The Best Ways To Get Your Lawn Ready For Spring

A beautiful lawn helps your home look its best, is a great place to play around with your kids, and is wonderful to walk on barefoot. Here are some benefits associated with spring lawn care and a number of ways to make sure your lawn looks and feels incredible this year.

Overseeding And Core Aeration

How to Winterize the Lawn

One of the most common lawn issues is the thinning of the grass blades. This can cause your yard to look patchy and unattractive. Havingoverseeding and core aeration done on your yard is the best way to counteract and even protect it from these problems. This process replaces dead blades of grass with new ones, while also strengthening the ability of your lawn to repair itself.

Get Your Soil In Top Shape

Liming. Before growing a healthy lawn, it is a must to be sure it is ready to grow healthy. After what winter has put your soil through, it pays to check your soil PH to know if your soil needs amendments. Get that soil test kit ready early in spring and see whether your soil is acidic or alkaline. Take note that the presence of moss may often mean theres acidity. Take caution in applying lime, though. Do not apply lime within 2-3 weeks after fertilizing. This may cause a reaction on the ingredients and they will lose their effect altogether.

Lawn Aeration. Compaction is the enemy of growth. Make way for water and essential nutrients by loosening your soil through aeration. You may have to wait until late spring to apply this process, though, as it is best during high growth periods for your grass to continue to thrive.

Say no to bare spots! What could ruin your grassy lawn worse than a bald spot? Well, there is no cause to panic. Simply flush the spot with water and remove the dead grass. Level the spot out with soil and reseed with your grass variety. Voila! Off with the bare spot!

Fertilizing. Go light on feeding your greens in the early spring. Give them time to digest the fertilizers. Very often, overwhelming your grass with fertilizers does far worse. Not to mention the amount of weeds you will invite by overfeeding your grass!

Control your weeds before they take control

Water Your Lawn In The Morning

The best time to water your lawn is between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. because your lawn will have the entire day to dry. You can also water your lawn between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. if you dont have time in the morning. Avoid watering your lawn between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. because its the hottest part of the day and most of the water will simply evaporate. Top 5 Tips To Prepare Your Lawn For Spring

Think of your garden as a blank canvas. Its a space where you get to paint whatever picture you want. Not sure where to start? Heres a tip the lawn!

Preparation, preparation, preparation

Yes, its still Winter. Its still cold and frosty. But, dont let that get you out of the garden. Winter is the perfect time to prepare your garden for Spring the season your garden will bloom.

Follow these 5 steps, and you can help prevent your lawn from being overtaken by weeds or die from drought.

1. Rake it!

Raking isnt just for removing leaves and debris, its the best way to free matted patches of grass. Before you begin raking, look around and find matted patches where grass blades are stuck together. This is often caused by a disease called snow mould. The reason we need to get rid of matted patches is because new grass struggles to grow in areas it cant access air.

2. Fertilising

Fertilising your lawn and reinvigorating its nutrients gets your lawn out of its Winter hibernation. Fertilising and Top Dressing will give your lawn strength to withstand the stress brought on by the Summer months. We recommend Top Soil Improver to get the job done.

3. Dont underseed, overseed

The Winter months can make your lawn sparse and bare. If your lawn is looking a little sad, now is the time to apply grass seed to fill those damaged turf areas.

4. Pre-emergent Weed Control

5. Hydrate

Thanks for all of the great tips. I am just wondering, for this spring in Chicago, when will be the best time to apply Corn Gluten Meal? Once the temperature warms up, it seems to dip back down again. In addition, I feel like it hasnt been warm and dry for long enough stretches to apply CGM, but I am already starting to see dandelion blooms. Also, is it necessary to mow before applying? If so, why? Thanks!

Help The Grass Get Some Fresh Air

Its important to Aerate and Seed the lawn in peak growing season so that the grass can bounce back quickly. An aerator tool bores small, shallow holes into the ground. The purpose is to break up compact soil, provide adequate space for grass to grow, and allow the roots access to fresh air and nutrients more efficiently.

    Apply Fertilizer And Weed Killer

Before applying fertilizer, make sure your grass is actively growing, which should occur early in the spring. The fertilizer will feed your grass and help it grow faster. When the lawn is thick and healthy, it will crowd out most weeds, but just to be safe, its recommended that you apply a fertilizer with crabgrass preventer. A few weeks after fertilizing, adding weed killer will provide additional protection.

Today we are sharing a simple checklist of pre-spring lawn tips that are sure to pay off in the coming weeks and months.

Winter weather brings fallen leaves, branches and other yard debris that has likely collected on your lawn over the course of the cooler months. A little picking up and raking will get your yard back to square for the spring season.

