Should You Buy An Electric Lawn Mower
Electric lawn mowers have improved significantly in recent years. They are quiet, lightweight, and incredibly easy to start.
Once limited to very small yards, battery powered electric mowers are now capable of mowing bigger areas without the bothersome difficulty of dragging around an extension cord or waiting to recharge the mower after very short run times.
While really big lawns, thick grasses, or tough terrain are still a challenge for these mowers, the average homeowner will be very happy with todays electric mowers.
Ryobi 38 Battery Electric Riding Lawn Mower
Best Battery Powered Lawn Mower in Ride-On Category
This is our careful selection for the best electric ride-on lawn mower. It runs on 48v batteries and recharges conveniently by connecting to an average 120v outlet the charger cord extends from the mower rear. The 38-inch deck width reduces mowing time with fewer passes, while 2 blades cut super quickly, efficiently, and with impressive power. You can change the cutting height manually with 12 different adjustments.
This option is a glimpse into the future of mowing. With zero emissions and a quiet run, the included USB charging port is a convenient addition, too.

Dewalt Max Blower Kit
If you think electric outdoor power tools are wimpy, then this three-speed DeWalt blower is here to convince you otherwise. It delivers up to 135 mph of air speed, and, though lightweight, is billed as being worthy of use on job sites. The kit comes complete with a 20-volt, lithium-ion battery and charger.
“This thing is amazing,” begins one five-star review from a verified customer on Amazon. “I laughed when I pulled it out of the box because it is tiny and thought it would only be good for the garage and front porch. But I use it every day to blow pine needles off a long driveway!”
The Environment And Noise
While power and run time certainly favor gas-powered mowers, noise and environmental considerations support electric. Battery-powered mowers have zero carbon emissions, so running one wont contribute to climate change.
Noise is also a factor worth considering. Many municipalities regulate the acceptable amount of yard noise. Big, beefy gas-powered mowers can easily exceed these guidelines, but battery-powered mowers almost certainly wont.
Note: Some users find vibration is more severe and bothersome with gas burning mowers than electric.

It runs on two 18-volt LXT lithium ion 5.0 Ah batteries. Switch between the higher-powered setting to a Quiet Mode when your lawn only needs a touch-up.
You shell out a bit more cash for this Makita but you dont have to worry about sourcing the batteries and charger. Youre all set and ready to go for a clean, nature-friendly mowing experience.
Electric Mowers Are Quieter To Operate Than Gas Mowers
If you live in a neighborhood with noise zoning rules that prohibit operating a gas engine mower during certain hours, an electric mower could be just the thing.
These mowers are significantly quieter. Though they are not purely silent, they come nowhere close to the noise pollution of a gas-powered lawn mower.
One caveat to this: if you are planning to mow in the mornings when there is still dew on the ground, invest in a mower with a more powerful battery. Damp grass clippings can really burden a motor. When that motor is running off of a battery, the strain can quickly deplete it.

Pro: Cleaner For The Environment
Gasoline-powered mowers emit lots of airborne pollutants. According to the California Air Resources Board, one hour of mowing generates the same pollution as driving a car for 300 miles. Indeed, the Environmental Protection Agency states that gas lawn mowers contribute the lion’s share of nonroad-related air pollution generated nationwide.
A clear clean alternative is the electric lawnmower. The Electric Power Research Institute notes if we replaced half the gas-powered lawn mowers with electric ones, it would reduce the same amount of emissions as removing two million vehicles from the road.

Are Cordless Mowers Better For The Environment
You’d be forgiven for presuming that steering clear of petrol mowers automatically means a reduction in your carbon footprint, however this may not always be the case.
While it’s true that cordless lawn mowers don’t emit any harmful fumes and contribute to higher levels of air pollution, they do still use electricity every time you charge the battery. As almost half of the UK’s energy is still produced by burning fossil fuels, this is still bad for the planet.
You also need to take into account how long the battery will last for, and whether or not it’s easy to replace. Some manufacturers guarantee that you won’t need to replace your battery until you’ve charged it a certain number of times, but this will also depend on how often you cut your grass.
However, if the battery is easily replaceable and the manufacturer of your mower will help you to safely dispose of the old one, it is likely still a more environmentally-friendly option than a petrol lawn mower.

Bag Mulch Or Side Discharge
No matter if you tend to mulch or bag, we recommend getting a mower that has all three modes . There are times when you can use each throughout the year to your advantage.
The Ryobi AWD mower has an interesting integrated lever/gate system for switching between bagging and mulching modes. We love not having to remember where we placed the mulching plug! Nearly all push mowers include a bagging optionso figuring out rear or side discharge remains about the only decision here.

