If youd rather steer clear of weed and feed but still want to get rid of the weeds taking over your lawn, these are some natural alternatives:

  • Vinegar: Household vinegar has loads of good uses in the garden and killing weeds is one of them. Whether you use it alone or mixed with dish soap to help it stick to the noxious plants, youll get results with just one or two applications of vinegar.
  • Boiling water: Pouring boiling water directly onto the weeds growing on your lawn is a fast way to kill them. As long as youre not watering the surrounding grass, youll find boiling water to be an effective and natural weed killer.
  • Salt: Spraying a salt and water mixture onto the leaves of any weeds on your lawn will absorb any moisture within them and slowly kill them. You should be cautious not to spray salt onto anything made of concrete though, as it can be corrosive.
  • Slow-release fertilizers: A slow-release fertilizer is best for your lawn when you want to gradually feed it nutrients. Having a healthier lawn can also reduce the space that weeds have to grow, so if you choose a good one, it can do both jobs at once.

Its best to wait at least a week before you start adding something to the grass. During this period, your grass will have a chance to absorb the weed control product. It is possible to reseed your lawn after a week. Fertilizer can also be applied directly to the surface of the grass.

If you have a lawn mower, this is a great way to apply fertilizer directly onto the lawn. You can use a spray bottle or a garden sprayer to spray the fertilizer into the ground.

Tips To Apply Weed & Feed Properly

If you want to learn when to use weed and feed, keep in mind several important tips:

  • Measure your lawn: Its good to know which part of the yard you want to fertilize with weed n feed product. This fact is also useful when you calculate the quantity of fertilizer that is allowed to spread.
  • Wait 2-4 days after the mowing: The soil needs time to incorporate the grass cutting. Even if you collect it mechanically, you will always leave something behind. After a little break, the soil will be capable to absorb it again.
  • Follow the precise proportions: As we mentioned before be careful about how much weed and feed you use. Also, make sure not to apply too much of it can use. If youre having some trouble, we would recommend an electric spreader for applying the fertilizer as an alternative its more precise and will ensure that you dont use too much of a product.

Skip The Chemical Weed Killer

The most environmentally friendly way to avoid weed killer is to pull the weeds out of your yard by hand. Weeding is never a fun task, but you dont have to worry about chemicals being tracked into your home or being washed off and polluting local waterways if you hand-weed.

Various weeding tools are available to make the chore a little easier. These include long-handled, foot-operated tools that grip the weeds and allow you to dig up the roots without having to bend down.

The best defense against weeds is a thick, healthy lawn. Keep your property adequately watered, apply fertilizer when necessary, and take steps such as aerating when necessary may be all your lawn needs to stand tall against a weed invasion.

When To Weed And Feed The Lawn

July 3, 2021 By Larry

Weed and Feed is an amazing product that is easy to apply and requires minimal effort. There are, however, a few things to consider for the best results. We look at when to apply to get a lush green lawn.

The first step is to mow correctly a day or two prior to application. If the lawn is dry, it is advisable to give it a good soaking before spreading the product. This will prevent drift and ensure that the granules stick. This will allow it to effectively feed the lawn while also encouraging the seeds to sprout. Use a quality sprinkler to do this.

Once the product has been applied, one needs to water after a day or two and continue for up to two weeks, assuming there is no rain. It is important that you use a decent sprinkler system for this job. A casual splash with the hose is not sufficient. Good watering with a sprinkler allows Weed and Feed to adhere to the grass blades for maximum benefit and effectiveness.

You might want to apply additional Weed and Feed after three months to ensure that the Nitrogen levels are optimal and that all bare spots are covered. Once again, follow the mowing and watering advice above.

Spring is the ideal time to use this product however it can be used as necessary. It will invigorate growth due to the nutrients it adds to the soil. The seed will help to cover and fill in any gaps where the soil is bare.

The #1 Mistake: Skipping Step 1 And Not Using A Crabgrass Preventer

The best looking lawns dont have crabgrass for a reason they use a crabgrass preventer every year! You can skip it if you want, but I dont recommend it. Most people dont realize this, but Scotts Halts and Sta Green Crabgrass both have fertilizer as well in the bag. So take care of the crabgrass and get in that first application of fertilizer.

