grand Detour, Illinois, to start from scratch. Ingenious and industrious, his skills as a blacksmith were in demand immediately.

Until 1841 Deere produced 100 plows a year. In 1843, he teamed up with Leonard Andrus to produce more plows and meet growing demand.

Who Makes John Deeres Lawn Mower Engines

The John Deere company began producing engines back in the 19th century, meaning they have been in this industry for a very long time. Although, they were not entirely self-sufficient all the time, particularly at the beginning.

That is why John Deere used to outsource its engines, as well as other parts, to other manufacturers, meaning the company paid those companies to build these parts for them, and then, would stamp their logo and sell it under their brand.

In fact, for decades, the Japanese company Yanmar not only produced engines but entire tractors for John Deere. Other companies such as Briggs & Stratton or Kawasaki also helped make the engines used in John Deeres tractors and lawn mowers.

Recently, the company has started moving away from that approach. They no longer solely rely on others to make their engines. Most of the heavy machinery and commercial-grade products you see under the John Deere brand are almost entirely made by the company. That includes the engines, which their own factories produce and assemble.

However, they still recruit other companies to build some of their engines. That is why you will see their engines have different names or logos on them from time to time. But, that should not concern you as this is how they have been conducting business for a long time. Thus, the engines are still pretty reliable.

The current range of John Deere tractors is vast. At the top end, John Deere produces huge articulated 4WD tractors with up to 560hp. These gigantic beasts are used on big farms. At the other end of the scale, John Deere makes smaller tractors known as sub-compact tractors for homeowners. These include machines such as ride-on mowers.

In between these two ends of the scale, there is an enormous array of other models. Row-crop tractors designed specifically for planting crops efficiently. Specialised low-built and narrow tractors for accessing orchards, vineyards and other awkward terrain. Tractors with tracks. There are also various sizes of what John Deere calls utility tractors with loads of different uses. You can add multiple attachments to them such as ploughs, shovels, balers and mowers.

John Deere is known for tractors, but they make a wide range of other machinery too, from cotton picking machines to combine harvesters.

What Brand Engines Does John Deere Use

The engines John Deere makes for themselves are part of the John Deere brand. You will see that if you pop the hood and take a closer look at one of their tractors or mowers.

Of course, a lot of their products, particularly lower-end ones, are made by Kawasaki or Yanmar, to name a few. Therefore, the brand logo of these companies will be imprinted on those.

What Should I Look For When Buying A Riding Lawn Mower

Before making any purchasing decisions, operations should first ask themselves the following questions:

How large is the area that I am mowing?

In order to make sure they can get the most out of their equipment, homeowners must take the size of their property into account this will have an impact on the features they want and the level of horsepower theyll need.

What size mower deck do I want?

Lawn mowers with larger cutting widths and more horsepower will typically help get the job done faster. On the other hand, smaller mowers allow operators to work in more constrained areas with limited access, such as backyards that are obstructed by narrow gates that larger mowers cannot fit through.

How many obstacles will I need to mow around?

The more obstacles within a space, the tighter turning radius an operator will need. John Deere mowers with All Wheel Steer tend to have a smaller turning radius that helps homeowners cut their grass faster with fewer twists and turns.

What type of terrain will I be facing on a regular basis?

Having an understanding of ones terrain will be critical in deciding how much horsepower they need. While homeowners that work on flat, less challenging terrain can choose a tractor with the least amount of horsepower, those that work with slopes and hills will require a tractor with more horsepower and added stability.

Will I need my lawn tractor for anything other than mowing?

Diesels And Post World War Ii Production

During the 1950s, the R saw a series of upgrades in the models 80, 820, and 830. The 80 was produced for two years, and 3,500 were produced. It had new features, including power steering and dual hydraulics. It developed 68 horsepower and weighed 8,100 pounds . The 80 also corrected the other design flaws within the R, such as using a water pump and radiator pressure cap, and the addition of a center crankshaft main bearing.

The 820 and 830 were similar overall, but also differed in their sheet metal exteriors, fuel tank designs, and color schemes. The 820, a larger version of the 720 and the 720, was basically the same as the 70, except for the model number, and that the sides of the hood are painted John Deere yellow. The 720 was upgraded to the 730 for 1959. The 730 featured more contoured bodywork than the 720, and came with more ergonomic features for the operator. Although the 730 had a short production run, it became one of Deere & Company’s most popular models. The 730 also featured power steering and 24-volt electric starter motor, instead of the V4 pony starter engine. The 730 was available in diesel, gasoline, and LPG, as well as in row crop tricycle, row crop wide front, standard tread, and hi crop wide front formats. The 730 is very popular with tractor pulling enthusiasts, because of its weight, power, and slow speed. The 730 was a 59 horsepower tractor at the belt and 54 horsepower at the drawbar.