What To Expect From A Cordless Mower
Cordless lawn mowers used to be designed with smaller, suburban gardens in mind, but recent developments mean they can now cover large areas of grass without needing to be charged during the mowing process.
Instead of messing around with temperamental pull cords, you simply pop the charged battery in the slot, press the ‘on’ button and you’re ready to go. You can often use the battery for your other garden machinery too, but just double-check that they’re compatible before you buy.
There’s no universal running time for cordless mowers, so this can vary from a measly ten minutes up to well over half an hour on a single charge. The ones with longer running times usually take a little longer to charge though, so it’s all about what’s best for you and your garden.

How To Change A Lawn Mower Battery
Lawn mower batteries are found in one of two places: under the mowers hood or seat. To find it, turn off your lawn mower and remove the keys. Once youve located the right spot, release the latch so you can access the battery. If you find any tie-down strap or bar to hold the battery in place, then remove it.
When you dislodge the battery, ensure that you remove the black or ground wire. If you find the connectors are corroded, use a stiff wire brush to clean them. If the battery itself is badly corroded, apply baking soda and water paste to the terminals. Let this sit for a few minutes before using a brush and water to rinse off the corrosion. Dry any leftover water with a soft cloth.
Be careful to make sure you dont get the mixture or water into the battery cells baking soda neutralizes battery acid and will neutralize the battery if it finds a way inside.
If the connectors remain secure, use a flat head screwdriver to slowly pry the connector apart and away from the terminal. Ensure you dont force the cable off, as you might accidentally pop off the connected terminal.
When the negative cable is removed, remove the red cable.
Finally, when youve removed the battery from the holder, clean out any corrosion or debris. Put the new battery into the holder and re-attach the tie-down strap or bar.
Corded Vs Cordless Electric Lawn Mowers
Corded Electric mowers need to be connected to a power source to run. They are generally more powerful and will run as long as you need them. It may, however, limit your movements and the cords may get tangled while mowing. The plus side is these mowers may cost less than the cordless ones.
Cordless lawn mowers are battery-operated this means they have a limited time to run. The run time will generally last long enough to complete the task at hand. However, they are a bit heavier than electric corded mowers and are more expensive.

Battery Powered Lawn Mower Manufacturers
Battery powered lawn mowers come in many different sizes and price ranges. They can range in mower deck diameter sizes from 13 inches to 25 inches. There are even some larger mowers by RYOBI that are in the 38 in. to 54 in. range. Cost also varies from $200 $600 for push mowers and up to $5000 for the larger electric riding mowers.
Battery lawn mowers have the same features as a modern gas-powered mower. You can get a self-propelled mower just like you can with a gas-powered mower. Some of the self-propelled battery mowers even have a cruise control feature which speeds up and slows down based on your walking speed.
Cordless lawn mowers have multiple deck height ranges and multiple types of discharger capability. Deck height is usually controlled by a single lever that raises and lowers the mower deck. They can mulch, bag, or side discharge.
Weight is usually not an issue on a battery powered mower, due to most having plastic mower decks to keep the weight down, which in turn extends battery life. Most also have folding handles for easy storage.
Brushless motors have greatly increased the power of battery powered mowers in recent years, and the power actually rivals their gas power counterparts. A brushless motor creates more power and blade speed at the expense of some battery life.
How To Choose An Electric Lawn Mower
Electric lawn mowers are eco-friendly, convenient , relatively quiet compared to traditional models and simple to store vertically, saving you precious storage space. Simply charge the battery or batteries , which, in our testing, ranged from two 18-volt batteries to one 80-volt battery, taking about 30 minutes to two hours, and youre in business.
The models we tested either arrived ready to go out of the box or needed just a bit of assembly to put together, no tools required. All included grass bag catchers, and most of those needed to be assembled, but again with no tools necessary. This makes convenience one of the electric mowers best features. They cut grass as well as their gas counterparts, but feature high-efficiency, long-lasting brushless motors which are quieter and, because theres no gas or oil to worry about, can be stored upright.
All the models we tested featured standard 21-inch decks , mulch, bag and side discharge and adjustable cutting heights and required at least one brand-specific rechargeable lithium-ion battery. These can be quite pricey: A 56-volt Ego battery is $229 at Lowes, but many mowers include them in their price and, if you are loyal to a certain brand, the batteries are often interchangeable with the lines other cordless tools.