    2. Apply a Pre-Emergent Herbicide

To avoid pesky weeds from cropping up and ruining your lawn before spring rolls in, apply a pre-emergent herbicide. The purpose of a pre-emergent is to stop weed germination early so that your turf can thrive. A pre-emergent, as its name suggests, prevents weeds from emerging in the first placethis is useful if you are expecting the same kind of weed to appear annually or to control weeds before they appear so that you can reduce labor spent outside hand-pulling them. Recommended pre-emergents for a variety of warm season turfgrasses include Prodiamine 65 WDG, Dimension 2EW and Surflan AS. Read more about applying a pre-emergent in the spring here.

How Do You Prepare Your Lawn Ready For Spring

Getting the Lawn Ready for Spring

Winter isnt kind to lawns. Ive written before about not treading on frozen grass as it will damage the cellular structure but this isnt the only issue. Fallen leaves block air and light getting through to the new grass, and moss and thatch build up are perennial problems. Theres a reason why there are so many lawn care and maintenance companies around. And theres a reason why so many lawns end up being decked or gravelled over. Contrary to popular belief, maintaining a lush lawn is one of the hardest things to do in the garden. Which is probably another reason why new build houses tend to have such tiny ones, but thats a whole other blog story. Anyway, here are some lawn care tips to help you prepare your lawn ready for Spring.

    Spring Lawn Care Steps

    Rake

Spring raking removes lingering fall leaves and grass blades that did not survive winter. Left alone, these dead blades add to your lawn’s thatch layer. Raking also loosens matted grass clumps caused by snow mold, which can smother new growth.

Use a spring-tine rake with a strong upward pull to remove dead grass. Rake when soil is not soft and muddy, or you risk pulling up healthy grass crowns.

    Overseed

Fill bare or thin spots in the lawn by overseeding. Late spring is the best time to overseed warm-season grass. Fall is the ideal time for cool-season grass, but in colder regions, spot-seeding small areas in spring yields good results. When you overseed, apply a slow-release nitrogen fertilizer. Five weeks after overseeding, apply a quick-release nitrogen feed.

Learn about causes of bare spots in lawns, how to prevent them and how to treat them.

    Aerate

Vital for a truly healthy lawn, aeration is the solution for compacted soil. How often you should aerate your lawn depends on soil type and how you use your lawn. Late spring to early summer is the right time to aerate warm-season grasses. Fall is the best time for cool-season types. But if you didn’t get to it last fall, you can tackle it in early spring. Learn the secrets behind aerating and how to aerate properly.

    Dethatch

Spring is the right time to dethatch turf. Aim for early spring for cool-season grasses and late spring to early summer for warm-season grasses. Learn more about dethatching.

    Mowing And Lawn Care Tips

Before mowing in spring, inspect your lawn mower and perform any necessary maintenance, such as changing the oil or spark plugs. Make sure your lawn mower blade is sharp to guarantee a clean cut. Be safe, and always remove the spark plugs before doing any work on your lawn mower.

    • Start mowing when the ground is dry enough and grass is long enough to require cutting. Avoid mowing too low: Grass cut too short allows sunlight to reach the soil and encourages weed seeds to germinate.
    • Consider setting the mowing height high enough to remove only the top one-third of the grass blades. Longer grass blades encourage deeper, healthier roots, but may require mowing more frequently.
    • Check your mowers manual to see if it has a recommended setting for your specific type of grass.
    • Consider lawn mowing early in the evening, when the temperatures are usually cooler and any fog or dew has dried. Dont mow when its raining or just after a rain, as the mower will not cut your lawn evenly and may become clogged with clumps of wet grass.
    • Vary the pattern each time you mow. This helps prevent ruts from forming and keeps the grass from always bending in the same direction.
    • Mowing should be done when your grass needs it, not on a set schedule. Grass usually needs to be mowed more often in the spring and early summer than at the end of the growing season.

Tip: Make sure your lawnmower’s tank is empty of gas at the end of mowing season so you can start the next cutting season with a fresh tank.

    Keep Pest Prevention In Mind

While conducting your spring and summer landscaping prep, pay attention to any garden pests, such as aphids, grasshoppers, mosquitoes, wasps, termites, springtails, slugs and snails. These creatures may seem innocent enough, but they can destroy your garden and landscaping.

    • Choose native, naturally resistant plants around the home.
    • Research local pest problems so you can tell the difference between a harmful bug from a welcome one.
    • If you have to worry about grazing animals such as rabbits and deer, consider plants that naturally repel these animals.

Protect The Lawn During The Last Weeks Of Winter

Dont give into late-winter fatigue. Its important to protect your grass from regular traffic and snow piles through the last stretch of the season. Keep your driveway, sidewalks and paths clear of snow so that people have a safe place to walk. You should avoid shoveling snow onto the lawn or making snow piles that get in the way, forcing people to trample down the grass. At the end of winter, break up piles of ice and spread the snow around to help it melt away quicker.

As winter shifts to spring, new grass growth can easily be damaged by the pressure from feet or piled snow. Plus, piles of snow take longer to melt and can block the grass from getting those first warm rays of sun in the early spring. This results in the grass taking longer to turn green and start growing.