Your soil supplies some of the nutrients that grass needs but most soils are not able to provide all of them during the entire growing season. Fertilizer helps your lawn stay healthy by promoting new blade and root growth and will aid in recovery from summer foot traffic and pest damage.

Weed & feed is the generic name for a broad range of lawn chemical products designed to strengthen existing grass and kill off certain weeds. It generally improves your lawns ability to absorb water and food, and adds necessary nutrients which promote healthy growth. A healthy lawn discourages weed growth and enables a strong root system for your lawn.

The weed portion of weed and feed is one of a variety of broad leaf-targeted herbicides, usually Dicamba or 2,4-D, that attacks dandelions, dollarweed, and most other green leafy weeds. The chemical is applied to and absorbed by the leaves of the weed.

The granules will not sit on grass blades, which is why weed and feed generally wont kill grass unless it is incorrectly applied. There are also liquid forms of weed and feed that are generally applied with a sprayer.

Lawn Care 101: How to Weed, Seed, Feed, Mow, & Water

If you are having a constant problem with weeds, you might want to look at its source. Weed control products are great for occasional use, but you should not rely on them to maintain your lawn. You want to have a thick and healthy lawn to create a barrier to stop weed seeds from germination. The grass blades should be at least two inches tall to help reduce the amount of sunlight that can accelerate weed growth. Soil pH is another essential factor for a healthy yard. You should think about keeping a pH meter to test your soil. For the best growing environment, you want the soil to stay at a pH level of 7.0.

Early Spring Lawn Care

Lawn care experts recommend staying off the lawn for 24 hours after applying weed and feed. Its important that children stay off the grass during this time because they may mistake moist spots as puddles or small ponds. If pets spend a lot of time outdoors its advised to keep them indoors so their paws dont get stuck in the soggy ground of the wet lawn either. Weed And Feed Basics And The 4 Step Process

Ok, this is my disclaimer: This is my version of the 4 step program that I have used for years. It works! Make sure you always follow instructions on the bag and use the correct settings on your spreader. Its one of the most important DIY home improvement projects you will do.

You will find many different versions of weed and feed programs out there. They all will be some variation of the following:

  • Step 2. Weed and Feed
  • Step 3. Summer Fertilizer with Insect Control
  • Step 4. Fall or Winter Fertilizer

How Do I Know How Often To Fertilize Lawns

If you fertilize too little you wont feed your lawn with the nutrients it needs, and it may turn brittle and yellow. Apply too much fertilizer too early or late, and you can burn the blades.

Most lawns will do fine with fertilizing one or two times a year, in the early spring and the fall, but this depends on the type of lawn you have. Some people do it four times per year. In this case, we recommend keeping in mind the big holidays to do it: around Easter, Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Halloween.

Depending on your lawn, you can fertilize up to once every four or five weeks if using synthetic fertilizers. If you have a slow-release organic fertilizer, you can space out the applications for eight to 10 weeks.

Avoid fertilizing in the peak temperatures of the summer. The heat and blazing sun together with the fertilizers can damage your grass.

Treat Those Weeds First

If you want to improve your lawns appearance, then you will need a weed control product and fertilizer. However, you need to apply these products in a specific order. The first course of action should be to use a safe herbicide to get rid of those weeds. Not only are weeds unsightly, but they can steal nutrients and water from your grass. The roots of the weeds will also compete for space in the first few inches of your soil, and they can effectively choke the grass and plant roots. As you can tell, it is vital to get rid of those weeds in your first step.

For those bare spots in your yard, you will want to till those spaces to help bring any weed seeds to the surface. A preemergent herbicide can be applied to the soil. Before you start adding fertilizer to your grass, you should wait at least a week. This period will give your grass a chance to absorb the weed control product. After a week, you can reseed your lawn with the appropriate grass species. In many cases, those palm-sized bare spots will fill in naturally. If there are still weeds poking through after a herbicide application, you might want to choose a glyphosate product to prevent further weeds in your yard.

You should also not carry out aerating, or spread new grass seed after weed & feed usage, as it can possibly damage any new emerging grass seedlings.
