The report uncovers pricing trends and potential industry impact of the plant shortages.

Landscape material marketplace GoMaterials has released a report detailing the severity of the 2021 plant shortages, aimed at helping the industry map the impact across the U.S. South. Based on proprietary sourcing data from thousands of landscaping jobs, the report includes information on specific sizes, plant species and pricing trends impacted by the shortages. As per the data in the report, plants and trees currently in short supply are selling for on average 20% higher prices compared to last year.

Plant shortages in recent years have been exacerbated due to the simultaneous effects of COVID-19, extreme weather events and changing consumer preferences. GoMaterials 2021 report explores the role played by the twin effects of the pandemic restrictions as well as the Texas snowstorm.

Most of the wholesale suppliers and landscapers that we work with have been impacted by the shortages, and lack of information on the exact details about sizes, species in short supply and pricing is adding to the confusion. This report is our way of helping our friends and coworkers from the industry says Marc Elliott, CEO of GoMaterials.Over 60% of industry partners we spoke to expect the shortages to persist for at least two years. GoMaterials is constantly evaluating the situation by working closely with our nursery partners to build awareness and more efficient supply channels.

Pond Tour Will Benefit Nonprofit Special Olympics

The cheerful gurgle and splash of water is nothing out of the ordinary for those who live by a stream.

For those who dont, but wish they did, alternatives do exist.

Chad Shaylor, of Shaylors Ponds and Patios, will share his love of water features with the public this Saturday during a tour of projects hes completed in the area.

The self-guided tours primary purpose is to raise funds for the Special Olympics. One hundred percent of the proceeds will be donated to the non-profit organization that provides athletic training and competitions for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

Kids and sports have been in our lives forever, said Shaylor, who, with his wife, Shannon, also owns Spring-Green Lawn Care, of Cogan Station.

Tickets cost $10 and may be purchased in advance by calling 570-419-1518 or at the Shaylors shop, 959 Dunkleberger Road, on the day of the tour. In addition, food such as hot dogs, hamburgers and drinks will be sold at the shop and games for children will be available.

This is the third year for the pond tour, which typically attracts about 50 people throughout the day. The Shaylors continue to add features, food to the menu and properties to view each year and hope to grow the event.

Over time, Id like to see 300 to 400 people here, Shaylor said.

Thirty percent of my business is water features, Shaylor said. My goal is to build water features every day with my crew.

We have some awesome customers, she said.

Want a thick lawn? Try Aeration and Overseeding | TruGreen Lawn Care

Business View Magazine interviews James Young, President of Spring-Green Lawn Care, as part of our focus on best business practices in the franchise sector.

Founded in 1977, Spring-Green Lawn Care, based in Plainfield, Illinois, delivers both traditional and organic lawn and tree care services to residential and commercial properties through a network of locally owned and operated franchises. Its services include fertilization, weed and disease control for both turf and trees, as well as aeration, overseeding, mosquito control, and other regionally appropriate services.

When the company was founded 40 years ago, it had its roots in franchising from day one, says President of Spring-Green Lawn Care Corp., James Young. It also maintained a portfolio of company-owned franchises. One of the things that the founders felt was important was that they had their own sandbox to understand what it meant to scale an operation and to test new services, products and processes. This local environment gave them some practical knowledge of the business itself so that they were not just relying on franchise owners to see how it worked, and it remains true today.

Over the years, Spring-Green has grown both organically through territory expansion and by the addition of new franchise owners. Today, there are Spring-Green franchises in 26 states, divided into 143 territories.
