The mixing rate is 2.5 fluid ounces per gallon of water, which makes enough spray for a 400-square-foot area. The main ingredients in Weed B Gon are 2,4-D dymethylamine salt, Quinchlorac and Dicamba dymethylamine salt. Weed B Gon works best on speedwell when the plants are young and actively growing.

Two Of The Most Problematic Weeds Your Lawn Can Have

12th May 2012

During this period of the year, Speedwells are one of the more common difficult-to-remove weeds that will likely be appearing in your lawn. Although one of the more pretty weeds compared to others, Speedwells cause anger to anyone trying to achieve a perfect lawn.

If your lawn has Speedwell, it can become deeply infested in a short period of time, affecting the vast area of your lawn. Treating and recovering your lawn at this stage becomes very difficult as there isnt enough grass to help re-establish the turf.

Understanding The Crabgrass Cycle

Crabgrass is a warm-season annual that germinates, lives and dies all in the same year. But crabgrass problems donât end with the growing season. While they live, each crabgrass plant produces up to 150,000 seeds.1 Those seeds stay behind, ready to germinate the following spring and start the cycle all over again. Seeds that donât germinate right away can remain viable and stick around to germinate in future years.

Once crabgrass seeds germinate and plants emerge, mowing your lawn short wonât stop the seeds. With its low-growing, crab-like growth, crabgrass can set seed when cut as low as 1/2 inch tall1 thatâs much lower than recommended healthy mowing heights for any common lawn grass. Effective control requires preventing crabgrass seeds from ever becoming seed-producing plants.

Low-growing crabgrass seeds escape mowers.

WHEN TO APPLY: Spring and fall treatments under adequate soil moisture conditions are preferred to the summer treatments. Broadcast applications or follow-up applications at 2 to 6 week intervals are recommended for more mature weeds, for dense infestations, and for adverse environmental conditions.

How Lawn Master Deal With Speedwell

What is this???

With our many years of experience between our large group of greenkeepers and groundsmen, we have devised a proven method to fully remove Speedwell from turf, provided it is applied in a correct time period.Note: We obviously cant share our method with the public as it could be valuable to our less experienced competitors.

In lawns, spot-treat the weed using a weedkiller such as a 2,4-D-based herbicide in spring or early-summer, when growth is at its most vigorous. Repeat through summer where necessary. Apply in cool, moist, still conditions when there is least risk of the chemical drifting onto and damaging nearby garden plants.

How To Kill Crabgrass And Prevent It From Returning

Once crabgrass gets started in your lawn, those coarse, unattractive weeds seem to live and spread forever. But unlike lawn weeds that do live several years, crabgrass plants only live a single year. What they do in that year, however, has long-lasting consequences for your lawn. Understanding how crabgrass works and how to break its cycle can help you get rid of crabgrass and keep it gone.

Speedwell is known for its bright blossoms that travelers crossing the open countryside would once tuck into their clothes as a charm to speed one well, or protect against mishaps during their journey. Thats how the plant got its cheery name.

With more than 500 species found across the globe, speedwell can be a desired ornamental or a pesky nuisance, depending upon where it pops up. This wildflower can be tricky to get rid of once it begins spreading across your lawn, so here are some tips to control its numbers.

Organic Weed Control: Corn Gluten Meal

Weed B Gon is a selective weed killer for lawns. Selective weed killers act on broadleaf weeds rather than grass, because the two kinds of plants grow differently. Some kinds of speedwell are desirable garden perennials, but others are fast-growing broadleaf weeds that infiltrate lawns and can out-compete lawn grasses, and Weed B Gon works on these types of speedwell.

Natural Methods For Weed Removal In Your Lawn

If you dont like the idea of using chemical herbicide on your lawn then here are some natural methods you can try:

Pulling Weeds By Hand

Sometimes, the traditional way is the best. If you only have 1 or 2 plants to remove, then weeding by hand is usually quick and effective.

Use a trowel to dig down around the plant and remove it from the ground. Make sure you take the roots as well.

If you want to make the job easier, you can use a weed puller. This tool allows you to stand as you pull the weeds out of the ground.

The main drawback of removing them by hand is that it takes a lot of hard work if you have a lawn full of weeds.

And because some plants grow back quickly if you leave any of the root system behind, it can be difficult to completely get rid of them without taking great care.

A common problem weed thats very difficult to control by hand once its well established in your yard is nutsedge.

Vinegar

Another natural method that people often recommend is vinegar. This burns the weed on contact, killing every part it touches. Pour it into a handheld sprayer and then apply it to all visible parts of the plant.

Youll have to use a strong acetic acid solution of somewhere between 10-20% concentration. Normal table vinegar isnt usually powerful enough for the job.

But there are two problems with using vinegar.

How To Stop Speedwell

For starters, speedwell rarely sprouts in a strong lush lawn, and the same goes for most weeds. Weak grass wont stand a chance against this opportunistic weed. Keep your lawn happy and healthy with a regular maintenance plan that includes mowing, watering, and fertilizing in order to ward off all weeds, including the very invasive speedwell.

When you spot one or two speedwell plants in your lawn, carefully remove the flower heads before it blooms. This prevents the plant from setting seed. To stop speedwell before it invades, apply a pre-emergent herbicide before the seeds germinate. Spot treating with a post-emergent product will help with already existing weeds.

Speedwell And Chickweed In New Lawn

We took a county extension office workshop last year on lawn renovation. We followed their instructions and the results of our soil test last fall to kill off old lawn and start a new one . Grass came upânot super thick, but looked pretty good, and we were able to mow once in November, followed by a second fertilization at Thanksgiving. We thought we were done until next fall, with the exception of mowing in the summer.

This spring we have a huge amount of weeds. The extension office has identified them as chickweed and speedwell . There are way too many to pull. I have read somewhere that we have to get rid of them now before they seed. Is it too late? When do they seed? What is the best way of killing them? Then what? Do we also have to lay down a pre-emergent of some kind for perennial weeds, or is this best addressed all in one step? Please help! Thanks!

Mow The Lawn On A Regular Basis

Leaf Spot Fungus Can Kill Your Lawn

Mowing the lawn regularly is the single most important aspect of maintaining a healthy lawn.

Its also the most overlooked.

Healthy grass has to grow, and if it cant grow tall it has to grow in other ways. Cutting the grass prevents it from growing upwards so it is forced to grow sideways, creating new shoots and new grass leaves. This sideways growth is what creates a thick, lush lawn.

If you allow the grass to grow tall and then hack it down after 8 weeks, you take away all its water and food supply. Youll shock it, even kill it, ending up with a lawn with sparse, patchy brown grass. An environment that weeds and moss thrive in.

Cut the grass at least every 10 days between April and September.

Hairy bittercress , yellow rocket and whitlow-grass are all members of the Mustard family, which grow as rosettes close to the soil surface before sending up flowers on vertical stems. The leaves of hairy bittercress are usually 3 inches or less in length and covered with fine hairs. The leaves of yellow rocket can be up to 6 inches long and are smooth. Whitlow-grass has the smallest rosette of Mustard family discussed, no bigger than 2 inches in diameter. Leaves are oblong and covered with fine hairs.

These plants all produce flowers on upright stems. Hairy bittercress and whitlow-grass both produce small white flowers with four petals, deeply lobed in whitlow-grass. Yellow rocket produces yellow flowers, again with four petals characteristic of this family.

Henbit and purple deadnettle both have the characteristic square stem of plants in the Mint family. The leaves of both are deeply veined covered with soft hairs, but the leaves of purple deadnettle are triangular and the upper leaves are often purple in color. Herein, what herbicide kill corn speedwell?

Speedwells can be controlled by specific broadleaf weed herbicides. Annual speedwell species can be controlled with preemergence products. Combination herbicides that include triclopyr and dicamba are especially effective for postemergence control.

    What does Speedwell look like?

There are several types of Speedwell, all with numerous small, lobed leaves and small flowers, which vary in the color and can be white, blue, pink, and purple. The leaves grow in pairs and have scalloped edges, while heart-shaped seed pods grow on the stem below the flowers.

Careful mechanical removal is the best method of eradication but a few herbicides may provide some control.

    Lawn Weeds

Speedwell used to be controlled by a chemical called Ioxynil which is no longer available.

The next best weedkiller to use these days is one that contains Fluroxypyr such as Resolva Lawn Weedkiller Spot Spray.

However, itll probably need more than one application to kill it.

When using a weedkiller concentrate, you need to mix it accurately as per the manufacturers instructions.

Mix it too weak and it wont kill Speedwell. You might be tempted to make it stronger but if you do, you risk killing the grass too.

Remove Excess Thatch By Scarifying Your Lawn

Thatch is a fibrous layer of organic material that lies on top of the soil and in amongst the crowns of the grass plant.

Its made up of old both living and dead grass shoots, old clippings and other stuff.

Some lawn thatch is a good thing at it protects the crown of the grass plant from damage and disease.

Too much, on the other hand, prevents water, air and nutrients from penetrating the soil, starving the grass of what it needs to be able to produce food and grow. This results in a threadbare lawn with weak, unhealthy grass.

Lawn scarification is a process of ripping the excess thatch out of a lawn with a machine called a Scarifier. Itll look rough for a week or two but with the right recovery program your lawn will recover, be full of grass and take away the room for Creeping Speedwell or Germander Speedwell to grow in.

And itll look better than ever.
